I brought a huge stack with me for a long weekend in Jersey 🤣 I finished Taste tonight, and I‘m partway through the tagged book, plus Beyond the Wand. I gave a few good options, plus three ARCs I need to read in the next two weeks 🤣 #booknerdproblems

I‘m traveling today for my daughter‘s baby shower, and I don‘t want to forget to post again!! Not posting daily is really throwing me off!

Part 3: whoa #backtoAasnarrator #sheisinthornfield #gracepoole #Adreamsthereisafire 🔥#hashtagbrigade

Librarybelle The dream was interesting. It was a nice tie-in to Jane Eyre and how the fire started. I did like that connection. 3d
See All 22 Comments
Bookwormjillk Is that a picture of aka Bertha or me reading this book? Congrats to your daughter! 3d
IndoorDame I really like that it ends at Thornfield bc I think tying it back to JE so concretely, and starting the fire with a dream were great choices. But I thought the writing in this section was the weakest, and I‘m itching to reread JE now, and I‘m guessing if I do that feeling will only get stronger. 3d
IndoorDame Also terrifying photo! England is clearly bad for the complexion 😂😂😂 3d
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk @indoordame 🤣🤣 I was trying to find Bertha in the red dress, but the pics were too blurry 🙄 3d
Aimeesue This section was so well done. The depiction of disordered thinking in someone with mental health issues was brilliant. 3d
5feet.of.fury I liked the ending, but it seemed like a big jump from part 2 to tie everything up 3d
Clare-Dragonfly I do have a theory about why Richard was so eager to marry her off after part 3: he was afraid she would marry Sandi, since they were apparently into each other. And he was Black, so obviously that wouldn‘t do. I still don‘t understand why she agreed to marry Rochester though 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d
dabbe @Librarybelle The color red, too. Reminded me of the red room in JE. 3d
dabbe @IndoorDame 😂😂😂 3d
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly EXCELLENT thought that makes total sense in a book where stream of consciousness is everywhere! 👏 👏 👏 3d
willaful I feel like the book was almost in code. I was missing something I needed to really get it, background or knowledge or a different frame of mind. It was truly heartbreaking nonetheless. 2d
mcctrish @willaful same! I feel like I almost get it but not quite maybe I need to reread Jane Eyre 2d
julieclair @Aimeesue I agree about the depiction of disordered thinking. Her decisions seemed so “logical” if you assume her thoughts were “rational”. And to her, they were. 2d
julieclair I do wonder what would have happened if Rochester had really loved her and treated her as a cherished wife. Would she still have gone mad? 2d
julieclair @BarkingMadRead How wonderful about the baby shower! 2d
rubyslippersreads @dabbe @Librarybelle I thought of that too. 14h

Aimeesue The Bertha thing is so creepy. NO ONE likes the name Bertha as a lovely and mellifluous name. Liar. (edited) 6d
BarkingMadRead @Aimeesue it is 💯 messed up. So gross and super passive aggressive 6d
Aimeesue @BarkingMadRead so controlling. Red flag! Red flag! 🚩 Sigh. Too late. 6d
Bookwormjillk I keep confusing Rochester with Max DeWinter. We keep reading about these messed up men who believe themselves to be victims. 6d
Librarybelle I was so confused when the narration kept changing. Admittedly, this one is a bit of a struggle for me…I feel like I‘ve not found a good rhythm yet with the writing, and we‘re near the end! 6d
mcctrish @Librarybelle I keep wondering if I‘m the crazy one because WTF is happening 6d
5feet.of.fury The Bertha thing, separating her from Christophine… husband is a creep. Wish the zombi got him 6d
mcctrish @Aimeesue Bertha is brutal 6d
5feet.of.fury @Librarybelle yeah, I do not get this one. I read through 2 pages & had no idea whose POV or what had happened. 6d
Librarybelle Glad I‘m not the only one, @mcctrish @5feet.of.fury 6d
IndoorDame @Bookwormjillk This actually does remind me a bit of Rebecca in the sense that all of the characters are unreliable, but there‘s still something about all of them that draws you into their worlds when they‘re the ones talking, and the whole place is intoxicating and bordering on fantastical. 6d
willaful I continue to have no memory at all of having read this.

