The Night Manager
The Night Manager | John le Carre
In The Night Manager, John le Carr's first post-Cold War novel, an ex-soldier helps British Intelligence penetrate the secret world of ruthless arms dealers.'Le Carr is the equal of any novelist now writing in English' Guardian'A marvellously observed relentless tale' Observer At the start of it all, Jonathan Pine is merely the night manager at a luxury hotel. But when a single attempt to pass on information to the British authorities - about an international businessman at the hotel with suspicious dealings - backfires terribly, and people close to Pine begin to die, he commits himself to a battle against powerful forces he cannot begin to imagine. In a chilling tale of corrupt intelligence agencies, billion-dollar price tags and the truth of the brutal arms trade, John le Carr creates a claustrophobic world in which no one can be trusted.'Complex and intense ... page-turning tension' San Francisco Chronicle'When I was under house arrest I was helped by the books of John le Carr ... they were a journey into the wider world ... These were the journeys that made me feel that I was not really cut off from the rest of humankind' Aung San Suu Kyi'One of those writers who will be read a century from now' Robert Harris'He can communicate emotion, from sweating fear to despairing love, with terse and compassionate conviction' Sunday Times (on The Spy Who Came in from the Cold)'Return of the master . . . Having plumbed the devious depths of the Cold War, le Carr has done it again for our nasty new age' The Times (on Our Kind of Traitor)

He managed to make undercover work and espionage seem boring and for the book to drag. I hoped, and hoped for some excitement, but it stayed at a disappointing monotone, even though the action picked up. Maybe I read too many detective, crime, espionage stories in my time, and this just fell flat. I am not familiar with the TV show. #unpopularopinion #recentlyread #nospoilers

I'm not much one for the style of writing but the plot was terrific and full of intrigue. A little slow to start perhaps but it picks up and maintains a pretty good intensity as you get into it.

Over 80% in and I have no idea how this thriller will end. Lots of balls in the air and conflicting interests all around... Putting off my plan to box up books for donation to the book fair to find out (hence the messy pile in the background).

I actually watched the tv series with Tom Hiddleston before I read the book because it had Tom Hiddelston in it. I absolutely loved both of them. The book had a lot more details than the show which just made imagining it in my head so much better. I was thinking about the show and adding in the details from the book that were not in the show. All in all I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Although the book remains unread by me, I thoroughly enjoyed this miniseries on Amazon Prime. Equally tense and gorgeous to look at, the most fascinating characters are the ones played by Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debecki. Although it's a little violent, it's great fun and escapist entertainment for these chilly winter nights. I'll definitely be reading the book next year.

Dragon The mini series was so good! Tom Hiddleston 💕🐉 6y
Tomigirl44 The miniseries is great - watched it twice - both Tom Huddleston and Hugh Laurie play their parts well. 6y

Could not get into this book at all, had to bail which I don't do very often. I think the Jonathan Pine character just didn't appeal to me at all, which is a shame as I really enjoyed the mini series. Oh well, onto the next book 📚

saradxxiii Still Alice is so, so good. I read it five or six years ago and still think about it sometimes. (edited) 6y

Anyone read this one? I'm trying to get into it, but I'm having trouble. Does it pick up? I've only read one other Le Carre, The Constant Gardener, and I found it slow to start but then gripping. I'm trying to decide whether this is worth sticking out to see if it's the same...

swishandflick I haven't read it but have been meaning to because I loved the series!! 7y
DGRachel I haven't read this one, but I find all of Le Carre's books start slow, but there's usually a great reward for hanging on. That said, there are lots of great books in the universe - if you want to bail, do it. 7y
rabbitprincess I bailed on this one. I found the shifts in chronology annoying. Normally I love le Carré though so it might just be that book in particular that's weird. 7y

TheKidUpstairs @DGRachel I'm going to give it until 25% ( I'm reading it on my kobo). I really like the main character, so I'm willing to give it as much of a try as i can. But in the end, you're right, too many great books to give too much time to one I'm not feeling! 7y
TheKidUpstairs @swishandflick I want to watch the series! I love Hugh Laurie, and Tom Hiddleston is 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 7y
TheKidUpstairs @rabbitprincess good to know I'm not the only one having a hard time with this one. I'm going to try for a bit more, but I may end up bailing if it doesn't grab me soon! 7y

I'm almost finished my current read, I've been slowly turning the pages, not wanting it to end. But I'm obviously thinking about my next one. I watched the night manager series first and loved it, ?? so I figured I'll get into my first Le Carré.

Pam.Kokomo I just brought home from the library "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold." My first by this author too! I will add this one to my TBR. 7y

I loved the miniseries so picked up the book after and really liked it. I'm not sure I would have followed all of the twists and turns if I hadn't watched it, but the movie was quite different from the book so they were both enjoyable. Spy thriller with a little more moral/ethical dilemmas than the usual fare.

Part of me is glad that I watched the mini-series first so that I have a picture of the characters in my head...

Erincruey I noticed that playing "The Old Republic" has really helped me when reading "Annihilation". The characters make more sense and the settings seem more real since "I've been there" (at least in game, ha ha!). Books make great companions for other forms of entertainment! 8y
MeganMarieWrites @Erincruey you would LOVE The Night Manager!! It was a six part series on AMC with Tom Hiddleston as the lead. It originally aired on the BBC and AMC picked it up! 8y

I really wanted to enjoy this, but the writing style nearly caused me to quit halfway through. The plot is extremely intriguing and the pacing works well. The biggest problem is narrators can often change mid-sentence. 3/5 stars.

Subtle, complex, and proper spy work - there's no flashy James Bond type stuff here. This was my second reading of THE NIGHT MANAGER and just like rereads of other le Carré novels, there's a new layer to be peeled back with every reading. Heads up: more intricate than the tv adaptation.

This is the perfect book for a rainy afternoon - you can cosy up in bed and completely immerse yourself in the tangled and layered web that le Carré weaves (no books were harmed in the taking of this picture).
