Through a Window
Through a Window: My Thirty Years with the Chimpanzees of Gombe | Jane Goodall
14 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
Through a Window is the dramatic saga of thirty years in the life of an intimately intertwined communityone that reads like a novel, but is one of the most important scientific works ever published. The community is Gombe, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where the principal residents are chimpanzees and one extraordinary woman who is their student, protector, and historian. In her classic In the Shadow of Man, Jane Goodall wrote of her first ten years at Gombe. In Through a Window she brings the story up to the present, painting a more complete and vivid portrait of our closest relatives. We watch young Figans relentless rise to power and old Mikes crushing defeat. We learn how one mother rears her children to succeed and another dooms hers to failure. We witness horrifying murders, touching moments of affection, joyous births, and wrenching deaths. In short, we see every emotion known to humans stripped to its essence. In the mirror of chimpanzee life, we see ourselves reflected.

I just adore Jane Goodall. Following the chimps of Gombe is an always fascinating delight (even though there is some truly great tragedy detailed here). Reseach has been ongoing for nearly sixty years now and while Goodall has many more books there is not another in this vein (following the research and close views of the chimpanzee families in Gombe in the way that this book and her earlier, In the Shadow of Man, do).

Another wonderful book from Jane Goodall. In this one she goes into more detail about the life stories of certain chimpanzees and specific aspects of their behaviour. I especially loved the sections on different mothers and babies, the way not all female chimpanzees are good mothers and how the chimps turn out later. The last few chapters focus on chimpanzees in captivity and are really heartbreaking 💔

ReadZenRites That‘s very interesting that not all chimps are good mothers. I think we human mommas sometimes forget that little about mothering comes instinctively. 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @ReadZenRites it's very interesting! One of the mothers they observed was absolutely terrible with her first, but at least better with later babies! I think for us too a lot has to do with our own experiences and exposure to child-rearing. 6y
ReadZenRites The chimps get better w experience, too. So cool! 6y

It's been quite a busy morning with a friend's daughter playing with us, but now we're downstairs in the garden and I'm trying to read a bit while the kids make "nature food" ?

Took my new read off the shelf - a book that was on our shelves almost my whole childhood and that I decided I must finally read - to find this cute bookmark that must have come from the Caledon Library where my mom worked as a librarian in her first job before she met and married my dad! It must be easily 40 years old!

It's #WorldWildlifeDay today!

Jane Goodall is one of the most prominent scientists doing research on wildlife, how humanity impacts it, and how it impacts us. We're all part of the same ecosystem. Environmental justice has an important place alongside social justice. 🌏🌿🐒

I remember exactly when I knew I would be an English teacher. I was in 1st grade and had gotten a C in a quiz. My determination never wavered: I had found my vocation. Except it did. When I was 13 my family took me to Busch Gardens, FL. Upon exiting the gorilla exhibit there was a cart that sold, among of their souvenirs, books. I bought this one with my own money. 👇🏻#ReadJanuary #Autobiography

WanderingBookaneer I was mesmerized by Goodall's life. The book opened up my eyes to this world of female primatologists. I devoured every book I could find on the subject and, for a while, considered studying this… Until I realized I did not like studying science just reading about it for pleasure. My crush on this woman continues to this day. The experience described on this book and subsequent ones are awesome—and I'm not one to use that word lightly. 7y
jessdean Wow. Love how it made such an impression on you. 7y
LeahBergen I love her to bits and she's a big reason why I have a minor in Primatology. 💗 7y
