I own a few copies of Little Women but decided to read from my most recent edition acquisition, the #BOTM version.

I‘ve read this a couple of times, so I‘m looking forward to this reread. Fun fact: If I ever had a daughter, her name would be Josephine Elizabeth, after my two favorite female characters, Jo March and Elizabeth Bennet. #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade

Mehso-so

Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for this #ALC !

When a small group of bookstore employees are told to immediately shut down their bookstore, they decide to stay, refusing to leave to show the importance of the store to the community. The reader sees the story from the perspective of the manager Jo, as she and a half dozen staff keep the online bookstore sales running.

It‘s a fun premise. There is the power of books and their special ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ connection to people. There is growth of the characters, which was nice to see. The narrative itself seemed a little longer than necessary, and Jo‘s frequent repetitive thoughts was a little too much for me sometimes. There is a side story that I‘m not exactly sure why it was added, other than a humanity aspect. Okay listen. The voice narrator was good. I did like the book quotes throughout! And who wouldn‘t want to be in a bookstore overnight? 2d
Hooked_on_books What an awesome premise! What a bummer it wasn‘t a better book. 1d
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books It is a great premise! I‘m sure the author modeled it after Powells, since the story takes place in Portland. But, it just did not grab me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1d

8. Consider the mothers and daughters in this book: Veronique and Marie-Louise; Veronique and her mother, Danielle; the queen and her daughters; and Madame du Pompadour and Alexandrine. What are the common threads in all those relationships? Which ones did you most identify with? ~from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

kspenmoll One common thread is that there was physical distance between them all. Also in most cases the daughters were taken from their mothers at birth or at a young age & raised separately. The mothers had to deal with the agony of that loss. The mothers either did not have a choice in this because they were under their husbands rule or as in Veronique‘s case, her mother believed what she was told that her daughter‘s life would be much richer. (edited) 2d
julieclair @kspenmoll is correct, in that all of the daughters were separated from their mothers, one way or another . It is hard for me to imagine that. I really don‘t identify with any of them. 10h

7. What do you think becomes of Marie-Louise, Veronique, and Jean-Louis in the years after the novel ends? How do you envision their future? ~adapted from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

mcctrish I hope Jean-Louis lived a good life and stayed in touch with his mom. 2d
kspenmoll I loved that fact that Marie-Louise was going to join her son in the New World. 2d
julieclair It‘s so fascinating to think that the daughter and grandson of the French king could be living like ordinary people in the new world. Imagine tracing your genealogy nowadays and discovering that! 10h

6. How might Marie-Louise's life had differed had she known the truth of her mother and father, rather than learning years later? ~adapted from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

mcctrish If her guardians had told her I think it might have crushed her and if it had been public knowledge I think she‘d have been killed in the uprisings (edited) 2d
kspenmoll I agree with @mcctrish in that she was protected during the Revolution while her husband ultimately was not because he took her dowry money that was traced to the crown. 2d
julieclair I think she would have been happier overall if she had known the truth, rather than just thinking that her parents didn‘t care about her. But I agree that not knowing probably did save her life during the Revolution. 10h

5. Why does Marie-Louise become a midwife? What about her history may have made her uniquely qualified for this calling? ~from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

mcctrish I think she needed to do something, have a role, not be disposable ( worthless) and midwifery was just what was presented to her as a viable vocation. She was smart and capable and being a midwife was seemingly the best job a woman at that time could have and keep after marriage and children 2d
kspenmoll She was interested in & studying science- she knew she could not be a doctor in the society she lives in. She did not want to be a nurse, assisting doctors. She observed how independent, in charge, respected & knowledgeable her mentor was & she wanted that life. 2d
julieclair She just found herself in that situation, and ran with it. She really didn‘t have many options. 10h

