Friends Without Benefits
Friends Without Benefits: An Unrequited Romance | Penny Reid
21 posts | 49 read | 11 to read
Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book #2 in the Knitting in the City Series. There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she's unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit. Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, "benefits" with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth's plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.

Elizabeth had some serious issues to work through in this novel, some of which bordered on annoying with how destructive they were. But I thoroughly enjoyed the antics of her knitting group, Nico, and his meddling, but well-meaning traditional, Italian family.

I look to Reid for light, sweet, funny reads, with the occasional sucker punch to the heart. This had all of those things (I actually rubbed my chest one time, gasping).

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let‘s go with something lighter now. I‘ve been missing Reid, so I‘m excited to dive back into this series! #currentlylistening

I didn't care for the female character and the book bored me

I liked this better than the first book but both main characters are too quirky to be believable. The writing was only so-so but I did like the tension between Nico and Lizzy. I like over-the-top silly in Tessa Dare's novels but silliness in contemporaries are either not well-done or just seem immature to me. For example: Lizzy loves Nico speaking Italian and her panty dance parties.

Also, Lizzy acts like an idiot.

Penny Reid always makes me happy, so I read this when I couldn‘t sleep last night. Now I‘m exhausted and need to take a nap with the kiddos... worth it.

Omg, I fell in love with this book and the characters. Elizabeth grew up believing that her neighbor Nico hated her. Little did she know that is was the exact opposite. I may end up reading the rest of these books because I love the characters that much. It is told from Elizabeth's pov but I actually liked it that way.

I really enjoyed this one! Nico is fantastic. Elizabeth irritated me at times, but I I like her anyway. And, the story is layered, well written, funny, and lovely. I‘m definitely looking forward to the next one!

blithebuoyant I've been seeing this #glorytotheguild tag, what is it? 6y
the.bookish.valkyrie @blithebuoyant a bunch of ladies and a few gents from Felicia Day‘s online book club, #VaginalFantasy, who also happen to play WoW got together as an online “local hangout” group and formed a guild in game. When several guildies joined Litsy we started using #GloryToTheGuild so we could find each other‘s posts easier. 6y

Audiobooking while coloring! First try, and it‘s wonderful! The sparkly gel pens are fun, but messy! Need to hunt down my color pencils for the next page!

TommieMarie74 So pretty!!!! 😍😍😍. Also, I think I also have severe sarcastic syndrome. Every fight with my BF in our first year was because of my sarcasm. A joke in our house now is to yell “it was just a joke” every time I use sarcasm. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 6y

5🌟 I really enjoyed this book.. love when a hero speaks another language to heroine.(and the author had translations in the kindle verison!) Chemistry and tension was good, narration was well done. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I 😍Reid's #Winstons but this early novel from her #knittinginthecity series is exasperating. It reads like a Grey's Anatomy fanfic:what happens to whatshername when a Danny-like teen love dies? Spoiler: she refuses to grow up, sleeps with men she hates, and is a dick to her childhood family friend/ first lover, who is,unfathomably, in love with her and insists that they belong together. But as an academic, I find it rich for analysis. #romantsy

Jillybeane I‘ve seen a bunch of people reading this (and liking it) and considered giving it a go. I‘m a knitter, but this isn‘t my genre. Thanks for the review ☺️ 6y
Jaya @Jillybeane there are some fun knitting scenes in the series but it‘s not the focus by any means. 6y

#audioknitting!!! This #romance novel is addictive, I can't stop listening.

Starting a new project - I only have a trillion other projects on the needles.

tricours Ooh I need to make that as well! 7y
saresmoore That yarn is lovely! What fiber? 7y
julesG @Annl I'm an Aries, so starting new projects is my thing. Finishing though...? @tricours I love Melanie's patterns. @saresmoore it's all 100% merino wool, the grey and yellowish yarns are "Wollkenschaf" (German dyer) and the coppery one is "Wollmeise" (another German dyer). 7y
LeahBergen That's gorgeous! 7y

Almost 8 hours into the #24in48 #readathon, and I've finished my first book. This will never be my favorite Reid #romantsy. I didn't connect with Elizabeth the way I connected with the heroines of the other books, and there were times when the story dragged. But, it's still a pick because Penny has mad writing skills and I enjoyed the humor and realism. Onto the next book in the series...

My Kindle is stocked for #24in48. Lots of light reading, plus a few heavier choices if I feel the need for something meatier. 😎

Heretherebedragons I love Penny Reid! I'm mid-way through "Truth or Beard" and it's great. I love the characters, and I've laughed so hard my eyes leaked. 7y

Ugh. I have terrible insomnia. I need to sleep because I have to work tomorrow, but my stupid brain won't shut up and instead runs make-believe scenarios of my dog dying the next time I take him to for a dental cleaning. After literally sobbing for half an hour, I gave up on sleep and started a new Penny Reid book. But I need sleep 😴.

Liatrek My current situation 😴I'll be rubbish tomorrow at work but pages will have been read😊 7y
CoverToCoverGirl When I can't sleep I listen to an audio book until it knocks me out.... 7y
AmyG I know I have not slept enough when I wake up....and my first thought is "when can I nap?". ? That is today. 7y
DGRachel @CoverToCoverGirl I wish I'd thought of that. Instead, I read until nearly 3 o'clock and then slept through my alarm. I was 10 min late leaving my house. 😔 7y
