Bookstore Tourism: The Book Addict's Guide to Planning & Promoting Bookstore Road Trips for Bibliophiles & Other Bookshop Junkies
Bookstore Tourism: The Book Addict's Guide to Planning & Promoting Bookstore Road Trips for Bibliophiles & Other Bookshop Junkies | Larry Portzline
22 posts | 1 to read
Bookstore Tourism is a new, innovative grassroots campaign to promote and support independent bookstores by marketing them as a travel and tourist destination. The primary goal of this groundbreaking effort is to encourage book-lovers across the United States to organize day-trips and other kinds of literary outings to cities and towns with interesting, fun and unique bookstores that people in their own communities may not be able to visit regularly. "Bookstore Tourism: The Book Addict's Guide to Planning & Promoting Bookstore Road Trips for Bibliophiles & Other Bookshop Junkies" was written by the creator of the Bookstore Tourism concept, Larry Portzline, a professional writer and part-time college instructor. The book is more than just an enjoyable, easy to read how-to; it's also a call for book-lovers across the country to unite in support of indie bookstores, many of which are disappearing due to heavy competition from the mega-chains, online giants and other retailers who dominate the bookselling industry. Bookstore Tourism is for anyone who has a personal or professional interest in books, education, travel or the arts: book-lovers, reading groups, teachers, writers, artists, historians, schools, colleges, continuing ed programs, libraries, non-profits, churches, bus and motor coach companies, travel agents, tourism bureaus, chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, downtown revitalization projects, "One Book" programs, book festivals, publishers, and of course booksellers. It has tremendous potential as an outreach, economic development, community relations or fundraising activity. Portzline's book provides a guide for those interested in taking ownership of theBookstore Tourism idea in their communities -- as well as those who just want to go along for the ride! -- to create a new travel niche for book-lovers; to keep independent bookstores open through grassroots support; and to promote reading and literacy.

Since we‘re practicing social distance and staying home, why not attend a book tour online?

Details, including the Week 1 schedule, here:

Found this book shop by pure luck on my last day in Prague. Nice consolation prize for not making it to either the Clementium or the Austrian National Library 📚📚📚📚📚📚📚

Just found this list & now I am dying to add to my #bookstoretourism I‘ve only been to 4 on this list as far as I can tell. How about you? (Link in comments). Mine:
Full Circle Bookstore-Oklahoma (of course)
Powell‘s Books-Oregon
Lemuria-Mississippi
Sundog Books-Florida

Is this list accurate? I feel it is for my state! What are some of your faves? I wish I could visit them all and get more #bookishmerchyoulove #julyinbooks18 #bookstore #travel

TiredLibrarian Vermont's Northshire Bookstore is delightful! Been there, and also to their Saratoga Springs, NY store. 6y

Hit one last used bookstore before heading home today. I loved this #bookstorecat! So friendly and relaxed (but not a cooperative subject for my photos, unfortunately) I found a few books, pictured here... and I just realized there's one that I don't remember picking out! Hmmm. Now I'm wondering if I left a book behind or if this book was added to my stack by accident! 🤷‍♀️ #CatsofLitsy

Tianarose Wee book inn! 6y
TK-421 @Tianarose Yes! 🙌 6y

More #BookstoreBliss today! Picked up some classic fantasy and sci-fi, tried (unsuccessfully) to catch the attention of the bookstore kitty and just generally enjoyed browsing the shelves, even though I didn't find the specific books I was searching for.

tomes4gnomes That sounds lovely. I did some bookstore browsing today too just for the sheer pleasure of it, even though I didn‘t plan to buy anything. It‘s my favorite place to be! 6y

While trying to find the restaurant one of my daughter‘s friends told her about, we stumbled upon this. Don‘t know whether I‘d be able to find it again. It‘s in Florence and near the Duomo.

RinaBrahmbhattBarot Do they actually let you swap books with your own copy? 6y
youngreadrshelf @MyBookSwapClub not sure. I was trying to find a restaurant with 2 college students and food was more important to them at that point. 😉 6y

Time to plan a trip to Tokyo! Book and Bed is a bookstore/hostel where you get to sleep “in” the shelves! Perfection!

Have any Littens who live in Japan or who have visited Japan seen this?