4. Why is it so hard for Veronique to move on after the king spurns her, despite knowing that her future has been assured if she's willing to go along with the plan? Why does she continue to insist that the king is the father of her child? Would you have done the same? ~from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

mcctrish She was young and thought the relationship was a two way street. The trauma of a sexual relationship so young, the lack of education and then the consequences ( pregnancy and dismissal) broke her heart and her mind. I think realizing how absolutely disposable I was would break me 2d
kspenmoll @mcctrish I agree- she believed all he had told her about being his love- just a child & he was all she had. She insists he is the father of her child because he is the only man she had sex with during that time. It is beyond her ability to grasp that he is done with her. (edited) 2d
julieclair Poor Veronique was completely under the control of others. First her mother “sold” her, then Mme. Pompadour and Lebel controlled every aspect of her life. Insisting that the king is her baby‘s father is the only thing she can control. 11h

3. At the start of the novel, we are told that the king's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, “. . .knows that the world is not run by those who trust but by those who foresee trouble well before it is conceived.“ Do you agree? Which other characters in this novel share that approach to life? ~from Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

kspenmoll I am at work- will respond later in the day. 2d
Jerdencon The kings main helper (can‘t remember his name right now) definitely lived his life trying to anticipate the next step before the king. 2d
mcctrish @Jerdencon I listened to this so I can‘t look it up but you are absolutely right. I think we all live this way to some extent ( savings, life insurance, looking both ways before we cross the street ) some people have to next level it - body guards 2d
kspenmoll @Jerdencon I think his name is Lebel. He served the king so long that he knew him inside & out - he tells the king he is always “ sniffing for deceit” unlike the king who Lebel tells him he “only sees goodness and innocence around you.” His job is to know what the king needs next. 2d
julieclair I think there‘s a lot of truth in that statement. If someone has anticipated problems and is prepared to handle them, then they can have the luxury of trusting people. If their trust turns out to be misplaced, they‘re ready to deal with it. 11h

2. Before diving into the book, I also wanted to highlight King Louis XV, who is one of the main characters in the novel, and Deer Park. Stachniak includes in her author's note that Deer Park did exist. I was astounded while reading about this!

Here's a little bit more information about Louis XV and Deer Park: https://www.geriwalton.com/parc-aux-cerfs-and-tales-of-louis-xvs-harem/

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

kspenmoll Thanks! This article is better than what I found on the internet! I learned so much through this book- I had no knowledge of the Kings use of young girls. 2d
Jerdencon While I had never heard of deer park before, I can‘t say I was surprised it was going on… these kings thought they could do whatever they wanted and found an excuse to make it seem ok. 2d
mcctrish I had no idea before this book ( but it makes perfect sense) your link is fantastic. This is the best kind of historical fiction 2d
julieclair That link is so interesting. I had never heard of Deer Park before reading this book. As @mcctrish says, this is the best kind of historical fiction. Books like this are why it‘s my favorite genre. 11h

To get us fully immersed, this is the Versailles official website: https://en.chateauversailles.fr/

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

kspenmoll I visited Versailles during my honeymoon- we spent a week in Paris & a week in Italy. The opulence is so striking. It makes you understand why the revolution occurred. 2d
tpixie Versailles is golden opulence! One crazy thing- people would come into the bedrooms of the queen to watch her sleep & get dressed- like a zoo animal !! And whenever a queen would deliver a baby there would be multiple people there watching her to document that it really was a royal birth. 2d
Jerdencon I visited Versailles many years ago - it was beautiful… I have so many pictures of the hall of mirrors! 2d
mcctrish @kspenmoll I went on my honeymoon too ❤️❤️ and again with my boys 15 years later ( watering rationing was very event the second time with only a few fountains running in the gardens on the official water days ☹️) I loved that I could imagine where the characters were when they walked the ground 2d

Wow! Stephanopoulos takes the reader through six decades of presidential history through the confines of the Situation Room. This is a fascinating look at the workings of each president from Kennedy through Biden, the apolitical staffers who interact with them, & the administration staffers. At times poignant and other times horrifying, I learned a lot, and it also confirmed some of my impressions on former presidents. 5 stars!

