The Long and Faraway Gone
The Long and Faraway Gone: A Novel | Lou Berney
26 posts | 29 read | 43 to read
With the compelling narrative tension and psychological complexity of the works of Laura Lippman, Dennis Lehane, Kate Atkinson, and Michael Connelly, Edgar Award-nominee Lou Berneys The Long and Faraway Gone is a smart, fiercely compassionate crime story that explores the mysteries of memory and the impact of violence on survivorsand the lengths they will go to find the painful truth of the events that scarred their lives. In the summer of 1986, two tragedies rocked Oklahoma City. Six movie-theater employees were killed in an armed robbery, while one inexplicably survived. Then, a teenage girl vanished from the annual State Fair. Neither crime was ever solved. Twenty-five years later, the reverberations of those unsolved cases quietly echo through survivors lives. A private investigator in Vegas, Wyatts latest inquiry takes him back to a past hes tried to escapeand drags him deeper into the harrowing mystery of the movie house robbery that left six of his friends dead. Like Wyatt, Julianna struggles with the pastwith the day her beautiful older sister Genevieve disappeared. When Julianna discovers that one of the original suspects has resurfaced, shell stop at nothing to find answers. As Wyatt's case becomes more complicated and dangerous, and Julianna seeks answers from a ghost, their obsessive quests not only stir memories of youth and first love, but also begin to illuminate dark secrets of the past. But will their shared passion and obsession heal them, or push them closer to the edge? Even if they find the truth, will it help them understand what happened, that long and faraway gone summer? Will it set them freeor ultimately destroy them?

The landscape of memory was like that. Sometimes the near seemed far, far away and the faraway was right beneath your feet 🍿🎟🧠

#WinterWonderland For some reason my brain went to this title for today‘s prompt #GoneAway. I honestly only remember the premise not the resolution 🙄😬which is probably why I gave the book a so-so rating. I recall being underwhelmed but I‘ve seen plenty of glowing reviews. 25 years ago, as a teenager Wyatt survived a movie theatre shooting, now a girl from his past, who also experienced trauma that summer has contacted him with new information.

TrishB Blurb sounds good - but will trust your judgement! 11mo
Cinfhen My copy is #GoneAway I‘m pretty sure it‘s that same “friend” who I refuse to loan books too now. You might like if it‘s ever a 99 pence deal @TrishB 11mo

A crime story set in Oklahoma City in the summer of 1986, when two tragedies shake up the community. Six movie-theater employees were killed in an armed robbery, while one inexplicably survived. Then, a teenage girl vanishes from the annual State Fair. Neither crime was ever solved. Twenty-five years later, the impact of those unsolved cases echo through survivors‘ lives. I was engrossed all the way through.

Life kept getting in the way of me finishing this one, but it really was excellent. Loved the connection of past and present, and I actually did not see the ending coming at all. Looking forward to his next book, which is out this fall! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a melancholy story that is hard to shake. It‘s one of my favorite reads so far this year.

I took my first sick day today in my seven years of teaching due to the most gnarly sore throat I've ever had in my life. Working my way through this one with my good boy serving as sweet company. #teachersoflitsy

Reviewsbylola Ugh feel better! That‘s an amazing track record. 🤒 2y
Skyler @Reviewsbylola Thanks! Yeah, there have been a couple of instances where I probably should have called in, but my own stubbornness got the best of me. Not today though! 2y

An entertaining, fast-paced book about two cold cases. Some plot holes and everything kind of conveniently resolved a little bit too quickly; however, like I said, entertaining--good "mind candy."

Although the two main storylines connected only superficially, I enjoyed the read.

I really enjoyed the tapestry this author wove, using a current case of harassment and two cold murder cases to tell a complex story of two people trying to get answers and solve the mysteries surrounding the crimes that touched their lives. Top notch storytelling and unforgettable characters make this one a keeper.

I tried to start this book a couple of times on Kindle, then bought the audiobook and couldn't stop listening!!! Two cold cases, a current mystery all in Oklahoma City. Cool how the colors on the cover match the Internet OKC cityscape.

Cinfhen I thought this was just ok. Love your photo 2y
Skeebies05 I looooved this one! But I'm a sucker for cold cases. 2y

I looooved it but I'm a sucker for a cold case mystery. This book had two old cases and one new. There was something about it that reminded me of Case Histories. The one sort of strange thing was how many times the characters went to Whole Foods!

I recommended this to at least a dozen people last year because it was just. that. good. The best first chapter I've read in I don't know how long -- it's a first chapter that demands to be read again as soon as you finish the book.

janalithgow I read it on your recommendation and have been telling everyone to read it since. Love. 4y
