Among Thieves | M. J. Kuhn
post image
Mehso-so

This book centers on a group of thieves, who must work together. But each has their own motivations & secrets, & each plan to betray the others.

Minimal world-building. A magic system that‘s used more as a form of slavery & a way to rule this world than real magic. Multiple POVs & I couldn‘t connect to the characters.

I'm not sure I liked this one enough to pick up book 2 even though this one ended on a big ole cliffhanger.

Well, I culled over 100 books off my shelf (left photo) . . . but then there were all these holes on my shelves. 🤷🏼‍♀️ so I *had* to fill at least some of the holes (right photo). Right? 😆

wanderinglynn @Crazeedi I heard about PangoBooks & thought I‘d sell a few OwlCrate editions. I started with a handful—a few I had read & wasn‘t crazy about & a few that have been on my shelf forever that I finally admitted I was never going to read. Once I started with those, I realized my bookshelf looked better, & so I pulled a few more. Then I sold a few on Pango. And then I pulled a few more. And I really felt better after culling. 20h

I was reading another book but this one kept interrupting. I had ignored this book b/c I didn‘t like The Girl the Sea Gave Back. But the red door kept calling. (Don‘t you hate it when books get fussy & demanding that you read them?) I finally put down the other book & picked this one up to shush it. I thought I‘d read a chapter then go back to my other book. That was a few hours ago. Now I‘ve finished & I‘m wondering what the heck happened. 👇🏻

wanderinglynn I will admit that despite my dislike of the other book, Ms. Young certainly made up for it in this one. Maybe the difference is that one was set in an entirely fiction fantasy place & this one, while Jasper, NC doesn't exist, (at least not where it is in this book. There actually is a Jasper, NC over on the eastern side of the state near Morehead City, about 5.5 hours east of Asheville, whereas this Jasper is supposed to be north of Asheville). 6d
wanderinglynn The one thing that I thought she might explore more is how and why the curse came to be. I mean if you're going to call it a curse, then that presumes that someone placed it upon the Farrow family. Curses just don't pop out of nowhere. I think that's the one main flaw with this story. (edited) 6d
wanderinglynn This one wasn‘t on my #wyrdandwonder TBR, but I‘m also not very good at following my own rules. Besides, this book was being cranky because I had been ignoring it. Sometimes the books know best & in this case, it was right. I did enjoy this story. 3.75 stars rounded up. 6d

I wanted to finish this book, to find out what happened to Roman and Iris. And yet, I kept putting it down because I also didn't want to finish it as I knew, KNEW, my heart would be torn to shreds by the end.

And it was.

But I also have some mixed feelings about this book. While I enjoyed it, I didn't love it like I loved DR. DR will clearly be one of my favorite read of the year. This one will fall somewhere further down the list.

While I loved The Seven Year Slip, this one did not make the cut for me. Off my shelf and onto my PangoBooks shelf!

The story definitely has a Disney-esque fairytale feel to it. Clearly she‘s is a huge Disney fan—from the title to the animal friends, the curse, and all of the Disney easter eggs, like:

“But can you imagine? Me, dancing with that boorish, brainless. . ."

I skimmed most of it & never missed anything.

Tress of the Emerald Sea | Brandon Sanderson
post image
Mehso-so

Several people have recommend Sanderson to me. I decided to give this one a go because (1) it's not over 500 pages & (2) it's a stand alone.

Honestly, I almost DNF'd it because I got bored & kept putting it down. I finally started skimming it just to see how it resolved. I realize I'm not the target demographic for this book, & maybe that's the issue. Overall, it was just okay, but it doesn't make me want to pick up any of his other books.

Ruthiella I think you could read the first Mistborn novel as a stand alone. It is 600+ pages, however. I read that trilogy and am happy to not read any further. But I understand the draw. He‘s so popular, it‘s hard to not have FOMO. 😃 1w
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella I‘ve picked up the first Mistborn book so many times when at a bookstore, mostly because people keep recommending it to me, but for some reason, I‘ve never gotten it. It just never called to me. And after reading this book, I doubt I‘ll ever pick it up or anything else he‘s written. I just didn‘t dig his writing + there are too many other books on my TBR. 1w
Laughterhp I‘ve tried to read Sanderson a few times too, but he‘s just not for me.. I bailed on this book. I read the first Mistborn but I think I only got through it because I read it on audio. 1w

