Any Littens with fond memories of Dark Shadows? @UwannaPublishme and I are starting a #buddyread of the tagged book, and we‘d be thrilled to have you join us for our journey back to Collinwood.

We‘re starting today with the Foreword by DS actress Kathryn Leigh Scott and Introduction by the author. A chapter a day after that, but please feel free to jump in at any time. 🦇

#hometoshadows #TheresNoPlaceLikeCollinwood

UwannaPublishme Yay! I‘m ready! 1d
UwannaPublishme Perfect to have Kathryn Leigh Scott write the foreword! It‘s stirring up so many memories already! My cousin was one of the many fans who hung out outside the NY studio. She‘d call us and report the scoop. I was so jealous when she met Chris Jennings (the first werewolf). I thought he was so cute. I also love how Dan Curtis consulted the fans about a story arc. We did get so immersed in the details, didn‘t we? 18h

Am I the only one who thought the introduction comparing this to Agatha Christie was a bit much? I enjoyed it, but felt like I could see what was coming a mile away. It was much more Gothic romance to me than murder mystery. And Cynthia might be the dopiest Gothic heroine I‘ve ever encountered. 😂

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Tamra 😆 dopey, yes! 7d

quietjenn Definitely not just you, with the intro. 7d
Ruthiella Awesome photo and review! 😂😂😂 I did not read the introduction, but I am vicariously annoyed on Christie‘s behalf. (edited) 7d
willaful @Ruthiella 😂 Also, Christie's characters, though very much types, have some *life* to them. These were such cardboard cutouts. 7d
julieclair Spot! 🥹 And I didn‘t read the intro, but Christie?? Ummm…. that would be no. 😆 7d
jlhammar Poor Spot 😢 Yes, agree with all of that! 6d
batsy Haven't read it yet but I guess the intro writer went all in to sell this book to the reader 😁 6d
CarolynM I skipped the introduction, but it sounds like it might be amusing. This one was nothing like any Agatha Christie I‘ve ever read. 6d

They Knew Mr. Knight | Dorothy Whipple
post image

This quote made me think of a story my mom told me, about her aunt having a permanent wave (with one of these machines!) She was so thrilled with it, she couldn‘t stop brushing her hair, until she‘d brushed out all the wave. Maybe that would have worked for Freda.

I enjoyed the book, but all I can say is, not one character was better off for having known Mr. Knight. 😏

Anna and Her Daughters | D.E. Stevenson
post image

I enjoyed this, but like other Littens, I didn‘t really care for the direction the second half took. I loved Mrs. Millard, Margaret, and Miss Smith and her dolls. Val improved once he met Chairley. I thought it was odd that Anna almost completely disappeared from the story, even though her name is in the title.

But I sure didn‘t think Ronnie was the prize all the sisters thought he was. 😏

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

jlhammar Yes, agree completely! Fun to see the different covers. I hadn‘t seen the one on the left yet. 2mo
Ruthiella No, Ronnie was no prize! I would have preferred Jane finding a new love. Everything else could have happened. 2mo
See All 13 Comments
rubyslippersreads @jlhammar I think that cover kind of gives away the plot. 😏 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella It was like the author thought her readers would expect a “romantic” ending. 2mo
julieclair I agree about the cover giving away the plot. That always annoys me! 2mo
CarolynM You‘ve summed it up so well👏 2mo
batsy Was wondering about the vanishing of Anna, too 😆 And Ronnie is definitely no prize. Those covers are lovely! 2mo
LeahBergen Just how I felt! I was a bit over Ronnie by the end. 😆 2mo
Jess_Read_This @batsy @LeahBergen The allure of Ronnie was lost on my by the end too. He couldn‘t make up his mind on Helen. He is in the U.K. And sees Jane but it‘s a short visit and can‘t make the time to see his son, plus the way he treats the African staff was wrong. He is no prize. 2mo
Jess_Read_This @Ruthiella Agree!! I just wrote something similar. Too bad things didn‘t work out with Jane‘s American stargazer beau. 2mo
Ruthiella @Jess_Read_This So many romantic possibilities…all wasted! 😆 2mo

I ended up enjoying this, although I got a bit tired of Evelina‘s worshipful letters to her foster father. She was almost too good (and sometimes too naive) to be true . I also found the twist at the end pretty unbelievable.

I loathed Mme DuVal and the Branghtons. Captain Mirval was a jerk, but sometimes funny. Clement was a creep, and Lord Orville was, like Evelina, almost too good to be true. So I guess they were meant to be together. ⬇️

I have mixed feelings about this book. The story was interesting, and I wanted to find out what happened, but it was also sometimes almost unbearably raw and painful. That‘s the reason I gave it a So-So, rather than a pick, because there were multiple times I almost bailed.

Here‘s a photo of what seems to be the “modified habit” mentioned in the book. I can see why it would have been both a shock and a relief to wear it.

