Study in Charlotte
Study in Charlotte | Brittany Cavallaro
The first book in a witty, suspenseful new trilogy about a brilliant new crime-solving duo: the teen descendants of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. This clever page-turner will appeal to fans of Maureen Johnson and Ally Carter.Jamie Watson has always been intrigued by Charlotte Holmes; after all, their great-great-great-grandfathers are one of the most infamous pairs in history. But the Holmes family has always been odd, and Charlotte is no exception. She's inherited Sherlock's volatility and some of his vices--and when Jamie and Charlotte end up at the same Connecticut boarding school, Charlotte makes it clear she's not looking for friends. But when a student they both have a history with dies under suspicious circumstances, ripped straight from the most terrifying of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Jamie can no longer afford to keep his distance. Danger is mounting and nowhere is safe--and the only people they can trust are each other.

This was a really neat read! Cavallari did a great job of recreating that Watson and Holmes relationship in a new, unique way. It's clear that these characters are descendants of the famous Sherlock and Watson (therefore sharing characteristics), but also their own people (younger and in a different time period).

I'm looking forward to picking up the next in the series!

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories, and I love mysteries with a sassy lady detective type, so I thought this book would go down a treat, and it sure did. I loved Charlotte and John‘s weird relationship, I loved the parallels between the original Holmes and Watson, and I just love watson, in general. Hanging out now to read the others. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an entertaining imagining if Holmes and Watson‘s many great grandchildren met at an American boarding school to fulfill their familial destiny by becoming friends and solving a murder. Told from the voice of a very melodramatic Jamie Watson, I laughed a lot and was kept interested by his interaction with a very pithy Charlotte Holmes. Pick. A survey at work says Cumberbatch and Freeman are the only Holmes and Watson that matters. I‘ve👇🏼

Reggie never seen any of the series or read the original stories which I think would have helped a little. Maybe I missed out on a couple of nods. Still a pick. 3mo
LeahBergen I dunno. Cumberbatch is good but I‘ll always love Jeremy Brett‘s portrayal of Holmes. ❤️ 3mo
erzascarletbookgasm For me Jeremy Brett‘s is the most perfect portrayal but Cumberbatch + Freeman (great pair) brought new life to the characters. I didn‘t like the Miller-Lucy Liu portrayal and RDJ is a big no-no! 🙅‍♀️ (sorry RDJ fans). 3mo

RamsFan1963 I like Cumberbatch, but I'd have to go old school and pick Basil Rathbone as my favorite Sherlock. 3mo
batsy Rathbone and Brett are excellent and way better than Cumberbatch, imho 😁 And I think I'm the only one who holds this opinion but I find Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock more interesting than Cumberbatch's performance, too. This book/series sounds really fun! 3mo
ValerieAndBooks I agree with the above that Jeremy Brett was great as Holmes. This one looks good! 3mo
SupTeaReadBooks @batsy FWIW you‘re not alone when it comes to Miller (after a reread of the books I appreciate his performance even more, to be honest). Brett is my ultimate Holmes though. 3mo

Maybe my expectations were too high going in to this one, but I didn't really enjoy it at all. I didn't connect with the characters. I didn't understand their thoughts or reactions, or how the relationships between them were built and changed. I also felt like there were some really serious topics (murder, rape, drug use, self harm, trauma) that were flippantly dealt with. I'm gonna give the rest of the series a miss.

A follow up to my best camp novels, these are my most favorite boarding school novels for teens. Something about the atmosphere of the boarding school and the drama! 😊 📕

Noticeably missing is Harry Potter. For some reason I don't actually consider those boarding school books. I adore Harry & his adventures, but they are a thing all in themselves.

One of the things that stuck out for me about this book was the writing style of it. It felt different from other modern writing styles. It felt different yet somehow still relatable. I‘m so glad I finally got around to reading this story. I can‘t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series. To see what else Holmes and Watson get themselves into.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t love this book like I was hoping to, but I did manage to enjoy it a bit. I was originally going to give this book 3 stars, but the ending kind of redeemed the book. Overall, I liked the twist of the characters, but I had a hard time loving them until towards the end. I‘m not sure if I will read the rest of the series, but this was a solid novel.

My love of Sherlock Holmes has been restored! Thank you, Brittany Cavallaro!
This was a fun adaptation to read. I loved Jamie Watson because he was so relatable, and I respected Charlotte Holmes because she‘s a fighter.
The mystery was clever and intriguing. I just hope we focus on the mysteries and not the possible romance between Holmes and Watson. That‘s just me though. 😬

So the first of this series, A Study in Charolette, was AMAZING. It was so much fun and everything I like in Sherlock stories and none of the things that the premise made me worried about. I was overjoyed.

I read the rest in a week and was SO disappointed. The writer is good at plot, but terrible at doing things with her characters that make sense. She finished up minor plot points, left big ones, and then gave us an ambiguous ending.

I really enjoyed this #blameitonLitsy mystery, Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson meet at a boarding school in Connecticut. Jamie or Watson as he prefers has been dreaming about solving mysteries with the mysterious Miss Holmes. Now is his chance. A fun retelling, older YA ( trigger warning ⚠️ )

It‘s always the best, and so rare, when a book surprises you in a good way. I had been interested in this series for a while but was hesitant about it because a teen Sherlock Holmes seemed potentially corny.

I was very wrong.

For me, this was one of those almost magical reading experiences where the book and I had just the right chemistry. The story had a lot of things I didn‘t even realize I wanted. In short: I adore Charlotte Holmes.

A charming retelling! The characters were very convincing, in all their brilliant, teenage glory. Jamie, especially, was one precious muffin...& y‘all know how I feel about precious muffins. Their romance was a bit rushed, but believable. The mystery was a touch too obvious. So, not a brilliant whodunnit, but a fun story that does well in recreating the atmosphere of the originals while adding a dash of its own flavor! ★★★½. 3rd for #24in48