bookandbedandtea Petals and Pages, 956 Santa Fe Drive. It's small, and niche, but cool. 2w
wanderinglynn @Gissy I‘m the same way—I always find local indie bookstores. 2w
wanderinglynn @JamieArc Petals & Pages is very small & niche. It was cute but I wouldn‘t go back. Mutiny (used books & comics) is chaos. If you‘re a comic person, it‘s probably great. As for books, well there was general org (fiction, non-fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, poetry, etc) but within those general genres, there was no real organization. Also, it was dark and hard to see the titles. 👇🏻 2w
wanderinglynn I drove by Kilgore but the location & building seemed a bit sketchy so I didn‘t stop. Tattered Cover (I went to the one on Colfax) was great. Two thumbs up. Has both used & new. I also went to the Bookstore on Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, which I also liked. (And it‘s just called “Bookstore”). 2w

What did I just read?! Because my heart has been ripped out & now I have to wait, WAIT, for the sequel.

I don't think I'm going to make it. Had I known, HAD I KNOWN, this was book 1 & there will be a book 2, I would have left this book ON MY SHELF until book 2 was released like exactly what I did with Strike the Zither by Joan He. Instead, I'm left with a gaping hole in my chest.

This is why I normally read reviews & check out the book. 👇🏻

The story is both sad & hopeful, full of the magic & wonder of nature. Yes, there is witch magic, but it's so interconnected with the world. I found that simply beautiful. Having lived in the PNW, I could feel myself in that old growth forest, which does have a magic, turning her fear & anxiety into hope & even joy. Although I knew how the story would end, I loved seeing how things played out.

There are threads of an idea but it was poorly executed. It seemed the author was trying to explore the concept of fate” but it came across as a cheap plot device. The entire story felt like a series of scenes with no overall plot or end goal. And the title bugs me. I get that it's the 3d book and there's a theme, and maybe I'm being pedantic, but Dante didn't get drunk—Cherry *drugged* him (which I‘m not even going to comment on). And I didn‘t like Cherry.

Overall, disappointing. It just felt like lazy story writing just to get a 3d book out.

It started off okay but quickly became disappointing. Uneven pacing & writing, poor character development & world building. I won't even go into the plot holes. Since this was bookshop no. 5 for me, I got a gift—a Second Story pin & notebook.

I‘m at 10k+ steps and it‘s only 1:30. That‘s 5 hours of glorious bookshop browsing.

There‘s 1 more bookshop I want to hit, but first a stop at home to eat & rest for a minute.

mrp27 Wonderful! 3w
TieDyeDude An excellent day! I collect pins; it's cool that store had some. 3w

4th bookstore visited for my DC #IndependentBookstoreDay tour!

Solid State Books is a cute little bookshop in the Adam‘s Morgan district. I‘m more than halfway through my list of 6. I left my house at 8:30 this morning, it‘s currently 12:30, & I‘ve walked 4 miles already!

Next up is Second Street Books in Dupont!

Leftcoastzen You are really rocking Indie Bookstore Day! 3w
wanderinglynn @Leftcoastzen I‘m trying! 😁 3w

Second stop for #IndependentBookstoreDay was @eastcitybookshop also near Eastern Market.

East City is also celebrating their 8th anniversary 🎉

Now back to the metro to head to the northwest part of the city to visit Loyalty Books.

First stop on #IndependentBookstoreDay : Capitol Hill Books in Eastern Market.

I love used books. I could have spent the whole day here just browsing. But the day is short & I have a list of bookshops to get to! Next stop, just down the street, East City Bookshop!

#bookhaul

ImperfectCJ I'm going to be in DC in July (great time for walking the city 🙄), and I'm watching your posts for ideas of which bookstores to visit while I'm there! 3w
wanderinglynn @ImperfectCJ yes, such a great time to walk the city 🥵🤣🤣🤣 But there are sooo many great bookstores! 3w
ImperfectCJ @wanderinglynn This will be my first time visiting with my kids since they became adult-sized, so I'm excited to explore some things that aren't the zoo and the National Cathedral School playground. :-) I used to go into the city from NoVA in high school, but that was a looong time ago and lots has changed. 3w
wanderinglynn @ImperfectCJ I hope you have an amazing trip. There‘s so much to see in DC. 3w

Absolutely loved this little book. I really want to start the next one, but I need to get to bed so I‘m ready for #IBD tomorrow!

behudd One of my best books of the year last year. So wonderful! 3w
wanderinglynn @behudd it‘s definitely going to be one of my top books this year. 👍🏻 3w
TieDyeDude I read this a couple months ago. Loved it. I'm going to prioritize the sequel in May! 3w
wanderinglynn @TieDyeDude the sequel is just as awesome! 3w

Pre-gaming Independent Bookstore Day. This is the route if I try to hit all 19 participating DC bookstores. Letter A is where I live.

#IndependentBookstoreDay #indiebookstores

MaGoose Good luck! 4w
Susanita Ambitious! 4w
wanderinglynn @Susanita @MaGoose not sure I‘ll try for all 19. I think 5 is more reasonable. 4w

Princess-Kingofkings It will definitely be fun! 4w
wanderinglynn @Princess-Kingofkings it certainly will be! 👍🏻 4w
TheBookHippie Thankfully ours is a month long Saturday is kickoff!! 4w
wanderinglynn @TheBookHippie that would be awesome. I could easily get to all 19 on a month. But in 1 day, and I don‘t have a car & some of these are a bit of a hike from the nearest metro station. 4w
Aims42 This is awesome!!! Bring your water and energy bars 😎 You got this! 4w
dabbe 🤩😱🤩 4w
wanderinglynn @Aims42 thanks! ☺️ 4w
Bookwormjillk Are you walking between each one? 4w
Jess I did the DC book crawl last year and it was a blast. Can‘t make it down this year so I will live vicariously through you. Have fun! 4w
wanderinglynn @Bookwormjillk I‘ll walk & metro because I don‘t own a car! 4w
wanderinglynn @Jess thanks! Sorry you‘re going to miss it. 4w
TheBookHippie @wanderinglynn I‘ve done it in Chicago a few times on the L and walking 😅🤪😵‍💫 4w
BookmarkTavern Wow! 🤩🤩🤩 4w
wanderinglynn @TheBookHippie I bet you got a week‘s worth of steps in one day! 🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @wanderinglynn Oh my word yes. 🤪 3w
Lesliereadsalot Wow lucky you to have so many bookstores around you! 3w
wanderinglynn @Lesliereadsalot yes, that is one benefit of living in DC. 3w
TieDyeDude Ha! I've drawn a route like that for breweries, but I've never lived anywhere with that many bookstores! 🍻 😅 3w
wanderinglynn @TieDyeDude ooh, a brewery crawl would be super fun! 🍺 3w
TieDyeDude Leesburg, VA isn't too far from you. That was a great little beer town. It'd be interesting to see how many are still there. I didn't spend much time visiting breweries in DC, though, last time I was there. Denver has plenty, though 😉 (edited) 3w
Suet624 I applaud you. 3w
wanderinglynn @Suet624 oh, I didn‘t end up even attempting all 19. I made it to 5 & that was enough. 😆 3w
Suet624 5 is respectable. 😊 3w

#sundayfunday

I‘ve met Jimmy Carter, John Scalzi, T.J. Klune, Darynda Jones, David Lipsky, Joy Harlow, Shelby Van Pelt, Ed Yong, Todd Lockwood, & several more I‘m blanking on right now.

I‘d love to meet the wife-husband team Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Robin Hobb, & Martha Wells.

BarkingMadRead I‘ve met James Patterson, Alex Michaelides, Nancy Naigle, Skye McDonald, Kerry Evelyn, Evelyn Lederman, Carolyn Brown, and a bunch more Indie Authors as well. I don‘t know who else I want to meet, meeting James Patterson was a let down, so I don‘t think I want to meet too many really famous authors. 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures I don't realize until this moment that Ilona Andrews was a married couple! How very cool! 4w
wanderinglynn @ChaoticMissAdventures yep, Ilona & Gordon 4w

wanderinglynn @BarkingMadRead sorry Patterson was a let down 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarkingMadRead it's hard when they are not what you hoped for, worst when they are just awful after working with Janet Evanovich I never suggested her books to another person. 4w
wanderinglynn @ChaoticMissAdventures oh, I didn‘t realize she was awful. Good thing I already stopped buying her books a while back anyway. 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures @wanderinglynn @BarkingMadRead she was just super difficult to work with - incredibly demanding. And like anyone (I never met Patterson) could have been a bad day on top of it. 4w
BookmarkTavern Oh I‘d love to eventually meet Scalzi! Thanks for posting! 4w