I'm furious and disgusted with Rochester. He's totally yellow-wallpapering Antoinette.
6d
Clare-Dragonfly I still don‘t get why Richard wanted Antoinette to marry Rochester so badly. She had plenty of money, she could have lived independently! @IndoorDame Yes, I was also reminded of Rebecca, and you‘ve articulated why very well! 6d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if he just didn‘t want to feel responsible for her anymore? She would have been fine by herself, I don‘t know why he felt the need to marry her off 6d
julieclair I am so disappointed in Rochester. He used to be one of my book boyfriends, but now he‘s off the list! 6d
TheBookHippie Sorry I bailed. Too much life going on to read this darkness. 😵‍💫 5d

Librarybelle Quite a lot to digest in Part 1! 2w
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle I‘m thinking part two might need multiple posts 🤣 that was a lot (edited) 2w
Librarybelle 😂 2w
Bookwormjillk I read this not knowing what was a dream and what was real. I‘ve bailed on this book in the past, but I am determined to finish with the #HashtagBrigade 2w
5feet.of.fury Poor Coco. I‘m glad Aunt Cora is coming back. I‘m so confused with the Mason/Cosway family tree. 2w
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle it was a lot! @Bookwormjillk I know that I read this in high school, and I remember that whole 1st part, and being confused about the races/race relations & our teacher thinking we were all very stupid. Which if she‘s the teacher, teaching us & we all did not understand I think that‘s a her problem lol 2w
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury definitely a her problem! 2w
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury Mason is Antoinette‘s stepdad, but I didn‘t like her saying nee Cosway, because I always thought that was for marriage 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I found this quick to read but difficult to follow. If the present-tense portion near the end was a dream, were the other present-tense portions dreams? But I don‘t remember what they were anymore. I guess I‘m following the broad strokes of Antoinette‘s life, though. 2w
dabbe Rhys writes as if she expects us to know and understand all about British and French colonialism in the Caribbean and the so-called pecking order determined by how much black blood was in you. I admit to having read some study guides for this one, and it helped tremendously. I think the strange man at the end of Part 1 (that Mason alludes to) is Rochester. #oytothevey! 😳 (edited) 2w
willaful @BarkingMadRead Maybe it's one of those usages that changed? Like in Austen and other books of the time, “stepmother“ and “mother-in-law“ often seem to be switched, IIRC.

@dabbe Yes, it's frustrating! I'm confused too -- and have NO memory of having read this before, though I know I did. Too young no doubt.
2w
mcctrish I forgot what day we were meeting 🤦🏻‍♀️ this first part felt ripe with ominous vibes and while I get the white negro and black Englishman taunts I hadn‘t realized how angry they were ( although Tia not coming back with the stolen dress should have clued me in) poor Patrick ( and horse and parrot) what in earth will part 2 bring 😳 this is a wild fast ride. The mom was a piece of work but her yelling “no “ when Antoinette went to visit 💔 2w
mcctrish I am curious what was the matter with Patrick ( some kind of palsy ?) and Antoinette was ill for 6 weeks not from being hit in the head from a stone ( thx Tia) but because her mother tried to kill her?! 2w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish yeah that whole part of her being sick kind of went over my head. Really crazy 2w
Bookwormjillk @5feet.of.fury a her problem for sure! 2w
rubyslippersreads Not only is Part One full of drama and tragedy, I feel like what happens in Jane Eyre is hanging over everything. #PoorCoco #foreshadowing #impendingdoom (edited) 2w

BookwormAHN I enjoyed this one but I thought it ended rather quickly and could of used another chapter or two. 3w
5feet.of.fury I did not like this one, plotwise was ok -but seemed like 1/2 an idea to me -although many of his you never get a “why & how” and it‘s more about the characters react to the situation, which is very true here and the characters I thought were good except that I think the language/tone was wrong for the age / time period of the MC. Just in general the silly stuff he says. 3w