Admittedly, I almost stopped reading this one after the first couple of chapters - the actions of the main character just completely baffled me, and the response of those actions by law enforcement seemed completely wrong. Cozies are not meant to be real life, but this seemed over the top even for a cozy. The narrative did get better as the story progressed. Lots of suspects and mystery elements, plus a secondary mystery. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️The ending was pretty dramatic, a true nail biter. So-so read in the end for me. Admittedly, I was curious about this one - it‘s hard not to see the ads for the movie everywhere you go! I enjoyed the beginning and the end (oh my about that!) but the middle really dragged for me. There were so many details and aspects of the relationship covered that it just seemed to bog down. I‘m not a voracious romance reader, so that explain my feelings. 🤷🏻‍♀️

NSFW scenes aplenty, so if you listen to this like I did, beware!

This is a little hard to review. On the surface, this is a good story about female friendships in the 1920s and follows them as they navigate Prohibition, depression, suicidal thoughts, and women‘s reproductive health.

I came to this book with a very basic knowledge of Dorothy Parker and her group of friends. The nuances of the 1920s is fun to read. However, after participating in the #SundayBuddyRead ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️there are flaws. And, maybe characterizations that are not accurate to real life. There is a balance that historical fiction authors should follow to capture the essence of the real life character without completely fabricating the character…dialogues are fine, but completely changing a persona is wrong. It seems this is the case for this book. I liked the story, but feels it has to be a so-so rating. 2w

When the school board of the school district I grew up in decided to rescind an invitation for this author to speak at one of the middle schools, I knew I had to read this book. The whole episode was so bizarre that it made international news…and not in a good light.

This is such an amazing book, following Rahul as he struggles with so much - his identity, lack of inclusion and diversity in the community, and his overall desire to fit in. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️Pancholy captures the awkwardness of the tween years perfectly. I learned a bit about Indian culture too! This is so good…highly recommend it. LibrarianRyan Wow. And the school rescinded the invite. Probably because of LGBTQ reasons, or the mere suggestion that that may happen. UGHHH I am glad you liked it. It looked fun. 5d
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Due to backlash, they did decide to re-invite him after all. They did not specifically say for LGBT reasons, but given his “activism” they were afraid he‘d do a political talk to the middle schoolers and that his book was part of it. I‘m pretty sure none of the board members read his books. So aggravating and bizarre! 5d
LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle Ughhhh. That is bizarre. Why would you invite an author you had never read. That seems like the first thing someone would do. Then look at other presentations, or get information about past presentations. Sounds like a lack of planning on the boards part. 5d
Librarybelle @LibrarianRyan Also bizarre, it was the school, not the school board, who initially invited. The school board took it upon themselves to rescind the invite, which I think was initially in 2020. Ridiculous! But, I‘m glad he is finally coming. 5d

5. The diary in Swedish is the centerpiece of this book. I wanted to close the questions by sharing this collection of diaries and other manuscripts housed at the Library of Congress: https://blogs.loc.gov/manuscripts/category/diaries/

I also liked this from George Mason University about diaries and letters: https://historymatters.gmu.edu/mse/letters/whydo.html

Did you keep a diary? Do you still keep a diary? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead I don‘t keep a diary, I do have a planner which I rip pages out of as the days go by, and I have a reading journal and a workout journal. I also have a gratitude journal but I have to start it 🙈 3w
Bookwormjillk The closest I've come to a diary is my reading journals which I've kept since 2014.

