Upside of Unrequited (International)
Upside of Unrequited (International) | Becky Albertalli
"Heart-fluttering, honest, and hilarious. I can't stop hugging this book." --Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss"I have such a crush on this book! Not only is this one a must read, but it's a must re-read." --Julie Murphy, New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin'From the award-winning author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda comes a funny, authentic novel about sisterhood, love, and identity. Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love. No matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can't stomach the idea of rejection. So she's careful. Fat girls always have to be careful. Then a cute new girl enters Cassie's orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly's cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly's totally not dying of loneliness--except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie's new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. If Molly can win him over, she'll get her first kiss and she'll get her twin back. There's only one problem: Molly's coworker, Reid. He's a chubby Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there's absolutely no way Molly could fall for him. Right?

book 2 of the Simon vs the homosapien universe, much better than the third. Miscommunication is strong in this one but ya know teenagers, but I like the couple a lot, they are very sweet, albeit straight (which I point it bc it‘s the only straight couple in the series of books) but I still like them.

Cute story that brought many of the adorable feelings of Simon vs the Homosapiens, but beyond meet-cutes, it's also a story of sisterhood, growing up, growing apart, and accepting yourself.

I can always could on Becky Albertalli if I‘ve had a lot of bails lately. Her books are so good and I haven‘t bailed on a single one yet. This book was one of the better ones this moth. I still prefer Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat, but this was a really good book as well. 5⭐️ this book does not tie in to Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, so you can read these two out of order.

I forgot just how cute this book was! I loved watching Molly grow into herself and her relationships with Cassie and Reid, and her mothers' wedding at the end brought back all the joy I felt after Obergefell v. Hodges. And Simon's little cameos are perfect! 🌈 #yalit #contemporaryfiction

This book was a love hate relationship. The characters seemed flatly developed and the plot a little too much. Except its cute in a cutesy romance novel and everything fit perfectly into perfect pieces at the end.

This was sweet, and cute, and everything good. I didn‘t like it as much as Simon, but it checked all the boxes you look for in a feel good YA story. Quick and easy and fun (and funny!), well developed characters and a plot that makes you care.

I love Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda, so I had bought this at least a year ago since it has some tie-in. This one takes place after Simon & before Leah on the Offbeat. It‘s a diverse read, but I didn‘t enjoy it as much as Simon. The main romance was cute, but I wanted more depth to the book. The MC worries the whole book about her body and boyfriends. There is a good theme of coping with change.
This is my #triplespin book. @TheAromaofBooks

This was a quick, fun read that I picked mainly because it was on a list of books with main characters who deal with anxiety. It‘s a cute first-love story, but something about it felt off to me that I can‘t quite put my finger on. But it deals with a lot of issues that teens face and would probably make a good movie.

This book is kind of hard to rate... I didn‘t love the main character, but didn‘t hate her. She talked so negatively about herself that it was a little annoying, and that aspect of her character didn‘t really evolve, but wasn‘t brought up anymore. I really liked her family and support network. Overall 3.5/5 ⭐️

PerksOfBeingABookworm While the MC is not a lesbian, Upside of Unrequited is often called a #queerbooks because there are several lesbian characters (twin sister and moms and a couple other). (edited) 4y

I think this has been my favourite in the Simon-verse. It's cute and funky, although still had some typical YA stuff that I usually find annoying. Much better than Leah on the Offbeat. I didn't feel it was trying too hard, which was my main complaint about Leah.

I didn‘t even realize that this book was in correlation with the “Love Simon” movie! This book was my second one on my surgery reading list and it was very good! It tells the story of 2 twins who are being raised by same sex parents Nadine and Patty. The book is about being accepted for who you are and accepting your flaws because those that really care about us will see right through them and focus on who we really are.

So I missed the fact that Simon Vs The Homo Sapians Agenda, The Upside of Unrequited, & Leah on the Offbeat were all connected. Yup, totally didn't pick up on it at all, and thus read them out of order both by publication date and chronologically. Blah. In hindsight, I have regrets. Oh well. Still liked this book. I liked how different Molly & her twin sister are. It breaks all the sterotypical storylines and is just overall refreshing.

MelissaSue81 Hmm. What order did you read them in? I loved Simon... didn‘t love Leah, but really liked this one, but it took me a bit to be sold on. I LOVED the boy in this book. I had a crush on him too. 5y
MaggieCarr I read her books in this order: Simon, What If It's Us, Leah, then Upside. I thought only Simon and Leah were a pairing and the other two were standalone titles. But Upside would have connected Simon and Leah. I agree with you, I really enjoyed Simon and What If It's Us but Leah was just okay for me as well as Unrequited. Have you read Dumplin' by Julie Murphy? I loved Mitch in that book (not in Netflix retelling) but Mitch reminded me of Reid. 😍 5y

A book about high school love crushes for Valentine‘s Day, during my current “read all the kids and YA” books phase. This is a cute and funny one, with a refreshing open view. I have to admit, the inappropriate grandma was probably my favorite character. I loved the strong family bonds and the exploration of how sibling relationships ebb and flow when boyfriends/girlfriends enter in.

This was another cute coming of age story by Albertalli. She does a great job at showing diverse characters. I will say while I enjoyed the characters, I didn‘t feel as invested in them as Simon and Leah. Pinterest obsessed, first kiss longing and body image issues all work great together to create a sweet little story.

This book was just what I needed to destress and get me partway out of my reading slump! I loved that the main character was a fat girl dealing with the anxieties of trying to find love while fat - I remember being that teenager so clearly. And I loved the LGBTQ representation, made even better by the fact that they were just perceived throughout the book as normal people in normal relationships. I liked the Abby cameos too.

I am so sad too almost be done with this book! I like it more than Simon, by far. I have heard people say they don't like it bc the main character "just wants a boyfriend," but I don't agree. She's a 17 year old with anxiety- it isn't just that she thinks no boys like her, she thinks no one likes her. And she is a fat girl, which I love and identify with. Love the romance and the family dynamic too ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This particular book was about Mollie, a 17 yr old (& Abby's cousin) who has less than stellar self-confidence. She's never even kissed a boy! So when her twin sister Cassie gets a gf, how will it affect their relationship?

Finished this one at work last night. Becky Albertalli has a fantastic way of creating a fictional world where all of her characters have beautiful relationships blossoming, & they all face real everyday problems. 4.5🌟

Finally had a chance to take a bunch of pics while LO slept today... So this is my #TBR for the month of December. Not pictured are an audiobook (Upside of Unrequited), an Ebook (My True Love Gave To Me), and my #CoffeeBeanBookClub picks. A bit ambitious with all the things I need to get done for the holidays, but some of them are small and should go by quickly. I will also be reading lots of Christmas themed books (and others) with LO ❤

I really enjoyed the book! Becky Albertalli does a great job of capturing the mindset of a seventeen-year-old with anxiety. Like Becky's other books, the story is cute, and the characters go through highly realistic issues. It was a nice quick read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I love a fun YA love story. Plus, Albertalli is always good for diverse characters and storylines. This is so important for younger readers especially because it doesn‘t feel forced here, just a natural part of a realistic story. Well done! My only complaint is the 17-year-olds‘ co-ed (plus at least one significant other) sleepover. Whose parents knowingly allow this nonsense in their homes? Sure as HELL not mine. I‘m 100% okay with that.