5feet.of.fury Also why the gross creepy incest ending that adds nothing to the story or plot in any way? 3w
BarkingMadRead @bookwormahn @5feet.of.fury 💯 agree, the incest seemed like a weird and unnecessary afterthought and the story itself could have been so much more! 3w
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead I was yelling “Ewww whyyyy Stephen” immediately tanked the book for me, I wasn‘t super impressed with this one anyway & that was ridiculous. &so pointless 3w

Bookwormjillk I don‘t remember the ending being so abrupt. But maybe that‘s because I go back and re-read the beginning every time. Anyway I don‘t know if I‘d be so quick to take my husband‘s word that he murdered his first wife, but only because she was mean. Still a good read though. 3w
See All 29 Comments
Roary47 Thank you for including me. It‘s been fun reading with everyone. 😊 3w
5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk right? It seemed like he had it well planned out, except for the sailing. He exploited the power dynamic enough in his relationship with the narrator that I can‘t fully trust his word. Only showing affection towards Jan once he confesses (seems to me to manipulate her loyalty), saying he likes how naive & innocent she is etc… 3w
TheAromaofBooks I'm with @Bookwormjillk - I'd forgotten how suddenly the ending comes. I actually feel like there are a lot of things between this and them living abroad as they are in chapter 1 that I would be interested to hear about haha 3w
peanutnine What an ending! 🤯 I kinda do wanna go back and reread the first chapter now with context 3w
Clare-Dragonfly What a wild ending, yet inevitable. I do hope all the inhabitants got out okay. 3w
ElizaMarie Ooo! 3w
Ruthiella So did Jasper and the mama dog survive and do they now live happily with Frank who still manages the farms etc. ? I like to think yes. 3w
julieclair What an ending! But perfect. Rebecca‘s minions have the last word. I loved this book! It was fun reading it with all of you. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I know Jasper did, not sure about mama? 3w
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury I think the "naive and innocent" bit from Maxim is in comparison to Rebecca. What a horror show she was! 3w
dabbe Since the title really does say it all, Rebecca remains the dominant force throughout the whole novel. She is omni-present, and I do think she wanted Max to kill her, hoping to pin the murder on him or at least have Favell and/or Danny exact vengeance ... which is exactly what Danny appears to have done by burning Manderley to the ground. Rebecca wins in the end. Jan ends up exactly where she started, a “paid“ escort to a traveling elder. Wowza. 3w
KAO I really enjoyed reading this (and admit to finishing the book a bit early)! The 1940 Alfred Hitchcock movie (on YouTube) is quite good and follows the book rather closely. Then I found the 2020 remake on Netflix and was really perplexed by so many changes and different takes on characters—awfully disappointing in my opinion. I found the book to be better than either film—as is usually the case! Thanks again for leading the group read! (edited) 3w
willaful @KAO Hmm, think I won't watch the remake.

One big change of the 1940 movie, IIRC, is they made Rebecca's death more accidental. Interesting, that. It probably helped with the romanticizing of the novel. (Which I theorize led to Du Maurier writing My Cousin Rachel.)

@dabbe wow, excellent point! I never thought of that. At least she has job security now. 😂

3w
dabbe @willaful You are absolutely correct! I think they did that also because of the film taboos back then; you can't murder your wife and not have justice done to you, but if we make it an accident ...

