13 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
It is Tib the black cat who leads Mary to the strange flower in the woods. When she discovers a little broomstick there, she is astonished to feel it jump in to action. It takes her to an enchanted, but evil school. There, she discovers evidence of a terrible experiment in transformation - deformed and mutant animals imprisoned in cages.

This was my very first Mary Stewart, at this point I had no idea that she was actually better known for her writing for adults (she is credited for developing the romantic mystery genre) anyway 2018 me was just amused at the chokehold 20th century British women fantasy novelists seem to have on Japanese animated film makers.

Anyway, more books should have chapter heading illustrations!

CarolynM I still want us to buddy read that Mary Stewart novel you sent me. I‘ll get back to you about it soon, I promise. 3mo

So not sure if it counts as a scary movie...but it is a movie about witches and magic so it felt appropriate. Working on reading and finishing an audiobook though. 1 point participation (or 2 if I get to count it as “scary” lol). #TeamStoker #Scarathlon

BeansPage Why two points my dear! Witches ❤️❤️❤️ 5y

Saw Mary and the Witch‘s Flower tonight at a special screening. It‘s based on the tagged book. Had never heard of the author but now I‘m adding some of her books to my #tbr.

398.2 How was it? 6y
hike.read.repeat @398.2 I liked it. It is not a Studio Ghibli movie but I would compare it to those movies. 6y

Mary and the Witch‘s Flower is an anime film based on The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart. I saw it at the movie theater last summer and I‘ve been reading the junior novel for #languagelearning recently. See the English subtitled version if you have a chance!

Pickpick

A simple but rather sweet magical adventure for Mary Smith on what seems to be shaping up as rather a drab holiday. I‘d have liked a bit more of a look at the magical system (odious as it seems to have been) but that‘s not a deal breaker. I‘m looking forward to seeing the movie version soon, retitled to Mary and the Witch‘s Flower.

jamie_in_the_library I just saw the movie last night - I loved it! Now I want to read the book :) 6y
rubyslippersreads I ❤️ the book (a recommendation from @LeahBergen ); can't wait to see the movie! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @jamie_in_the_library, good to hear! I‘m so pleased that movies are still being made in the old animation way - I hope to see it next week. 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @rubyslippersreads, I‘d never heard of it. Someone mentioned that the movie was based on an ‘old English kids book‘ so I had to investigate- I was pleasantly surprised that the library had it. 6y

#FunFridayPhoto These two middle-grade reads were big favourites of mine as a kid. The Wicked, Wicked Ladies scared the hell out of me. 😂 #SpookyOctober

rubyslippersreads I've read The Wicked Ladies, but have never heard of the Mary Stewart one. 8y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I know. It is a bit obscure; Mary Stewart is more famous for her Merlin trilogy now, which begins with The Crystal Cave. 8y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I love Mary Stewart--the Merlin books and her romantic suspense. I found The Little Broomstick on eBay after I saw your post. 😄 #litsymademedoit #blameitonlitsy 8y
