Chasing Space
Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances | Leland Melvin
15 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
In this moving, inspirational memoir, a former NASA astronaut and NFL wide receiver shares his personal journey from the gridiron to the stars, examining the intersecting roles of community, perseverance and grace that align to create the opportunities for success. Leland Melvin is the only person in human history to catch a pass in the National Football League and in space. Though his path from the gridiron to the heavens was riddled with setbacks and injury, Leland persevered to reach the stars. While training with NASA, Melvin suffered a severe injury that left him deaf. Leland was relegated to earthbound assignments, but chose to remain and support his astronaut family. His loyalty paid off. Recovering partial hearing, he earned his eligibility for space travel. He served as mission specialist for two flights aboard the shuttle Atlantis, working on the International Space Station. In this inspirational memoir, the former NASA astronaut and professional athlete offers an examination of the intersecting role of community, perseverance, and grace that align to shape our opportunities and outcomes. Chasing Space is not the story of one man, but the story of many men, women, scientists, and mentors who helped him defy the odds and live out an uncommon destiny. As a chemist, athlete, engineer and space traveler, Lelands life story is a study in the science of achievement. His personal insights illuminate how grit and grace, are the keys to overcoming adversity and rising to success.

I wish this had been better organized. His story is certainly interesting, but the book feels really scattered. Some sections went on much too long and there are other sections I'd love to have heard more about. Listened on audio, here's a shot from a walk.

It was short. This book had a lovely narrator and I quite enjoyed learning about him. #readharderchallenge2019 a book by an aoc set in or about space

#unpopularopinion Leland Melvin has an amazing life. HE WENT TO SPACE!! But wow this book was not amazing. It was all over the place, I am left with more questions than answers and way more information on less interesting parts of his life than I needed. It‘s a quick read so give it a go yourself.

I don't think I'll ever go to #space but I enjoy reading nonfiction about the people who have gone or who played a role in the US space race. It was fun to meet the author of the tagged book at my local book store this spring.

It's not every day you get to meet an astronaut! Leland Melvin has a great story to tell. Another great author event at my local indie, Quail Ridge Books.

I‘m cheating for #GiveawayArtemis, because the only novel in space I can remember is The Martian and that‘s too obvious! (I did really like it, though!)

So can we all just 🙌🏻 for Leland Melvin including his dogs in his NASA photo, which is also the cover pic for his book? ❤️

How can you not want to know more about the man who puts his dogs in his official NASA photo and on his book cover?

Leland Melvin has had such an interesting life. From playing football in the NFL and getting cut, to training at NASA and enduring an unfortunate accident that made him temporarily deaf, and eventually recovering to go on critical missions to the International Space Station. This man does. not. quit. He is truly an inspiration.

I'm currently in a long distance relationship, and today I found a box of books on my doorstep from my boyfriend! No special occasion, just because! He has definitely figured out the 🔑 to my heart! The chasing space has a forward by Katherine Johnson (from Hidden Figures)!