I kept thinking why doesn't she just google it? Imagine having to wait for a certain baker to come to work in order to get an answer to a question. Modern day sleuths must feel so pampered compared to Nancy!
3w
DGRachel I‘ve started journals off and on over the year. Mostly I have notebook ps dedicated to specific classes or coaching programs and I‘ll have sections of thoughts about the course that may dig deeper in feelings, but I always wonder how I‘ll dispose of them before I die so no one gets to or has to go through my babbling. 😂 3w
See All 18 Comments
DGRachel And to tag onto what @Bookwormjillk said about Google - I am old enough to remember doing research via card catalogs, microfilm, microfisch, and encyclopedias. Sleuths these days are spoiled. 🤣🤣 3w
bookandbedandtea @DGRachel One of the reasons I don't keep journals/ diaries is because I wouldn't want anyone reading them when I'm gone! 😆 RE Google, etc, when my daughter read these she was struck by the lack of cell phones. Nancy would see something suspicious then have to drive miles away to find a gas station with a phone. Detectives in the past certainly had a harder time of it! 3w
dabbe @DGRachel Agree 💯! And how about writing your entire research paper out on index cards so that you could move them around and sort/resort? 😂😂😂 3w
dabbe I keep a book journal full of favorite quotes from each book I read. I've also started a daily journal thanks to wonderful prompts provided by @TheBookHippie. I haven't written every day, but I've written more than I have in the past. 😀 3w
DGRachel @bookandbedandtea The phone boxes got me, too. I think of how reliant I am on mine and wonder how I ever lived without one. 😂 3w
Ruthiella I kept a journal when younger. I need to toss them, because reading them is embarrassing now. 😬 Definitely though, these books underscore how far we‘ve come technologically. How many people now keep notes and appointments on their phones instead of on paper? 3w
CogsOfEncouragement My grand gave me a diary for xmas when I was young, I was never good at keeping it up. My bf (now husband) gave me a journal during our dating & I wrote in that for a time. I kept a journal as a new mom. I gave it to my daughter on her 18th. I've got one for my son that I will give him soon too. Now I keep a bullet journal. Kind of a record of what I did each day, no deep thoughts. It has already been a handy record for my family. 3w
AmandaBlaze I had a diary when I was younger. It was more like a Harriet the Spy notebook than anything else. I wanted to be a detective back then. I didn't really keep up with it past age 8.
I have a book journal now, which I try to keep up to date.
(edited) 3w
mrp27 My aunt gave me a Precious Momenta diary when I was young, third or fourth grade, & the first thing I wrote in it was about watching the royal wedding Princess Diana & Prince Charles. I kept up writing regularly until I got married, age 27 and threw all of them away when I moved cross country but wish I kept my childhood ones. I don‘t journal regularly anymore but I find myself writing during trying times. It‘s‘ helpful when working through stuff. 2w
Sace @DGRachel I‘m planning a glorious (and controlled and safe) bonfire for mine. 2w
Sace I‘ve kept many diaries and journals throughout my life. I used to keep only one at a time but now I jota notes and thoughts everywhere. Sometimes in my (analog) planner, sometimes in my journal. I do have a dedicated reading journal, but I only just recently in the last year started that one. I think my younger self wrote a lot more but older me sometimes can‘t manage more than “Good day today, but I‘m tired.” 🤣 2w
Roary47 @CogsOfEncouragement Yes! I have a journal for each of my kids talking about their highlights. I‘ve found my memory isn‘t the greatest so when they turn 18 they will have a log of everything they did and how proud I am of them. I had a Lisa Frank journal when I was younger. I read it a while ago and was Impressed at how much I caught on to as a kid. 2w
kwmg40 @mrp27 I too had a Precious Moments diary when I was a child! 2w
kwmg40 I‘ve kept journals, diaries and scrapbooks at various times in my life. Like @Ruthiella, I cringe at the thought of reading the thoughts of my younger self, so I never do it. 2w
DebinHawaii I journal & have a couple for different purposes. As a child I had a Holly Hobbie diary but I was never good in keeping up with it. 6d

4. We finally meet Ned in this book! Though referenced briefly in a prior book - and that seems to me a continuity issue, given what we learn in this book - Nancy meets Ned at the scene of the fire. There is instant attraction!

I saw some comments from #LittenDetectives that they really enjoyed Bess in this one.

Thoughts to share on Bess, George, or Ned? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead I love Ned. I don‘t remember him being mentioned before, but they could just be perimenopause 🤣 Bess and George always crack me up, although they aren‘t always super nice to each other! 3w
Bookwormjillk Bess says what we all would be thinking. Can we solve this mystery? I have stuff to do.

