Devil's Bargain
Devil's Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency | Joshua Green
From the reporter who was there at the very beginning comes the revealing inside story of the partnership between Steve Bannon and Donald Trumpthe key to understanding the rise of the alt-right, the fall of Hillary Clinton, and the hidden forces that drove the greatest upset in American political history. Based on dozens of interviews conducted over six years, Green spins the master narrative of the 2016 campaign from its origins in the far fringes of right-wing politics and reality television to its culmination inside Trumps penthouse on election night. The shocking elevation of Bannon to head Trumps flagging presidential campaign on August 17, 2016, hit political Washington like a thunderclap and seemed to signal the meltdown of the Republican Party. Bannon was a bomb-throwing pugilist whod never run a campaign and was despised by Democrats and Republicans alike. Yet Bannons hard-edged ethno-nationalism and his elaborate, years-long plot to destroy Hillary Clinton paved the way for Trumps unlikely victory. Trump became the avatar of a dark but powerful worldview that dominated the airwaves and spoke to voters whom others couldnt see. Trumps campaign was the final phase of a populist insurgency that had been building up in America for years, and Bannon, its inscrutable mastermind, believed it was the culmination of a hard-right global uprising that would change the world. Any study of Trumps rise to the presidency is unavoidably a study of Bannon. Devils Bargain is a tour-de-force telling of the remarkable confluence of circumstances that decided the election, many of them orchestrated by Bannon and his allies, who really did plot a vast, right-wing conspiracy to stop Clinton. To understand Trump's extraordinary rise and Clintons fall, you have to weave Trumps story together with Bannons, or else it doesn't make sense.

The insane, unreal, larger-than-life, Tom-Cruise-esque antics, intellectual history of this stranger-than-fiction guy, Steve Bannon drives the whole. Trump and Bannon were star-crossed lovers, serendipitously drawn together to create a Perfect Storm of Wonderland. We're All Mad Here. His life and wide career, from Goldman Sachs before it went public to working in China on MMORPG community profit, to Hollywood film production to French conspiracies

How long until, “I never heard of him” “I hardly know the guy!

Seriously, when are people going to learn that every person Trump associated with were all making a buck on his Presidency, it‘s all just one big American con job, one get rich scheme after another, all to enrich themselves.

@BarbaraTheBibliophage What‘s first, “I hardly knew him” or “he‘s a great guy, and treated horribly”?

PurpleTulipGirl How long till DOJ tries to interfere? 4y

This was fairly interesting, but I read it because I wanted to learn how someone can be both Harvard educated and also ignorant enough to be a Neo-Nazi. Unfortunately, this book didn't provide many answers.

During his Hollywood years, Bannon was part of a discreet network of religious conservatives in the film industry that was loosely organized by the Wilberforce Forum--an evangelical group chaired by the reformed Watergate felon Chuck Colson--whose mission was to "shape culture from a biblical perspective. Informative. Gave me some historical, religious, and theoretical context. Did not make me feel any less disgusted or horrified, quite the opposite.

I find it tragic that Steve Bannon has cultivated such influence in the US and beyond, but he doesn‘t seem to be going anywhere. This is a very readable (though nauseating) look at Bannon both before and during the 2016 election. Definitely worthwhile, but keep your antacid and a place to vomit close by. 🤢

A strong read about a dark time, Green's book is a powerful story about two men who embody a nation's worst instincts, and the strategy that let them win. The beginning of the book is a bit weak, a sad recitation of a tragic night, but it picks up quickly. Green has genuine insight into the monstrous mindset of the alt-right and the philosophical evolution of American nationalism.

ReadingSusan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk it is! My husband said why are you reading that? It's just making you mad. But I have definitely learned a lot. Like that Bannon has been trying to take down the Clintons for over 25 years. Interesting. 7y

With everything going on, most of my reading has been about the news. It's exhausting and heartbreaking. I always knew racism and hate was alive and well. I just never expected to see it in display the way it was in Charlottesville. It opened my eyes. I realized I know nothing. Coincidently, this book came in yesterday. Know thy enemy...

Notafraidofwords I think Brannon is more dangerous outside the White House and in the media :/ 7y

Newest audiobook (by the way, the book will debut in the #1 spot on the New York Times bestsellers list)

BookishFeminist Ooh looking forward to your thoughts on this. I'm tempted but I've already read a lot of horror recently 😳 7y
