After Perfect
After Perfect: A Daughters Memoir | Christina McDowell
15 posts | 10 read | 25 to read
A searing memoir of loss and redemption. People In the tradition of New York Times bestsellers What Remains by Carole Radziwill and Oh the Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey, Christina McDowells unflinching memoir is a brutally honest, cautionary tale about one familys destruction in the wake of the Wall Street implosion. Christina McDowell was born Christina Prousalis. She had to change her name to be legally extricated from the trail of chaos her father, Tom Prousalis, left in the wake of his arrest and subsequent imprisonment as one of the guilty players sucked into the collateral fallout of Jordan Belfort (the Wolf of Wall Street). Christina worshipped her father and the seemingly perfect life they liveda life she finds out was built on lies. Christinas family, as is typically the case, had no idea what was going on. Nineteen-year-old Christina drove her father to jail while her mother dissolved in denial. Since then, Christinas life has been decimated. As her family floundered in rehab, depression, homelessness, and loss, Christina succumbed to the grip of alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity before finding catharsis in the most unlikely of places. From the bucolic affluence of suburban Washington, DC, to the A-list clubs and seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, this provocative memoir unflinchingly describes the harsh realities of a fall from grace. Full of nineties nostalgia and access to the inner circles of the Washingtonian societal elite, Christina McDowells beautiful memoir is a Blue Jasmine story from a daughters perspective.

So here‘s the thing about this review. I‘m biased. I knew the author growing up and read the book on a recommendation from my mom. I have nothing but respect for a girl who tells her truth and Christina McDowell does in this book. A girl who grew up with nothing but the best is suddenly broke, her father is in jail and her good name is ruined. This books teaches a hard life lesson learned by a kind intelligent woman.

I finished this one last night and promptly passed out. It‘s a riveting account of the daughter of a multi millionaire who lost everything and went to prison back in the mid 2000s when the economy crashed. Christina Prousalis woke up one morning not knowing that her entire life was about to take a drastic turn. The anger I felt towards her parents and how they acted in the aftermath got worse with every page. I can‘t fathom their actions.

Reviewsbylola Thank you for sending me this @Cinfhen I couldn‘t put it down. Now sending it over to @Mdargusch and @emilyhaldi 6y
RebelReader Sounds awesome! Stacking it to my ever growing list! 😬 6y
Cinfhen Her parents were horrible!!! Her mom!!!! Ugh😞It is a page turner but something about Christine felt disingenuous🤷‍♀️ 6y

Reviewsbylola I was surprised she seemed more forgiving towards her mom. I thought they were equally heinous and unforgivable. @Cinfhen 6y

#GetMovin Not sure anyone can really claim a #perfectlife but growing up Christina McDowell describes a real life fairytale 🏰castles and ponies, private planes, never ending parties and all the luxuries until the FEDS arrived at her mansion with guns blazing and they arrested her father; her knight in shining armor. It‘s a fascinating story about greed, money, want & insatiable need but I was unable to find sympathy for Christina. #ImNotEvil

TrishB I don‘t know this story 👍🏻 6y
eanderson This sounds good! 6y
Mdargusch Sounds like a good one! I‘m not familiar with this story at all. 6y

Cinfhen I bailed on Hausfrau @Reviewsbylola 😂this is an easy read, it sucks you right in 6y
Reviewsbylola I only read 40 pages. I just couldn‘t do it. @emilyhaldi gave it five stars!! 6y
Cinfhen I remember @Reviewsbylola because we were reading at the same time and I was wondering WTF book is she reading?!?! Because my Hausfrau was slow, dark & depressing....like @shawnmooney would say “ I wanted to rip out my eyeballs “ 😂😂😂 6y
emilyhaldi @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola I LOVE dark and depressing.. and moody!!! I thought the writing was incredible 🖤 I think I have a couple of cool littens who are on #teamemily 😉 @LauraBeth @BarbaraBB you guys loved Hausfrau too, right?! 6y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi I am definitely on #teamemily, I also love dark stories and Hausfrau was exactly how I like them! And I think @LauraBeth loved it too indeed! So, @Cinfhen and @Reviewsbylola , you may want to reconsider 😉?! 6y
LauraBeth @emilyhaldi definitely with you and @BarbaraBB on this one - dark and depressing is my jam! Loved Hausfrau! I was just thinking of re-reading it 😀 (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola I don‘t mind Dark and depressing. The writing was just too removed for me. @emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB @LauraBeth 6y
Cinfhen Yes, I think @Reviewsbylola defined my dislike better @LauraBeth @BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi the writing felt flat, too detached ~ but I may try again 6y