Ned was kind of just there. I hope he shows some personality at some point.
3w
DGRachel I liked that we got a proper intro to Ned as opposed to that weird one-liner. Bess and George are always delightful, but I‘ll confess that I don‘t remember a lot of specifics of their behavior in this book. 3w
See All 16 Comments
bookandbedandtea I've always related most to Bess as I, too, am not thrilled about getting dirty, would be hesitant to jump into danger, and am usually wondering when lunch is! 😃 I remember really liking Ned because he doesn't outshine Nancy. He's always impressed by her deductions and doesn't try to coddle her or take over. He was my first #litcrush and I still have a soft spot for him. 3w
dabbe @Bookwormjillk So many dates, so little time. 😂 3w
dabbe Maybe we should now keep track of how many times they eat, and/or how many hot fudge sundaes Bess wants? I forgot how hungry these books make me! 🤩 3w
Ruthiella I love Nancy‘s support Scooby Gang! Also, I‘m realizing the fact that Ned has a car is super useful! 3w
CogsOfEncouragement Ahhhh, Ned. Fun to have him around, and he's so darn willing to help. Keep that up buddy. @bookandbedandtea

I felt a little bad for Bess, her dates have to be postponed while Nancy is having adventures with her love interest. Nothing is fair in this life. @Bookwormjillk @dabbe
3w
AmandaBlaze I really like Ned. He is a good mystery helper, and seems as intelligent as Nancy. As Carson Drew mentioned, she seems to like him a lot more than the other guys she dated.
I like that even though Bess scares easily, she faces up to her fears. I always enjoy George's sarcasm.
3w
kspenmoll It was nice to finally meet Ned & have him be such a help to Nancy & her friends- not condescending towards her enthusiasm for solving crime. 3w
mrp27 I enjoy Bess and George I just don‘t really care for the food shaming. Thankfully there wasn‘t much of that in this book. Looking forward to more Ned and I too like that he works with Nancy and not try to out do or outsmart her. 3w
lauraisntwilder @mrp27 I agree about the food shaming. 2w
lauraisntwilder I love Bess. She's the voice of reason, but no one listens to her. By all means, put on your dungarees and go dig a hole on private property in the middle of the night, Nancy. Bess and I will be safely at home asleep! 2w
Roary47 I really like this mystery team. I‘m so glad they are together and helping each other again. 2w
kwmg40 I liked having Ned properly introduced to us, rather than just dropped in. However, if I were reading ND for the first time, I wonder if I would have been suspicious of Ned initially. 2w
DebinHawaii I feel most like Bess in these books—the more cautious one who wants to help but has other things she wants to do. Also I get hangry so I want to eat too! 😉 Although, yes, I don‘t like the food-shaming either. I actually thought I imagined the name drop of Ned a couple books back when he was introduced here. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6d

3. Nancy and her friends experience a few adventures in this one - the most intense for me was the road rage episode!

Are there any “danger“ aspects that stick out for you?

Note for those keeping track of the bumps on the head: While we did not have a #NancyNogginKnockout , Nancy was slapped in the face!

BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 definitely less danger, and that road rage incident was super scary! Yikes! 3w
Bookwormjillk This one was danger lite. I agree the scene with the truck on the bridge was most intense. I don't think she even got tied up in this one did she? (edited) 3w
DGRachel The road rage was terrifying, I think because it‘s the event that seems most “real” of her adventures. 3w
See All 12 Comments
dabbe @DGRachel Especially because it seems to happen a lot these days, too! 😱 3w
Ruthiella I was expecting the road rage incident to somehow tie into the rest of the story because it usually does, but it didn‘t. 😂 Honestly, the slap surprised me the most. That‘s assault! 😱 3w
CogsOfEncouragement @Bookwormjillk I literally had the thought “huh, Nancy didn't get tied up in this one“ LOL

