This was a surprisingly dark and gothic read that's fast paced and full of eerie going ons. Whilst I originally thought this was a ghost story, I was happily surprised when I found out it was more about supernatural creatures. It had a great mystery and I didn't expect the plot twists. The MC Louisa was likeable and I loved the master Mr Morningside. Overall a great start to a spooky trilogy thst I've been hyped to read.

I read my first Madeleine Roux book!

This was actually pretty cool. I enjoyed most of it. I listened to the audiobook to start while I was driving and it's northern Canada and October so naturally it was pitch black and foggy outside which only added to the ambiance.

I'll definitely pick up the next book. It's weird and odd but in a good way and I liked all the characters and the mystery. The ending deal with the Devil has me really curious.

Shley9225 I really liked the cover of this book before they changed it, even though it looked like a graphic novel cover. The new ones are still pretty, but are just like every other cover now :( (edited) 4y

This was pretty good. Squidapus didn't think it was really a horror book so much as a dark fantasy book. While occasionally hitting the same plot point repeatedly ("I have to get out!") it still moved swiftly along. The characters were quirky and fun and the little asides from Morningside's book added to the atmosphere. Can't say that about the two page spreads of photographs tho, Squidapus doesn't think they added much. Great ending as well.

Liked this SO much more than her “Asylum” series ♥️ Gothic atmosphere, period piece, creepy old manor, Irish folklore, and the Devil!!! Also beautifully written with wonderful characters. Will be reading the next of the series for sure.

I enjoyed House of Furies so damn much. It didn‘t go quite where I thought it would (hoped it would?) but it satisfied my insatiable craving for dark, mysterious happenings in big, creepy houses. Highly goth approved.

Michelllllllle... oh my goodness! Thank you SO much for these goodies (I already opened Caramel 😉)!!! I have been wanting to read House of Furies. I'm a huge Madeline Roux fan. The Asylum series was an interesting read. In a good way lol... It was so kind of you to pass this one on. I'm also excited about this month's pick for #CoffeeBeanBookClub. It's one I read several years ago and enjoyed. @MaleficentBookDragon

I was so happy that there wasnt a weird forced romantic subplot. I'm sure the sequel will have one, but at least I dont have to worry about that yet. This was a great book. Creepy as hell, but maybe not downright scary (not to me at least). Loved it.

About halfway through this now. I don't usually read YA (though I do occasionally enjoy middle-grade fiction). In fact, I haven't in years! I just looked up the age of Louisa, the protagonist, and I guess she's 17? Big surprise, she feels much younger to me. Maybe because this book doesn't give her a love interest (at least not yet, halfway through). That's actually what drove me away from YA. Teenagers always seem to want the romantic subplot...

I‘m sad because I love this author and I loved her last series. This just completely fell flat for me. It wasn‘t as creepy as the Asylum series and the suspense wasn‘t there. It was an okay concept, but her other books have been much better.

I loved this book, but it felt very much like a setup for a series, not a complete story. It has its own unique mythology, and the nineteenth century setting is rich in detail. Near the end I wanted more answers, but was left with so many questions. I need the next book! #houseoffuries #review #bookreview

This book was to explore horror genre so I started with something light. It was not what I expected not scary, with one gory unnecessary scene.A teen orphan came to work at Coldthistle House where strange things happen.House owner said that every guest & employee has a purpose to be in the house & everyone has good/dark background.Plot development was slow but I will read the sequel.Maybe I has a purpose to read about Coldthistle House☺️2.5/3⭐️

moranadatter Are you planning to explore further in the genre? 6y
Gissy @moranadatter Yes! I'm currently reading A Head Full of Ghosts. Bird Box is in my tbr because I won the book in a raffle and I just subscribed to Nocturnal Reader Box. I'm still avoiding some topics like zombies and Jason or Freddy Krueger style plots. It doesn't make any sense for me at this time. I like hunted houses topic. Do you like this genre? 6y
moranadatter I do. I tend to stick to ghost stories and thrillers because I tend not to enjoy stories with a lot of violence or gore. I like Cherie Priest and Joe Hill‘s books. 6y
See All 11 Comments
Gissy @moranadatter which one you recommend me to read first from these two authors? 6y
moranadatter My favorite by Cherie Priest is Four and Twenty Blackbirds, but I‘d start with The Family Plot because it‘s a haunted house story. For Joe Hill, I really enjoyed The Fireman because the horror in it was the behavior of people in groups, but it‘s really long. He has a new one called Strange Weather that is 4 novellas. I haven‘t read it yet, but that might a good one to try first to see if you like his writing style. 6y
moranadatter Joe Hill does sometimes go into areas of horror that I don‘t like as much, but I like how his stories focus on how people react to horror rather than the horror itself. 6y
Gissy @moranadatter Thank you! I will add these books in my wish list. I don't like to go out much now after the hurricane. There are still many places without electricity and the traffic is almost impossible. I know is a process but for now I will stay more at home reading of course with my reading lamps since I still don't have electricity with the company of some mosquitoes and with the sweet song of all the generators I have around 😂🤣 6y
moranadatter I can only imagine. I‘m glad you‘re safe and staying positive. Mosquitoes get pretty bad here, but they‘re gone for the year and I‘ve heard they‘re much worse in PR and parts of the South. Now, I‘m fighting with woodpeckers who are trying to destroy my home. They tend to attack in the fall and the spring. 6y
Gissy @moranadatter there is always something no matter where you live😱😱😱😱 6y
moranadatter That‘s so true. I feel really lucky to live where I do. I hope you‘re able to find tons of amazing books to keep you company. 😀 6y

Madeleine Roux is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The perfect combination of creepy, mysterious, and adventure.
Louisa was a fantastic main character, skeptical but curious. The rest of the characters worked so well together to make the book creepy and to keep you guessing.
The story itself was incredibly unique and I can't wait to read the next book!

I'm a little disappointed. This book was visually stunning, and the synopsis sounded really interesting. However, the story fell a little flat. A lot of the 'twists' were predictable and the storyline felt incredibly rushed. I enjoyed the escape from reality, and the dark mythology thrown in. However, I don't think I will get the next book.
