Libraries in the Ancient World
Libraries in the Ancient World | Lionel Casson
12 posts | 8 read | 31 to read
Telling the story of ancient libraries from their very beginnings, when "books" were clay tablets, a renowned classicist takes readers on a lively tour from the royal libraries of the ancient Near East to the private and public libraries of Greece and Rome, down to the first Christian monastic libraries, explaining what books were acquired and how. Illustrations.

Libraries from the beginnings of writing in Mesopotamia down to the time of Isidore of Seville (late 6th/early 7th centuries AD).

Interesting information and yet somehow it feels a bit flimsy.

Lcsmcat Cool! 6y
AmyG That IS pretty cool. 6y
julesG I should watch the news more often. This is just a train ride away. I wonder how they know it's a public library, I'd better read the article to find out. 6y

Bronte_Chintz Wow! That‘s so cool! 😍 6y
Slajaunie Amazing! If I had not had children I would have been an archeologist! 6y
JazzFeathers Wow!!! 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Slajaunie I wanted to be Indiana Jones when I was younger. I'll always kind of regret not following that dream! 6y
TheKidUpstairs @julesG did you read it? It's pretty cool how they figured it out! And the idea that there may have been more public libraries in Roman towns, we just don't know because it's mostly foundations that are found. 6y
Slajaunie @TheKidUpstairs when we retire we can go back to these dreams and live them. 6y
julesG @Slajaunie I also wanted to be Indy. Lara Croft always had too much in her blouse for me. 😝 6y
julesG @TheKidUpstairs I get the cubicle explanation from which they concluded it must be a library. I am not really buying the 'thick walls and middle of town' explanation that supports the *public* library explanation. But (!) I've given Roman history a wide berth at uni, I studied medieval history and mainly history of epidemiology and medicine. So, I'll have to trust the experts, or do some research. 😉 6y

Basically a survey of what it says on the tin. I was a little surprised at how widespread libraries are thought to have been in the Roman Empire.

#BookNBrunch! #Punxsutawney edition! Accompaniment this crisp and clear noon hour was: pancakes, scrambled eggs, corned beef hash, and tea. MMMmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats 😎👌🏻! This was at Punxsy Phil's Cakes & Steaks. And my parents' towing company's ad is in the lower left-hand corner 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!

Apparently #Cocoa likes to be around readers too 😁😻. 6 people in the house and he chose me. (Could be because of my parents' ultra-comfortable chair though. 😆) #dogsofLitsy #ThanksgivingVacation

*wipes a tear* This #LitsyFamily is among the kindest group of folks I've ever come across. After a post office snafu, @BookBabe & I have been humbled to receive a birthday package from a fellow Litten. Heart-felt generosity knows no bounds here. Thank you, Litten, you've really touched our hearts. There aren't enough words to express our thanks. *biiiig hug* These are AMAZING!!! And the chocolate, ohh myy; as Billie Holiday said, "I'm in heaven."

britt_brooke So sweet! 6y

Already behind on #seasonsreadings2016! You'd think, as a librarian, that I'd own more books set in libraries. I've read a bunch, but I guess I've checked them all out? #setinlibrariesbookstores @RealLifeReading

Well, it's not the "ancient world", but our little Grass Valley, CA library is a step back in time, nonetheless. Founded in 1916, and just celebrated its centennial, this jam-packed oasis in our small town has been a constant companion since I first moved to the Sierra Foothills in 2012. #LitsyLovesLibraries