Job security indeed! 🤩😂🤗
3w
willaful I'm also seeing some parallels with We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which I don't want to elaborate on too much because of spoilers. But some plot and some psychological elements. 3w
willaful @dabbe Yes, come to think of it I think that was actually in the Hayes code. Badness could not go unpunished. 3w
5feet.of.fury @Aimeesue I know I should feel that way, but I‘m so suspicious of him. Were they so toxic because he couldn‘t influence Rebecca? He‘s somewhat of a horror show himself, or was he just addled with being back & was terrible to the narrator? There‘s a lot to ponder there. 3w
5feet.of.fury I support women‘s wrongs. Justice for Rebecca. 3w
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury It‘s not that he couldn‘t influence her - she reneged on their weird deal that she could do as she pleased in London or elsewhere, but Manderley was sacrosanct. And then kept on and on doing it. Neither of them were psychologically healthy, to put it mildly, but they are of their time in the roles/performance they were putting on. Then she manipulated him into killing her, because cancer + revenge via the guilt it would cause. 3w
5feet.of.fury @Aimeesue Oh yes, I agree with that! I just think that he set out looking for someone he could easily control for his 2nd wife 3w
Aimeesue Which absolutely worked, because, well, the entire book. Du Maurier does a great job of strewing the book with ambiguities - Maxim‘s pacing after R‘s death, bystanders‘ feelings about R, related to Jan, everyone‘s unwillingness to talk about R., with the exception of ol‘ Danny, who uses it to make Jan doubt herself. 3w
Aimeesue @5feet.of.fury Or just someone who was the complete opposite of Rebecca? She must have been exhausting! Games, games, games. 3w
Aimeesue @willaful Agree about We Have Always Lived, AND 3w
willaful @peanutnine Even though I've read it many times, I still went back and reread the beginning. I feel like I have a new take on it this time. 3w
kwmg40 Thanks for leading the group read! I really enjoyed this reread of Rebecca and all the commentary. 3w

Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking of I Love Lucy too! 😂 3w
TheAromaofBooks So was Rebecca's intent to GOAD Maxim into murdering her ON PURPOSE??? Also, side note, I'm just not sure what I would do if my husband confessed to killing his first wife, no matter how terrible she was. I'm not confident I would be as “obviously I love you and will stay with you“ as our narrator is! 😂 3w
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I would have trouble with that too! 3w
kwmg40 The doctor offered them cigarettes and sherry! What doctor would do that these days? It was a different time! 3w
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks yeah, I don‘t think that would have the same effect on me as it had on Jan. 3w
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks yeah it seemed like Rebecca's way of taking him down with her, not realizing he would get away with it 3w
peanutnine The narrator is so desperate to be loved that she'll overlook some HUGE red flags. She's so worried about what others think of her, she can't imagine leaving him even for a good reason 3w
IndoorDame Totally agree about both of them! If Rebecca wants to off herself, go for it, but suicide by proxy totally makes her an #evilbitch And Jan staying with her husband who‘s perfect except for the whole I‘m a murderer thing is just nuts, like I‘m worried the girl has no basic self preservational instincts! 3w
5feet.of.fury I was so surprised by the doctor‘s report. What the heck? But, it gives everyone a good reason to believe the suicide… 3w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Yes to everything you said! Rebecca is evil and Jan is not a great decision-maker. 😂 3w

Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this pic. Does Danny think Rebecca was only in love with her? So many questions. 4w
julieclair I felt so very sorry for Ben. And yes, I do think Baker is a doctor and she really was pregnant. 4w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I couldn't help myself I binged to the end. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig I did that days ago 🤣🤣🤣 4w
willaful I was really struck by the narrator's use of “sensual“ to describe Jack, in a completely negative way. Her fastidiousness seems pathological. A murderer is fine, as long as he's refined. (edited) 4w
Aimeesue Sometimes I just want to slap Jack. Or punch him in the neck. Grrrrr. Poor Ben. He did just what Rebecca wanted, though, didn‘t he? (edited) 4w
Clare-Dragonfly Poor Ben! My Danny in the cottage theory is definitely busted 😂 I appreciate the irony that it‘s Rebecca‘s own threat that is making it difficult for Favell to prove her murder. (edited) 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair Agreed. Most likely pregnant with Jack‘s child, or at least she believed it was his. 4w

