A low pick. A bit slow at times, but has loads of interesting facts about sheep. The author provides many historical details related to the raising of sheep for food and wool, and discusses environmental and political issues that are relevant today.

Still catching up with reviews from the past weeks. I really enjoyed rereading this book, one of my favourites, with commentary from @BarkingMadRun and the #HashTagBrigade.

I also rewatched the classic Hitchcock adaptation recently and it was interesting comparing the book and movie.

I really enjoyed this story and loved the characters. I told my daughter, “When your Dad and I can't live independently anymore, can you find me a luxury senior's home where the residents solve mysteries and drink lots of wine?“

#AwesomeApril @Andrew65
#gottacatchemall @PuddleJumper (prompt 47: Polteageist, Cosy mystery)

kwmg40 I'm using this for prompt 25 (An author “everyone“ has read except you) of #52bookclub because almost everyone I know has recommended this book to me.

One recommendation was from my daughter's friend. I asked, “Why would young people be interested in a series featuring senior citizens?“ His reply; “I like to think that, when I'm that old, my life would be just as interesting as those of the characters,“ which I thought was lovely!

A low pick for me. The story was so-so but I liked the 18th-century London setting of this historical mystery and its references to real-life characters.

I'm using this for prompt 2 (Bibliosmia: A smelly book) of #52bookclub24. My daughter, who knows I love Penguin green mysteries, found this old musty copy. I'm sure it smells just like the London bookshop where she got it!

I finished this second Laundry Files book because the entire series was nominated for a Hugo award, and I'm working through the nominees. This one is a mix of Lovecraftian horror and James Bond spy thriller. It's a decent story but the humour is not really my cup of tea, so I don't think I'll be continuing the series, at least not for now.

Another good installment in the October Daye series, but I did find one thing disappointing. I was excited that this book was set in Toronto (close to where I live) but almost all the action happened in the hidden faerie realm. The only Toronto references were the overused Tim Hortons jokes. We really do have more than Tim Hortons here in Canada! 😄

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉🎉 2w

Hooked_on_books But Timbits are so good! Especially the chocolate ones. Yum! 2w
kwmg40 @Librarybelle They're not wholly Canadian these days, as there is some foreign ownership, but Tim's was founded in the 1960's by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton, and there's pretty much a Tim's in every Canadian city and town, no matter how small. 2w
Librarybelle Good to know! I think I‘ve seen one near Erie, Pennsylvania but have not visited. 2w
kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books My family had to try the Timbiebs (a collaboration with Justin Bieber) when they came out, but my favourites remain the chocolate glazed and old fashioned. 2w

kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Nice to see appreciation of Tim's elsewhere in the world! My daughter lives in London where a Tim's opened up recently. She said there were long lineups, which seemed weird to us, as Tim's is just the local no-frills coffee shop to us Canadians. 😄 2w

An excellent book describing the science, history and politics surrounding forest fires. Vaillant gives a gripping account of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire in Canada, and explains how climate change has led to an increase of such fires.

willaful @kwmg40 That looks like the place. What a hike it was! We were there in Summer 2019. Oh the humidity!

One of my bookish friends (Miss Bates Reads Romance, if anyone knows her blog) took me on the Leonard Cohen tour while I was there, so I saw it more close up as well. But it's pretty cool, albeit small, from the mountain.
3w
kwmg40 @Octoberwoman Me too! I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. He was gracious and generous to his fans. 3w
kwmg40 @willaful Yes, Montreal can be very uncomfortable in the summer! I was there last summer when it was covered in smog from the wildfires. But it‘s still a great city to visit anytime. I grew up there and much of my family is still there. 3w
kwmg40 @willaful I hadn‘t known about the Leonard Cohen tour. Sounds like it would definitely be a worthwhile activity for a Cohen fan! 3w
willaful @kwmg40 It's just her own personal tour, of places he lived and wrote about. 😁 Very cool for a fan. I saw him in concert once, when I was maybe 9? My mom and aunt were big fans so I grew up loving his music.

Weirdly, I actually kind of enjoyed the humidity. I lived in Manhattan when I was young and I felt at home. My poor daughter was so miserable though! She's never lived anywhere but a mild climate.

2w
kwmg40 @willaful Nice that your friend shared this tour with you! I'm with your daughter -- I hate the humidity. I now live in Southwestern Ontario, where it's also hot and humid in the summer months. 2w

Newitz looks at 4 ancient cities, Çatalhöyük, Pompeii, Angkor, and Cahokia, and examines the details of everyday life in these urban centres, instead of the major events that other historians tend to focus on.

I finished this book yesterday to wrap up the #FabulousFebruary readathon. Thank you for hosting @Andrew65!

