Obsessed.

I‘ve got one more frame / book cover to go…

GondorGirl This is such a neat idea! 6mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @GondorGirl, Thank-you!! I love DWJ covers but often the paperbacks are pretty mangled and I have the new editions so I don‘t really need an extra reading copy… and this way I get to enjoy them daily. (edited) 6mo

I read this series in high school and absolutely loved it. Right now, I'm rereading it with my husband because now that I've introduced him to Diana Wynne Jones, he's obsessed. I loved this book just as much as an adult. There are a few parts that show their age, of course. The conclusion of the 9 girls situation is so characteristic of Diana's writing! 😂 #Fantasy #MultipleWorlds

Larkken ❤️ Diana Wynne Jones!! 13mo

I knew I shouldn't have started this last night... it's really really good. She IS the original queen of magic. The characters make this - Cat, a young boy with no magical powers and his powerful and overpowering older sister Gwendolen; meet Chrestomanci, powerful and calm enchanter and his family- his kind and gentle wife and his smart children. Can Cat do anything to save his sister (from herself?!). I've ordered the sequel. Highly recommend.

I've accidentally started reading yet another book, even though I have a few on the go. I quite like different books for different moods and just fancied this Diana Wynne Jones from my TBRs. Anyone read it?

I enjoy a magical middle grade so who better than the original queen of the genre... One of my favourite Ghibli films to re-watch when I need a pick me up is her 'Howl's Moving Castle', although that's a rare case of preferring film to book!

elkeOriginal LOVE DWJ! Howl is an awesome book too. She IS queen and always a fun reread. 1y
Bibliomania @elkeOriginal I loved this so much I've ordered myself books 2 and 3 in the Chrestomanci series :) :). Howl I enjoyed but I LOVED the Ghibli film (which I watched after reading the book) even more than the book - Sophie is just perfect and although it's not completely faithful to the book Miyazaki captures the essence of it perfectly. DWJ loved the film apparently! Have you seen it? 1y
elkeOriginal @Bibliomania I consider the book & movie both good but separate because so different 💕 Chrestomanci is also a delight in every book! 1y
Bibliomania I can't wait to read them all!!! 😊 1y

The writing was engaging but I really hated Gwendolyn, so that made it hard to get through. The plot really only grabbed me just before the very end when it all came together too quickly.

SayersLover Gwendolyn is annoying, but try “The Lives of Christophe Chant” you might like it better. 1y

Even though it took me some time to get into the first book of the series, I really liked Charmed Life. It definitely seems like a good start into series because the end keeps you wanting to get to know more.

Vansa What a beautiful cover. 2y

I‘ve had the whole series in my library for some time now. So I started it finally. I always like it very much if chapters show a nice small picture at their beginning. Somehow makes a book even more interesting.

This was cute and fun with an interesting world in which magic exists. The story centers around Cat who with his sister Gwendolen are orphaned and come to live with a mysterious figure known as Chrestomanci.

DWJ has had some fairly hideous covers but these are so beautiful! It took me awhile to locate them all on my shelves (because I didn‘t remember all the colours 🌈)

Do you have a favourite?

SayersLover These are beautiful! Its about time, Jones' Chestomanci series deserves better treatment. Of these covers, I'd say Witch Week is my favorite one. Favorite book overall regardless of covers is definitely The Lives of Christopher Chant! 4y

I've been slowly reading Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci series. Still have three books to go. Unlike other series I've read, the connection between volumes can be very loose, each one introducing new characters and locations. Each book has a riveting magical adventure while adding depth to a larger over-arching narrative. #20series20days @Andrew65

“Well, I was coming in to say good morning,” Chrestomanci said. “But I see that it isn‘t.” He looked from the jug to Julia‘s marmalade-glistening cheeks. “If you two ever want to eat marmalade again,” he said, “you‘d better do as you‘re told.”

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @RachelO, I‘d behave! Marmalade reminds me of the breakfast at my grandparents 🤩 (disclaimer: I sometimes still just show up at their house at breakfast time for marmalade toast) 5y

Howl‘s Moving Castle is one of my favorites, so I thought I‘d dip into a little more Diana Wynne Jones. This was a quick read and very enjoyable. A nice mix of magic and interesting characters and mystery.

What a delightful listen! The first book in the Chrestomanci series about Cat Chant and his life amid magical beings.
Wynne Jones's influence on J.K. Rowling is very evident in this book. There is a he-who-must-not-be-named and a general concern for maintaining balance between people with and without magical powers. I prefer Jones's writing, though. 😬 She goes in unexpected directions and builds intricate worlds and charcters.

batsy I haven't read this one yet, but I agree with you on Jones's writing (vs Rowling 😬) 7y
merelybookish @batsy This is the 4th book I've read by her. I really appreciate the level of depth there is to her books. And I don't even like fantasy that much! 7y

From my IG: Diana Wynne Jones reading #bucketlist. Since an old-fashioned matchbook is a plot point in Charmed Life, the first novel in the Chronicles of Chrestomanci, I illustrated that #bookseries with same. I had fun creating smoked cardboard using a light touch on my eraser. 📚Series: #chrestomanci, #howlsmovingcastle, #magids, #derkholm, #dalemark.

This story is about a mysterious man named Chrestomanci, a boy with a magical sister, and a mysterious garden. It's a quick read and oh so much fun. Also, this cover is making me feel 😍.

This is the best entrance into DWJ's Chrestomanci series. It pulls you in while also setting up the worlds of Chres and the magical rules. Whether you love or hate her Howl books, give this a go! While technically for younger readers, I still enjoy returning and rereading when I miss DWJ...
