Cibola Burn
Cibola Burn | James S.A. Corey
The explosive fourth novel in James S.A. Corey's New York Times bestselling Expanse series. Now a Syfy Original series, coming December 2015! ENTER A NEW FRONTIER. "An empty apartment, a missing family, that's creepy. But this is like finding a military base with no one on it. Fighters and tanks idling on the runway with no drivers. This is bad juju. Something wrong happened here. What you should do is tell everyone to leave." The gates have opened the way to a thousand new worlds and the rush to colonize has begun. Settlers looking for a new life stream out from humanity's home planets. Ilus, the first human colony on this vast new frontier, is being born in blood and fire. Independent settlers stand against the overwhelming power of a corporate colony ship with only their determination, courage, and the skills learned in the long wars of home. Innocent scientists are slaughtered as they try to survey a new and alien world. The struggle on Ilus threatens to spread all the way back to Earth. James Holden and the crew of his one small ship are sent to make peace in the midst of war and sense in the midst of chaos. But the more he looks at it, the more Holden thinks the mission was meant to fail. And the whispers of a dead man remind him that the great galactic civilization that once stood on this land is gone. And that something killed it. A bit slower paced then the prior three books. However, this also expands the universe in a dramatic way and has some really interesting conflict at its core. My least favorite in the series so far, but still really good.

Finished book 4 of The Expanse series, and I think it‘s my favourite since book 1 (Leviathan Wakes). The series features great characters, and exciting plots. While it‘s a work of science fiction, it‘s not full of hard science. I think of the series more as adventure books set in space. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Viji Love these too! The tv series starts back up in December 😁 13mo

After not being able to settle on any one book over the past few days, I managed to read about 100 pages of the pictured novel last night and just want to keep going. Any fans of Sci FI space operas that haven‘t already read The Expanse series might want to check it out. It‘s awesome!

Tonight‘s tea is white cranberry bark by David‘s Tea. It‘s my favourite of their herbal blends, and is only available at this time of year.

MrT You're absolutely right. Expanse is one of the best Sci-fi series I've ever read. Due to start No.6 shortly and hopefully wil finish it before the new season drops on Prime. 13mo

Not reviewing because I didn‘t read it, “only” watching the 4th season with my significant other.

For my taste it took way too long until it picked up pace. I mean, I see why/that the conflict refugees/UNN is important and relevant but yeah, it was a bit dull for me.

And that ending. Really cheap. An attack on … as cliffhanger. 🙄

Altogether that book/season was okay in the end but flat compared to the others.

Another great installment of The Expanse. The nice again the Roci crew is sent to a stressful situation and must make the best of it with limited resources and help too far away. It was interesting to see more about the civilization that engineered the protomolecule.

“One of my teachers back in school used to say that contagion was the one absolute proof of community. People could pretend there weren‘t drug users and prostitutes and unvaccinated children all they wanted, but when the plague came through, all that mattered was who was actually breathing your air. “

How very pandemic appropriate this has turned out to be lol.

Current read. I always like to keep a non-work related book on hand at all times -- usually something from a #scifi or fantasy series that I can read over the course of a year or two. The Expanse series has fit the bill nicely so far. 🚀

I absolutely love these books. The crew of the Rocinante are some of my very favorite characters, and their stories are always tons of fun. I'm torn between wanting to race through the series and wanting to slow down so I don't run out of them too quickly.

This is my current #crochet blanket progress. I love making giant blankets to curl up in as I read. It's currently five feet long but I want it to be bigger still.

Kaye Pretty 4y
LeahBergen It‘s lovely! 4y
See All 7 Comments
Kaye Did you do the pattern as diagonal or is that just the way it‘s laying ? I only ever tried one diagonal afghan. It went along fine while I was increasing, but when I began the decreasing part, wow, did I mess up. It turned out really whopperjawed. 4y
EllanaRose @kaye - I'm doing it from the corner. I had the same thing when I was doing a scarf like this, but I think I've got the hang of it now. Hopefully at least! 4y
Kaye So did you say you‘re making it bigger ? Will it turn out square then or is there a way to increase length once you get the width you want ? And what colors and kind of yarn are you using ? Looks like shades of pinks ? 4y
EllanaRose @kaye - I'm doing 5 balls increase, and 5 balls decrease so it'll be square. At least I'm hoping it will be! I'm using style craft batik swirl in foxglove, gorgeous pinks and purples in a semi gradient effect. 4y

speljamr @Melissa_J It started out a little slow, but it's picking up quickly. The initial part of the story with the typical Belter/Earther conflict doesn't grab me, but the bigger overarching series story of the protomolecule is the more interesting part for me. 4y

A half-hour on the train going to work, a half-hour at lunch, a half-hour on the train coming home, and maybe if I'm lucky an hour at home after dinner and before bed. It is just not enough when people's lives are at risk. People that I have come to care deeply for. My kingdom for a reading vacation.

minkyb It would be nice to be able to hit pause for life instead of the book! 4y
AlaMich I just downloaded Leviathan Wakes after watching a few episodes of the Expanse. Can't wait!! 4y
RanaElizabeth @AlaMich Careful...I read the first one and then I couldn't stop and have read them all straight through almost. 4y
AlaMich @RanaElizabeth I'd probably have to read them straight thru to keep track of the characters and plot. 4y
RanaElizabeth They are told in lots (like four or five) of POV. Normally I hate that because I can't keep track either. But I have had no problems here. I think partly because I watched the first season so had a real steong sense of what the characters look like but also because each character is strongly realized. The character building is really good. 4y

Frequently when there's a big shift at the end of a book, the following books suffer, but that wasn't the case here. The novel managed to explore parts of the expanded world without losing the things that made this series side enjoyable. I also enjoyed that some of the perspectives were from previous side characters. The interludes from a very different perspective were also really interesting and well written.
