The Parasol Protectorate: Soulless, Blameless, and Changeless
The Parasol Protectorate: Soulless, Blameless, and Changeless | Gail Carriger
10 posts | 19 read | 6 to read
Book 1: SOULLESSAlexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?SOULLESS is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.Book 2: CHANGELESSAlexia Tarabotti, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears - leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria. But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can.She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.Book 3: BLAMELESSQuitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season.Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London's vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead. While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires -- and they're armed with pesto.

I forgot to take a picture of this book. It‘s a pick - BUT I would have enjoyed it more without the sex scenes. I probably won‘t read on - I prefer the Curtsies and Conspiracies books she has written.

Saw @Mandigolightly & @kaye posts. Wanted to introduce myself to new Littens as well. Mine is my Parasol Protectorate name as per author Gail Carriger: Your Most Frivolous Piece of Clothing + Your Favorite Food = Parasol Protectorate Name. Crinoline makes a simple dress fancy. Laphroaig because my favorite food changes with the seasons but my LOVE of Laphroaig whisky always remains. 🙋‍♀️

It‘s quite possible I have an #unpopularopinion about this series. After reading books one and two, I may abandon Alexia. I enjoy the supernatural steampunk vibe, and like the characters. But Carriger‘s writing style leaves me cold. Or perhaps it‘s her plot structure—or both. At 400 pages, Changeless didn‘t grab me until nearly 300 pages in. And by then, I just wanted it to be over. Le sigh.

Richryan52 Nice review! 6y
LibrarianRyan Hey that happens. For me I like her teen series more. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan It happens. Not every book is for every person. 6y

benchley1 I didnt like book 3 either, but ended up looking 4 and 5. I dont recall why, but I had to get 3 on audio to get through it 6y
2BR02B I somehow muddled through this entire series, despite not giving any of the books higher than a three star rating. I think I was just charmed enough by the exceedingly British narrator to persist. 6y
Zelma I bailed on book 1. Not my thing at all. 6y
batsy I couldn't continue after book 1 because I really dislike her writing 😬 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Richryan52 Thank you so much! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LibrarianRyan I‘m not likely to feel that way, since YA isn‘t my thing. 😜 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @jpmcwisemorgan I definitely agree there. Not feeling bad about my choice either! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @benchley1 I looked around for these books on audio—where I didn‘t have to pay for them. Couldn‘t find the 3rd one, so there you go. It‘s gone to the donate pile. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @2BR02B Isn‘t it sad to feel that way? I consider a three-star to be a good book, but I‘m always hoping for a great or exceptional book. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Zelma @batsy At least I know I‘m not alone! 👏🏻👏🏻 6y

Such a light and enjoyable series! I sped through all five books and really found myself warmly chuckling at the world. I loved the presence queer characters that felt rooted in the universe. These books were a perfect distraction from stress and any grumps. I don‘t however recommend the audio books: the writing style feels very slow when read aloud, and I really disliked the performance of Madame Lefoux‘s voice, made it hard to listen to. 🇬🇧☕️

Crewgurl Oh good! I loved the first one. I‘m glad the series continues on a good note! 6y
Jesstifies @Crewgurl I‘d stick with it! If you enjoyed the first one there is more to enjoy throughout for sure 6y

#blameitonlitsy I've read everything Gail Carriger. Her #paraverse is amazing. I can't imagine being clever enough to invent #awholenewworld @RealLifeReading
Genevieve Lefoux is my favorite character. Smart and Funny and has a way with a double entendre. 😘 #jubilantjuly

RealLifeReading I should go try her books again. I did read the first two in the Parasol Protectorate when they first came out then never continued with it (prob because I'm terrible at finishing series!). Will have to try again! 7y

@RealLifeReading My February #tbr is all about Alexia Terabotti. She's definitely #fiestyfeb. In keeping with Scottish theme, in print I have 2nd Inspector Ian Rutledge and travel book Whisky, Kilts, and the Loch Ness Monster. #whiskyandbookbythefire

GypsyKat These are all on my TBR list! Happy reading! 👍🏼 7y
DebinHawaii I love this series & the others! 👍😀 7y

This series is amazing!! Fell in love with the work of @GailCarriger fan girl for life! No surprise that all of her work has 100% pick rating.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa If you like audiobooks, these are pretty great on audio too! 8y
BookwormBeth I don't generally listen to audio but I can definitely see how these would be worth it 😀 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookwormBeth I was lucky enough my library had them, and they were very entertaining on my morning drive and excellently narrated. 8y
BookwormBeth It would be perfect for my long work days I listen to podcasts all day anyway so may just try that 8y