Librarybelle On my to read list! 3mo

This book was left behind by one of my daughters when she moved out years ago, and it was the perfect choice for prompt 29 of #52bookclub24: “Published in a Year of the Dragon“. It was published in 1976 and, as the title suggests, it features dragons! I loved the story! Wish I had read it when I was young.

willaful I loved this and the sequel when I was a teen.... 3mo

BarbaraBB A great find indeed! 3mo
TheAromaofBooks This is a great series. 3mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB I was very excited when I saw it was published in 1976! 3mo
kwmg40 @willaful @TheAromaofBooks I‘m definitely going to real more in this series! 3mo
TheAromaofBooks It's a little weird because there is the whole long Pern series, and within that series there are two trilogies, including this one. I liked these three books better when I read them within the context of the longer series, but there are like 20+ in the Pern series, so it's a serious commitment 😂 3mo
PuddleJumper Oh the nostalgia! I devoured them in my teenage years 3mo
Andrew65 Love the look of this. Well done 🎉🎉🎉 3mo
Larkken These were my favorites in the Pern series! (Also, possibly not a coincidence, my first McCaffreys) glad you enjoyed the first one. 3mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks @Larkken I'd read another book in the Pern series several years ago. I did like it, but for some reason, never got back to the series until now. Well, I'm convinced I need to read more from the series! 3mo
kwmg40 @PuddleJumper I'd read a lot of Heinlein in my teenage years and some of them make me cringe now when I reread them, though they're still enjoyable in many ways. I imagine the Pern series stands up better to the test of time! 3mo
kwmg40 @Andrew65 Thanks! 3mo

I found this novel somewhat messy with all its characters and storylines but I did enjoy reading it. It's a heartwarming story set in a 1970's Pennsylvania neighbourhood with primarily Jewish and Black residents.

This is a biography of model and artist Kiki Man Ray, who was married to artist Man Ray for a time. While Kiki's life story was interesting, I enjoyed even more learning about the development of art in Montparnasse during the 1920's.

kwmg40 @BarbaraBB OMG! I chose a cover image from the Internet and didn‘t look at it carefully. 😂 I actually received an English copy from a #BookCrossing friend but sent it to another reader before remembering to take a photo! 3mo

The second book in the Web Shifter's Library series, this SF novel has further adventures of lovable shapeshifter Esen and friends. Biologist Julie Czerneda is great at inventing interesting alien species.

Time for the #FabulousFebruary readathon! @Andrew65

I'm hoping to finish Dragonsong and Four Lost Cities soon.

I'm also hoping to finish or at least start several more books from #LitsyToB24 before voting starts. I'm currently enjoying Biography of X, stalled with Julia, and have on my radar Mobility, Hello Beautiful, and The Rachel Incident. Suggestions on which to try next from the Litsy crew would be appreciated!

Megabooks I enjoyed all three you have on your up next list, but Hello Beautiful was a top pick from me and @squirrelbrain last year, and I think @barbarabb loved it, too! 3mo
kwmg40 @Megabooks Thanks! I‘ve seen a lot of praise for Hello Beautiful. 3mo

BarbaraBB I enjoyed all three of them a lot! Hello Beautiful and The Rachel Incident are easy, fast reads. Mobility asks more concentration I think. 3mo
squirrelbrain Exactly what @BarbaraBB said! 3mo
kwmg40 @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Thanks! I'll keep all of your comments in mind. It sounds like it'll be worthwhile to read all of them. 3mo

Mistress of Mellyn | Victoria Holt

I've always been a fan of Jean Plaidy's historical novels but I've not read many that she authored as Victoria Holt. I really enjoyed this gothic romance and murder mystery, even if it did seem to borrow a lot of elements from Jane Eyre and Rebecca.

Crazeedi I've read many Victoria Holt books, never knew written by Plaidy! And I don't think I read this one!! 3mo

kwmg40 @Librarybelle I suppose many of the gothic romance writers of the 20th century were inspired by Jane Eyre! 3mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for stopping by! 3mo
kwmg40 @Crazeedi Apparently, Eleanor Alice Burford, a.k.a. Jean Plaidy, wrote under several pseudonyms! I'm familiar with only the Plaidy and Holt ones. 3mo
Librarybelle Probably! Jane Eyre is a good book! 3mo

I'm continuing to enjoy #NancyDrewBR hosted by @Librarybelle. This installment, in which Nancy helps a friend whose inn seems to be the target of malicious acts, was full of danger and suspense.

#gottacatchemall @PuddleJumper (prompt 14: “Combee: Flowers“)
#52bookclub24 (prompt 21: “Written by a ghostwriter“)

Librarybelle Excellent choice for ghost writer! Why did I not think of that??? 😂 3mo
Bluebird @Librarybelle me too! Will correct that now! I‘m a bit behind, but reading these too. Fun to go back to books I loved when i was growing up! 3mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle @Bluebird Yes, that was a tough prompt for me too, until I started reading this book and realized it would match! 3mo

Mehso-so

This classic novella was atmospheric and tense, and it inspired a lot of modern cosmic horror stories. However, I found it slow moving and didn't care for any of the characters.