#DecDays I mean no disrespect to Christina McDowell but her searing memoir was the first book I thought of for today‘s prompt #YoungDumbBroke Christina is definitely not dumb, her story is about disillusionment and discovery ~ The story is as much Christina‘s relationship with money as it is with her father, mother & house of lies. Having so much to having almost nothing & lacking the tools to manage. {Still something felt disingenuous }

Cinfhen http://spoti.fi/2zUg6mp have a listen 🎵 6y
TrishB Don‘t know song or book! Will have a listen later as scrolling in bed and hubby asleep!! 6y
Reggie Idk, I‘ve never heard of her, but I looked her up online and watched an interview about the book, and agree with your last statement. Something‘s off. But now I want to read this book. 6y

#LyricalApril Day 18 #MoneyGrabber After Perfect written by Christina Prousalis is a timely tale of greed, misplaced love, corruption, assigning worth towards material possessions and the breakdown of a family. I found both the story & the people involved to be overwhelmingly pompous & lacking sympathy. It was difficult for me to truly feel sorry for any of them, as I did not feel any real remorse. I do respect the author for sharing her story.

Reviewsbylola I have become more and more certain I'll hate Bardo. 😂 7y
Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola @BarbaraTheBibliophage @britt_brooke @shawnmooney I'm pretty certain I'm going to struggle with Lincoln 😖I gave in to the hype way to early....should have waited....we'll see! 7y
Cinfhen @Little_Reader you saved yourself about 7 hours....good call! I was enjoying until the story dragged and became ridiculous 😫 7y
Cinfhen I'm interested in After Perfect in part to learn the fallout from Wolf of Wall Street @Notafraidofwords @LauraBeth 7y
shawnmooney You have no idea how much I want to read – and then bail on – Tell Me How This Ends because of the field day I would have writing a bail review. With a title like that, they're just asking for it! LOL 7y
Cinfhen @shawnmooney The book doesn't stand a chance!!! I'm happy to include it with the others because I'm never going to read it again... 7y
shawnmooney @Cinfhen Lol. I just read your review. I think it'd be a waste of time and money sending that one to me. 😍 7y

As I've said in the past, I'm not really a fan of memoirs. That being said, there was something about Christina's story that drew me in and had me rooting for her on her downward spiral. I'm happy I chose this one as part of a precious #BOTM box.

Lauren.Archer I keep seeing this book, but can't see it as an option in BOTM. 7y
morgan_krahn @Lauren.Archer hmm, I wonder why that is! I found it on the BOTM site, but if I remember right I have to go quite a ways back to find it... 7y

I'm not normally one for memoirs...but something about this one was intriguing to me. Seeing as thought it's #BOTM eve I thought I would tackle another off my ever growing pile of unread #BOTM picks that life seems to not let me get around to!

mcipher I love that bookmark quote! I want that 8th day. ❤️ 7y

Vblancsbooks I read it, didn't think it was groundbreaking, just rich family problems that kept me interested. 7y
Notafraidofwords I read this a while ago and truly liked it. I think her accountability and her desire to make certain things right is more than most people would do. 7y
Megabooks I will @Lacythebookworm ! @Vblancsbooks I do find that interesting when I'm in the right mood. @Notafraidofwords I'm glad you liked it because we more often than not agree on books. 😃 7y
