TheBookHippie @dabbe thank you! My library is my adult (35) daughters former bedroom. I converted it in 2017, (it was a nursery for teen moms until we got an actual house center for them) it‘s gotten good use after my daughter left for college. Having a space for books is ZEN- I just love it. No worries my daughter has her own house 🤣♥️👏🏼. 8mo

I‘m so far behind on my #ChildrensClassicRead2023 #April
But this book is so delightful, I have to finish it.
Sweet Lucinda‘s uncle gave her money they bet on when she was 10 yo - knowing all along he was going to lose.
She bet she would not get the ‘Snobbiness Disease‘!

Finished this last month for #childrensclassicread2023 challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed young Lucinda‘s vacation from her well to do family while her parents traveled abroad. She was allowed the opportunity to experience life outside of her limited circle while exploring the streets of NYC on her roller skates. New adventures every day! I discovered that skating was all the rage and there was even a specially designed corset for the mature woman.

What struck me is this is the fictionalised version of a year in the authors life. And what a life she had. I like the realness of death in the book but that was life for me as child. So much death. I plan to find more of her books!

Next up MAY and UNDER THE LILACS 💜

willaful I found the end, in which she has to go back to her old life, truly excruciating. 12mo
TheBookHippie @willaful The realistic me loved it. I agree with you truly excruciating . 12mo

willaful I didn't like the sequel when I read it as a kid but I think now it would be good to see her getting the chance to change her life again. 12mo
TheBookHippie @willaful I plan to read it too, I‘ve never read it. 12mo
DivineDiana Thank you for the link. She had a very interesting life. 12mo
TheBookHippie @DivineDiana She really did. 12mo
rubyslippersreads @willaful I‘m reading it now. It‘s a bit preachy (in the way Little Women is), and Lucinda is quite different, but I‘m still enjoying finding out what happens to her. 12mo
willaful @rubyslipperreads That's probably what I didn't like about it, her being different. 12mo
tpixie Great link. What a storyteller! And her son in law! They lived in Ithaca, New York, and had two children, Margaret (Peggy) and David. Peggy, a children's librarian, married Robert McCloskey, who later became a famous children's author and illustrator, best known for writing Make Way for Ducklings.[4 11mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie So cool I love all the stuff we learn reading these books!!! It‘s all so fascinating and we‘ve made connections every book!!! 11mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes! I have earned a lot of vocabulary with this book! (and others) Most were about clothing pieces. Also: Black Maria: a slang term for a Police vehicle used to transport prisoners, (edited) 11mo

This was a pleasant read, for the most part, though I agree with other reviews that the first death is just really weird and doesn‘t seem to fit with much. The second death had me bawling. I found the ending unsatisfying but probably realistic. My mom read this as a kid and loved it, now I‘ve read it, and kiddo has, too. I love passing books down through the generations. This reminded me of All-of-a-Kind Family in the setting and friendships.

ravenlee @TheBookHippie why do you do this to me? I was a crying mess for a good half hour! #childrensclassicread2023 12mo

I found this book, set in late 19th-century NY, to be mostly a delight. During a year when her parents are away in Italy, Lucinda's looked after by two ladies & roller skates her way through the city experiencing new things & people. I loved the details of her love for beauty, tabletop theatre performances, & falling in love with Shakespeare. There's quite a tragic turn towards the end as Lucinda learns about the hardships of life.

batsy I cared much less for the casual racism (during a staging of The Tempest, Caliban is painted a "savage brown"), the exoticism of Asians & the Oriental mystique, etc. #ChildrensClassicRead2023 @TheBookHippie 12mo
batsy I didn't know what to make of the "Princess'" death? Murdered as a result of domestic abuse? A serious & horrifying event, but it was dropped into the narrative and despatched with quickly in a rather bizarre fashion ? 12mo
sarahbarnes It sounds endearing in many ways. It‘s hard to deal with the racism of older books. 12mo
See All 20 Comments
batsy @sarahbarnes Yes! Especially when the fictional child character is excited about experiencing difference, but the adult author can only frame it in a way that rehashes the bigotry. 12mo
TheBookHippie I notice this even in old television shows. (Racism) it‘s so so awful 😵‍💫. To know it was “normal” speech says so much of where we are now. The death gave me A Tree Grows In Brooklyn vibes… 12mo
batsy @TheBookHippie I haven't read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn! Definitely a classic I should move up the TBR. 12mo
CarolynM I like the sound of this. Stacked🙂 12mo
batsy @CarolynM It's quite fun and with a unique sensibility. But it does have some dated elements. 12mo
DivineDiana Lovely review. I was charmed by this book. 12mo
rubyslippersreads I need to catch up on this before April ends. 12mo
rubyslippersreads @batsy @TheBookHippie A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books. Although, sadly, it has its casual racism too. 12mo
TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads this book reminded me of it quite a bit. Same sentiment, delightful but unfortunately casual racism. 12mo
batsy @rubyslippersreads @TheBookHippie Thanks for the warning! I do want to read it but I'll know what to expect going in. 12mo
UwannaPublishme Your review says it all! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 12mo
rubyslippersreads The whole Princess Zayda storyline should have been edited out. 12mo
batsy @UwannaPublishme Thanks! 🙂 12mo
batsy @rubyslippersreads Yes, it truly ended on a grim note on top of the exotification. If it was being reissued this is the kind of thing where judicious editing might be something I'm in support of. Or it should have a thorough afterword to walk it through with the kids... That is if kids even read the supplementary stuff 😬 12mo
tpixie I Was quite surprised by the princess storyline. Trinket‘s too, but that seemed more relevant to the story 11mo
batsy @tpixie Yes, Trinket's felt organic to the story. I think maybe the author had a hard time incorporating the Princess storyline in a book meant for children, so the way it ended came off pretty abrupt and strange, as well. 11mo
tpixie @batsy I agree! 11mo

“Lucinda stubbed her toe frequently and would have fallen had not the Night Owl and Tony held firmly to her hands. And this was because she could never cross Madison Square without tilting her head far back to see the magnificent new tower on it, and Diana on tiptoe, bending her bow,to speed its arrow across the city,”I love Diana,”said Lucinda… “She‘s the goddess, defending the city,I hope she‘ll be there forever.” #childrensclassicread2023

Pg 20: Water Babies book is mentioned. I googled it and was surprised to find out what it was about!

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by Charles Kingsley. Written in 1862–1863 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. It was written as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species.

#ThingsInCommon #childrensclassicread2023 @TheBookHippie

At first this seemed very much like other children's books written in the time it was set (not the time it was actually written.) Shades of E. Nesbit in Lucinda making friends with everyone and anyone, and always helping them. But it ended on a much sadder, more realistic note: Lucinda will not be allowed to continue her exuberant life of rollerskating and cross-class friendships.

willaful I remember liking this a lot from my childhood, and really disliking the sequel, The Year of Jubilo. But now I want to reread that, to see if the circumstances of that book give Lucinda more of the life she really wanted to have, instead of the one being born into wealth forced upon her. 12mo
TheBookHippie I want to read the sequel!!! 12mo

This is one #favoritechildrensbook among many, my mother's old copy that I read as a child. Lucinda is a temporary orphan, free to explore Manhattan on her skates at the turn of the last century. She has her supportive and antagonistic relatives. She makes friends, and one dies --I think it was my first book with a real shock of grief in it. She's crazy for The Tempest and has a wonderful tabletop theater I still wish for.
