Napoleon's Hemorrhoids
Napoleon's Hemorrhoids: And Other Small Events That Changed History | Phil Mason
8 posts | 5 read | 16 to read
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleons Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Masons many revelations, youll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. Youll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleons painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield. Youll learn that an irate blacksmith threw his hammer at a fox and missed, hitting a rock and revealing the largest vein of silver ever discovered, thus changing the finances of Canada forever. Interestingly, Charlton Heston was cast as Moses in The Ten Commandments because his broken nose made him look like Michelangelos famous sculpture of Moses. Finally, no one knows Einsteins last words. They were in German, a language his nurse did not speak. A treasure trove filled with fascinating anecdotes about the tiny ripples that created big waves in history, Napoleons Hemorrhoids is much more than just a trivial fact book; it is an astonishing historical-fate book revealing how our most famous incidents, best-loved works of art, and most accepted historical outcomes are simply twists of fate.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fun little collection of odd historical events. Mason brings to light how each event had a much larger impact than the event initially appeared to have.
A quick read.

If you believe in fate or destiny this might not be for you. However, if you believe, as I do, that history (and life) is a messy series of chance, luck (good & bad), coincidence and plain stupidity, then I think you'll find this compendium of unusual facts to be most enjoyable. Who knew a high school diploma could have averted WWII?!? 4 🍀🍀🍀🍀

I wasn't going to book shop this month. That lasted six days. But I picked many fewer books than I could have. In honor of cutting back, I'm starting a new feature. #booksIalmostbought

This title just made me laugh, and is probably pretty interesting. But, it went back in the shelf.

Clare-Dragonfly I actually bought my husband that book a while back! He loves it but it's exactly his thing—weird history. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Snow Thanks! I thought it'd be fun since I'm trying to cut back, but still love the hunt for a great book at a bargain price. 😍 6y

Yesterday's #bookhaul from the thrift shop. I guess I have a thing for somewhat obscure nonfiction titles. ? My husband came into the shop with me and I got to say, "Would you hang on to Napoleon's Hemorrhoids while I browse a little more?"

Leniverse 😂 7y

MrBook My father called me the other day and asked what I was doing. I told him I was reading about Napoleon's hemorrhoids. He laughed and said I am indeed whacky. 7y