IndoorDame I‘ve been dying for her to snap out of it and act like this with Mrs. D. but did it really take a murder to get her there?! Jan‘s perspective is all out of whack! 4w
ElizaMarie "I'm afraid it does not concern me very much what Mrs. de Winter used to do," I said. "I am Mrs. de Winter now, you know.” —— ?? 4w
Clare-Dragonfly So this is what it takes to get Jan to grow a backbone! I know it‘s not really the murder, it‘s the belief that Maxim didn‘t love Rebecca. Her priorities are all out of whack. I wonder what exactly Frank knows, and why he is protecting Maxim. 4w
Bookwormjillk Life according to the Colonel: Murder ok poetry bad. This is why rich people get away with crimes. 4w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly , I feel like Frank knows pretty much everything. I mean, maybe not the threat of the heir, but Max did it. The secret is safe with Frank, who knows Rebecca's type, her evil, manipulative ways. If he could look the other way as long as he did (unless he just figured it out), he has no plans of coming clean. 4w
5feet.of.fury Also Maxim‘s obsession with Jan looking young and naive is so icky 4w
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly Especially since Rebecca seems to have had a fling with him as well. Maybe he's in love with Rebecca. That would make things even more interesting. 🧐 4w
willaful @5feet.of.fury Yes. He's never going to allow her to truly mature. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @willaful @5feet.of.fury - I definitely think it's a strong reaction to how horrible his life was with Rebecca who was “worldly,“ a serial cheater, into drugs, etc. His response seems to have been to find someone as “innocent“ as possible and his fear is that as she learns more of the world she'll become another Rebecca. I think his hellish time with Rebecca has left him unable to see that genuine maturity between two reasonable people leads to ⬇ 4w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a working partnership that benefits both people. His experience with women seems to be on a “knows nothing“ to “loves to do drugs, sleep around, and rub it in her husband's face“ scale, so while the whole “she needs to stay innocent“ thing does come off kind of creepy, I think he believes he's protecting both himself and the narrator, rather than holding her back. 4w
5feet.of.fury @TheAromaofBooks I can see what you are saying, makes sense. although we are just taking Max‘s word that Rebecca was all these horrible things… I‘m not sure what to believe from him. If he‘s just told this story now that the murder is out. 4w
Roary47 @5feet.of.fury Right?! I like your thoughts @TheAromaofBooks in him choosing her innocence because it is the opposite of Rebecca. I want to think the best of Max, but he has baggage. He should not have jumped into his relationship with Jan, but here we are. 4w
willaful @5feet.of.fury There are some other indications, like her apparent treatment of Ben, and her moves on Frank -- but there too, there's no real evidence is there? 4w
5feet.of.fury @willaful that‘s true, Frank does strike me as reliable, no hidden agenda towards Jan 4w
willaful @5feet.of.fury I trust him, but if someone wanted to write an “other side of the story“ for Rebecca, they'd have some plausible deniability. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @5feet.of.fury - Oooo great point! I guess I am just taking Maxim at face value because the narrator is. But she hasn't actually proven to be a particularly reliable judge of character so far. 4w

Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I lose any sympathy I had for Jan. It doesn't matter Max is a murderer, what's important is HE DIDN'T LOVE REBECCA! She becomes a bit like Rebecca in that she doesn't care about anything except what she wants. I could see her going over the edge in later years and murderibg Max because she thinks he doesn't love her enough. 1mo
See All 18 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig that‘s a really good point, it shows just how much she hasn‘t grown up! 1mo
julieclair Whoa! Didn‘t see that one coming! And Jan… she‘s a woman obsessed… it‘s like the knowledge that Max didn‘t love Rebecca is pulling her back from tipping over the edge of madness. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Augh… I was afraid she was going to try to protect him. I hope she fails. Will they find the bullet in the ship? It must be somewhere, so it‘s either in her body or in the cottage. But her body has decomposed (I think the cop said it was skeletal), so the bullet could have fallen somewhere they can‘t find it… (edited) 1mo
5feet.of.fury Yeah this is wild, she gets on board with the cover up wayyyy too quickly 1mo
IndoorDame How is having someone else‘s baby the one thing about living with her that tips it over the edge!!!!??? That would seriously NOT be my biggest problem if she were my wife! 1mo
ElizaMarie I had thought Rebecca was a cheater when they talked about these long nights in the cottage. Am I the only one that‘s okay with murder!? Ha. I mean. Not to say murder is super okay, but she did back him into a corner. And —- she was evil and… you are “allowed” to kill the antichrist. Right!? #NoItsJustMe 1mo
Roary47 @IndoorDame I agree, why is this the straw for him. I‘m thinking it was the delivery. @ElizaMarie I‘m with you. More a take down would have been more preferred, but your right he was backed into a corner with pure evil. If he wasn‘t backed into a corner I see that he could have showed her true colors. Exposed her infidelity. Something. 1mo
Ruthiella All I can say is keep reading folks! I have my own ideas about Rebecca‘s motivations. I also noted Jan‘s primary focus now of being truly loved and I think I would have had the same blind obsession at 21 or 22. (edited) 1mo
ElizaMarie @Roary47 Yes. like the question: “Would you go back in time and kill baby Hitler?“ I am guessing, yes.

But I agree. If she wasn't so cocky with her evilness. I am sure Max would have had no choice but to get divorced from her eventually. But, she was slipping up so much, it was going to all come out what type of person she was eventually.
1mo
Bookwormjillk This is my 3rd time reading and for some reason I remembered this as the end of the book, but we still have a ways to go. So hard to stop today. 1mo
willaful @IndoorDame It's because the baby would inherit Manderley. It's all about the property. 1mo
willaful @ElizaMarie That seemed implausible to me too. I'm sure Max could've found evidence 1mo
dabbe @Ruthiella Rebecca truly egged him on; it seemed as if she wanted to get as big a rise out of him as she could. As you so eloquently said, #keepreadingfolks! 🤩 1mo
dabbe @willaful Agree 💯. Maxim loves Manderley more than anyone--even the narrator. His de Winter pride is at stake. 1mo

IndoorDame @TheAromaofBooks same!!! This scene never gets any less horrifying or unexpected! Really any of the scenes with Mrs. D. ! 1mo
TheBookHippie I‘ve no recollection of being this creepy although it‘s been a long time since I read it, but yikes. 1mo
daena The fact that Danvers lays it all out there with zero shame and a whole lot of obsessive crazy makes it that much more terrifying. It's like she has nothing left to lose because she's already lost Rebecca. 1mo
dabbe I remembered this scene because of the movie. If you‘ve never seen the 40s version, you should. The pic posted by @BarkingMadRead says it all. It won best picture in 1940, and Olivier, Fontaine, and Anderson (as Danvers) were all nominated for their acting roles. Judith Anderson is absolutely chilling as Danvers. 😱 1mo

Aimeesue @dabbe whoohoo! Thanks for the link! 1mo
dabbe @Aimeesue 😘 1mo
dabbe To me, this feels like the climatic chapter, where the narrator is at her lowest point. Even though she starts of facing Danny, Danvers overwhelms her with her #rebeccarebeccarebecca crap, and Jan descends into darkness, even ready to jump and commit suicide. Then, BAM! A deus ex machina to break the trance of Rebecca with the explosion going off. If that hadn't happened, Jan would have jumped. But of course, there's more to the story ... 🤩 1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Roary47 I read ahead to because tomorrow and the weekend is busy. It's definitely 😲 moment. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe Ooh, thanks! I saved it to watch later—I don‘t want any spoilers! This chapter was sooooo creepy 😱 1mo
KAO @dabbe Thank you for the link to the film! Saving it for after I have finished the book! This is my first time to read Rebecca, so it‘s all new to me—and delightfully creepy at times. 1mo
julieclair This chapter was sooooo creepy, and so well written! DuMaurier was a master! Thanks for the link to the movie @dabbe. I have never seen it and totally want to watch it once we‘ve finished the book. 1mo
