Harry the Dirty Dog
Harry the Dirty Dog | Gene Zion
14 posts | 52 read | 2 to read
There's never been another dog as delightful or dirty as Harry. This lovable white dog with black spots (or black dog with white spots) has charmed children for fifty years, and we are celebrating with an anniversary edition. This childhood favourite is perfect for reading aloud before going to bed or avoiding a bath."

Every once in a while I find it necessary to just filter my library's holdings by 'picture book' and enjoy a selection of the results. Harry the Dirty Dog has the most charming mix of art and story, though for colour Leo the Late Bloomer wins. The Shrinking of Treehorn is actually a pretty sharp critique of adults dismissing children. Who Was That? turned out to be a memory game I did VERY poorly at. 🤦🏼‍♂️ No fair quizzing the adult after work!

Robotswithpersonality The more I think of it, the more Leo needs further consideration from a modern context: Feels like an oversimplification of the possibilities surrounding delayed development and eliminating the potential of neurodivergence - what if there was some help besides just waiting that could have been offered? What if Leo bloomed differently than others and couldn't measure progress by the same reading/drawing etc metrics? 7mo

Harry the Dirty Dog is a MF book about a dog who enjoys getting dirty! Throughout the story, we follow Harry on his journey to playing in dirt. We also see Harry‘s problem solving skills when his family doesn‘t recognise him! A great activity to incorporate is a RA, followed by sequencing the events of the story through seesaw (https://app.seesaw.me/activities/closos/sequence-harry-the-dirty-dog).

OliviaBuck UDL 5.1- use multiple media for communication pairs great with this activity since students are offered an online source to record their voices! This provides students with a different setting, and breaking away from the standard writing activities. EL strategy 16- integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities also goes well with this activity, since students can hear the story being read, and speak rather than write their response 3y

This classic RF story about Harry who is a white dog with black spots, who really doesn‘t like taking baths learns that sometimes getting clean is necessary. This would be a great RA book to read in any classroom. https://www.harpercollins.com/9780060268657/harry-the-dirty-dog/ is a great resource for more information. #UCFLAE3414sp20

Madison_swart UDL principle 7.2 about optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity as well as ELL strategy 11 placing language in meaningful context both can be used with this book. 4y
DrSpalding Are there things that happen in this book that cannot happen in the real world? This could be realistic fiction but I‘m thinking it could also be another genre… Your thoughts? 4y

harry hates baths so much that he is willing to run away from his beloved family for a romp through construction sites and coal chutes until he is no long a white dog. when he finds himself unrecognizable to him loves ones he learns that being clean might not be so bad after all

I decided to be thematically appropriate and wear my Harry shirt while mucking about in ankle deep mud, packing up our booth in Kansas City. At this point I feel dirtier then Harry! 🐶

Andrea4 I have this one too! 6y

Absolute classic about a bath shy white dog who gets so filthy that his family don't recognise him...

Sace I still have my childhood copy of this and No Roses for Harry. I love Harry. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Sace, I love Harry too! I had no idea this was originally published in the 50s... ageless appeal! (Although if a random dog invaded my home, I'm not sure a bath would have been my first thought 😂) 7y

Our trip to the library today was a lucky one! Not only was Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator available, but we arrived in time for the kids to participate in Dog Tales! They chose to read a book about a black and white dog to the black and white dog. 😄 It's a family favorite anyway, but the choice seemed appropriate.

Anyone remember this one? Published in 1956 and still a winner. Betty White will even read it to you via Storyline Online on YouTube. Does this count for my #LetterZ? 🤔 #LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia
