1. One of my favorite students stopped by my apartment with his mom to drop off gratitude salted fudge and chocolate chip blondie bars that he‘d baked himself!

2. Takeaway spicy dal soup made a perfect breakfast on a chilly morning

3. An especially pretty sunset

4. The selection of caffeinated teas I ordered for summer arrived!

5. After several weeks of exhaustion I‘m starting to feel more human again,🤞🏼!

Finally starting to get a little strength back after several crazy draining weeks causing a major flare. But I‘m still trying to spend most of my time in bed so I don‘t overdo it and end up right back where I started. Luckily kitty and Miss Marple are helping me out. This is one of the most all consuming stories I‘ve picked up in months! Just read 100 pages straight through without even noticing!

batsy I really like this Christie. Both the Joan Hickson and Geraldine McEwan adaptations are really fun, too. 3d

I connect to, and fall in love with, something different in each of Jane‘s books, but this is one of the few where I connect to the leading women in a way that I actually see whispers of myself in them and their actions. I know I always say I‘ve just read my favorite, but I actually think it may be true this time 😂 I‘m slowly rereading all her works so eventually I‘ll get back to you also on my favorite at 41.

LiteraryinLawrence I feel that way about some of Austen‘s work too! I think this one and P&P are the ones I can reread and always find something new. 4d

I found this opened up even more with a second read. I get why this isn‘t a popular book on Litsy, but I like experimental fiction & poetic writing & I‘m so impressed by what Rhys was able to do with Antoinette & Rochester‘s characters. The way she was able to open up their backstories, make them each both sympathetic & callous, and leave you in sync with the source story but also have things still feel ambiguous. #hashtagbrigade @BarkingMadRead

BarkingMadRead Well said! There are definitely parts I didn‘t like, but that is usually the case with most books. Overall, I enjoyed it, even the characters you love to hate 5d
lil1inblue This is probably one of my favorite books. I love what Rhys did with it. Just fascinating. 5d

When you nostalgia watch a 90s movie loosely based on one of your favorite 80s books, and then get hit with insomnia you clearly have to reread the original book. Or relisten, if the audio is all that‘s available on Libby in the middle of the night. It holds up surprisingly well for a light teen read written in 1972.

I had my last tutoring session yesterday with a student who‘s been reading this on and off all year to practice his Hebrew decoding skills, but leaving it in the middle of a chapter was driving me crazy 🤪 and reading children‘s books is good for my language skills, so I pulled it off the shelf and read it for my own amusement this morning 😄

Sace A long time ago I was pretty decent at decoding the Hebrew of the siddur. I should pull out the books I used to learn Hebrew and refresh my skills. Your post has inspired me. (edited) 2w

Broken Horses: A Memoir | Brandi Carlile
post image

#TuesdayTunes

While listening to this memoir the last few weeks I kept thinking about the fact that I actually became a Brandi Carlile fan because my bff and I went to an Indigo Girls concert at a tiny venue in Main somewhere during their Despite our Differences tour, and she was their opening act. And while I liked her set, what actually captured me and got me to buy her cd and go back and listen to her music more carefully was that she sang ⬇️

IndoorDame a third harmony line to a lot of Amy and Emily‘s songs, which was such cool twist on music we knew really well! I‘ve been looking for recordings of the three of them singing together this week and I think that show was too small for there to be any recordings of it, but I‘ve found a few things from other shows on that tour and a bunch of more recent stuff. ⬇️ 2w

Frida's Bed: A Novel | Slavenka Drakulic
post image
Pickpick

This is a brief fictional biography of Frida Kahlo, told entirely from inside her own mind, focusing mostly on her relationship with Diego Rivera, and her chronic illnesses. Drakulić and I don‘t have the same vision of Frida, but I can tell this story was incredibly well crafted because instead of dismissing it I found myself alternately questioning my own vision, and arguing with the author inside my head. #bookspin

There were definitely moments in her life that I connected with, but in many ways for all her celebrity, this is just the story of a life. I would really recommend this (especially on audio) for people who are already fans of her music. Because what really struck me here, was hearing the stories behind songs I already knew well, and listening to her sing the songs she‘d just been discussing writing and performing at the end of each chapter.

I don‘t know if I‘ll manage to read a new one of her‘s for #AAM or not, but I‘m really glad I decided to start by rereading this because I found it much more affecting the second time, and I also found I was better able to to approach it inquisitively several more years post pandemic as life is actually snapping back to normal. I also think her books may work better for me in print than on audio. @Soubhiville

mcctrish I just heard a reference to this book and how post pandemic the author doesn‘t feel like this story could be a possible dystopian reality - we are so not in a collective mindset anymore ( or so many people aren‘t ) I loved this book, my heart is broken 2w
IndoorDame @mcctrish that‘s so interesting! I‘ll have to think more on our collective mindset and this book. But I was definitely thinking about how the pandemic changed my perception of what the actual scope of something like the flu in this novel (and other apocalyptic esque fiction) would actually be, how many orders of magnitude more than something like Covid, how would we actually react to something that frightening?… 2w

I find it so fascinating that as I get older this is starting to become one of my favorite Austen‘s even though Fanny and I are nothing alike, and IRL as I get older I actually get less and less patient with persistent romantic advances, and probably wouldnt‘ve forgiven Edmund for his part in the whole “just give Henry a chance” campaign.

#pemberlittens I couldn‘t sleep and stumbled across this set of books where someone has compiled 50-100 illustrations for each novel from illustrated editions published circa 1830-1910 by 5 different illustrators. I may have to have them all!!!!! But I‘m thinking I should start with Mansfield. I‘m rereading it right now, and my Chiltern copy is stunning but totally devoid of pictures.

Panpan

I‘m not panning this because it‘s bad, I just wasn‘t the intended audience. Sometimes graphic memoirs reach out and touch deeply me even when they‘re wrestling with questions I‘m not, or I‘ve already answered. This one didn‘t. It was more like rambling conversations I‘ve had with friends over the years trying to sort out ourselves and our lives. Which makes the book essential if you don‘t know people actually asking these questions when you are.

IndoorDame @dabbe it‘s so liberating! I am reading some new things that are speaking to me! Though I‘m also cheating a little and rereading Mansfield Park which is making me happiest of all 😉 3w
dabbe I've never read MANSFIELD PARK; is it your favorite Austen? 🤗 3w
IndoorDame @dabbe it‘s hard to pick a favorite, they all have their charms, it used to be Northanger Abbey because I was just so enchanted by how guileless Catherine is, but what I find romantic is shifting as I get older and I‘m liking Mansfield better with each reread 3w
dabbe @IndoorDame I must read it, then! 🤩 3w

Pickpick

This is exactly why I love letting other people pick some of my reads! You could seriously never have described this in a sentence or two in a way that would‘ve made me think I wanted to spend a month savoring this novella, but I would have been wrong. This was exactly what I didn‘t know I needed, wanted, was looking for right now… #sundaybuddyread