#nunlit

Librarybelle Thanks for the photo! 4mo
marleed I still remember when over a weekend the dress code for the order of nuns teaching at my grade school went from full habit to street clothes. One of the sisters arrived in a Hawaiian moo moo that had been gifted her after a family members vacation. It was shocking. rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella @elkeOriginal Maybe the book should have been titled Scissors, since he‘s much more important to the story than the department store. 6mo

My favorite fictional spirit is Captain Gregg from the tagged book. I don‘t picture him as depicted on this vintage dust jacket, though. Rex Harrison and Edward Mulhare are more my taste in sea captains. 😄

dabbe I had the biggest crush on him after seeing this movie! 🤩🤩🤩 7mo
LeahBergen I do love that vintage cover, though! 7mo
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen So do I, especially the way it mirrors the film clip. But I always think Captain Gregg should have a beard. 7mo

All Done by Kindness: A Novel | Doris Langley Moore
post image

Now that I‘ve seen Doris, I can‘t help picturing her as Stephanie. And Lorenzo looks pretty crabby about what‘s happening to his pictures.

I enjoyed this, but my favorite part was Sir Harry‘s well-deserved punishment—being married to bossy Beatrix.

#FurrowedMiddleBrowClub

Ruthiella Doris would make a perfect Stephanie du Plessis! I think someone like Lorenzo the Magnificent would be pleased with the ultimate outcome and want as many people as possible to admire him posthumously. 8mo
jlhammar Yes! Love the collage. Sir Harry getting his comeuppance the way he did was just perfect 😆 8mo
LeahBergen Haha! Yes, Harry had it coming! 8mo
See All 11 Comments
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella I‘m sure Lorenzo would be happy with the outcome, but not being stuffed in a trunk all those years and then being considered junk. 🤣 8mo
willaful The only problem with that punishment is that bossy Beatrix gets rewarded. 😂 8mo
quietjenn I was waiting the entire book for them both to get what they deserved. A life yoked together seems fitting all around! 8mo
rubyslippersreads @willaful True, but I dislike Sir Harry even more than Beatrix. 😄 8mo

dabbe @rubyslippersreads I've seen the movie TONS of times and love it! Is the book close in plot to the movie? 🤩 8mo
rubyslippersreads @dabbe Yes and no. I love the book, but I think I love the movie even more. ❤️ 8mo
LeahBergen Two that you‘ve already made me buy in the past! 😆😆 8mo
dabbe @rubyslippersreads That's unusual, isn't it? But hey, it's Tierney and Rexie! BTW, I had a huge crush on him after this movie, MY FAIR LADY, and even DR. DOLITTLE! 🤩🤩🤩 8mo

Miss Carter and the Ifrit | Susan Alice Kerby

I enjoyed this book (although it dragged a bit for me in spots). I found Joe very endearing, and was glad to see both him and Miss Carter move on to the next phases of their lives. (But what did she do with all the jewels?)

The photo is a glimpse of how Joe might have sometimes decorated Georgina‘s flat.

Tamra Fabulous pic! 10mo
Ruthiella Love that image! I think she pawned some of the pieces for cash, kept one or two and had them set to wear as jewelry and the rest she put in a safe deposit box for safekeeping. She was a very practical lady! 10mo
Aimeesue Great pic! I can really see it now! It‘s only missing his snuff bottle 😁 10mo
batsy Great pic! And hope to come back to your intriguing question once I've read it 😊 10mo
CarolynM Yes! That‘s such a great image for this book! I agree that it had some flat spots, but quite charming over all. I loved that she used some of the jewels to raise money for the Red Cross. I think she will go on in the same way, quietly injecting money into good causes. 10mo

Daddy's Gone A-hunting | Penelope Mortimer, Valerie Grove

The word I would choose to describe this book is “claustrophobic.” Ruth‘s marriage to the horrible Rex, being trapped with Miss de Beer, and the whole lifestyle of the Common. Very interesting, but I‘m glad Angela could escape and, although the writing is excellent, I‘m glad to escape as well.

Does anyone else think this Persephone endpaper gives off a Handmaid‘s Tale vibe?

#PersephoneClub

sisilia I had the same feeling. The writing is good but I didnt want to linger 11mo
Tamra Oh gosh, yes it does! I didn‘t notice it before. Terrific description of the novel, “claustrophobic.” Indeed. 11mo
See All 11 Comments
Tamra @sisilia I wanted Ruth‘s story to continue, if nothing more for her to make her own happiness! That was my hope anyway. 😏 (edited) 11mo
jlhammar Yes, I can definitely see that! Great review. Good to know what I‘ll be getting myself into. Look forward to reading this weekend! 11mo
merelybookish Yes, I get what you're saying. I found the pace moved quickly tho. And I even felt a bit sorry for Rex. 11mo
rubyslippersreads @merelybookish Not me. I wanted Ruth to hit Rex with a clock, like Betty did to Robert. 🤣 11mo
Cathythoughts Great review! I‘m looking forward to starting today. Yes! I see the Handmaid vibes 👍🏻 11mo
willaful I found it quite excruciating. The intense frustration of people always getting in your business and in your way, and the ugliness with which Ruth views life. 11mo
LeahBergen Great review and you‘re so right about the claustrophobic atmosphere! 11mo
LeahBergen Yep, Rex definitely needed to be brained with a clock, too. 😆 11mo