Nancy sure kept her composure after being slapped too. Another one of her skills and talents to be sure.
3w
AmandaBlaze I agree with @Ruthuella. I expected more to come from the truck incident. It was scary, though, especially when they came to the bridge. 3w
kspenmoll The road rage incident gave a contemporary feel to the novel! It seemed like it was intended to demonstrate Nancy‘s patience, & her ability to keep a clear head in the face of danger. 3w
mrp27 Agree with many others in thinking the road rage incident would figure into the plot. Also agree that the slap was startling, it took me by surprise. (edited) 3w
lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella Yes, exactly! I was sure that truck driver was going to show up again with the "bad guy." 2w
AnneCecilie The road rage incident was scary, and as others have already said because it‘s the most “real” of her accidents. I also excepted more to come of it in the story later 2w
DebinHawaii Hopefully the slap wasn‘t hard enough to jar Nancy‘s noggin! 😉 The house explosion & road rage were the most dangerous. 6d

2. In the 1962 edition, two chapters feature a mail theft subplot. Of course, Nancy to the rescue!

According to Wikipedia, some readers are less impressed with this addition to the story - they do not understand the reasoning for this addition, especially since it did not appear in the 1932 edition.

If you read the 1962 edition, what are your thoughts on this?

Link to recent case of mail theft in the US in the comments... #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead Ok, I so read the 1962 version. I think the subplot helped to make our Swedish friend look a little less like a deadbeat, and it‘s definitely something that was huge back then, so I‘m not bad about it 3w
Bookwormjillk I only read the version with the mail theft so I wasn't looking for differences. I liked it though. I thought it was kind of ahead of its time with all the identity theft issues we have going on now. 3w
See All 17 Comments
DGRachel The cynic in me can‘t believe the postal service, Western Union, or law enforcement would act with such speed or urgency. Other than that, it didn‘t bother me as a plot point. I agree with @BarkingMadRead that it actually helped make the man whose name I cannot remember (curse of library books) a more sympathetic character. 3w
bookandbedandtea @DGRachel I agree that it's surprising that any of those agencies would be willing to act so quickly or on her say so. I also agree with @BarkingMadRead that it helps to show Mr Swenson in a good light. I wish I had the earlier version to see how his character was treated/ confirmed in that book. 3w
dabbe Is all of this mainly a small-town sort of thing, where everybody knows your name or at least has heard of the infamous Carson Drew? Maybe that's why they listen to Nancy and are willing to quickly do her bidding. 🤷‍♀️ 3w
Ruthiella I agree with @BarkingMadRead ! It was added to show that Mr. Swenson was a good dad and husband. You‘d think “why didn‘t he pick up the phone “, but I guess the Swensons didn‘t have one, which might not be extraordinary in the 60s and for sure in the 30s, many people would not have a home phone. 3w
CogsOfEncouragement It did give Nancy one more way to be a hero, and added a bit more peril for the girls. 3w
AmandaBlaze I agree with @BarkingMadRead. Joe Swenson becomes a much more enjoyable character when you realize he isn't neglecting his wife and Honey. 3w
Sace Honestly it never occurred to me to think Mr Swenson was a deadbeat. This is Nancy Drew and I guess I just assumed he was ok because generally the “bad guy” is not associated with “good guys”. So for instance, Foxy Felix‘s wife had character flaws. There was no way Mrs Swenson and Honey would be saddled with a deadbeat 3w
Read4life I agree with @BarkingMadRead . I didn‘t mind the subplot at all and liked that it put Mr. Swenson in a better light. 3w
kspenmoll The subplot is in my edition- the mail theft seemed to fit in to me- especially in the light of the Swensons. 3w
mrp27 I agree that in my 62 edition this subplot made sense to the plot as a whole. It made Mr. Swensen a good guy and explained why Honey and her mother were struggling. 3w
lauraisntwilder I don't think it added much and I can't believe no one else would have thought to try her "scheme" already. 2w
Roary47 I agree with everyone it was a needed subplot to make Mr Swenson a good husband and father. 2w
kwmg40 The subplot didn‘t seem out of place at all. However, I hadn‘t read the earlier edition, so I can‘t compare. 2w
DebinHawaii Read the later version & while I‘m not sure the subplot of mail fraud added much, it was fine & tied in well-enough. 6d

1. While there are some differences between the 1932 edition and the 1962 (and later) edition, they are limited in scope, according to Wikipedia.

Which edition did you read? What are your overall thoughts of this, the 7th book in the series? #NancyDrewBR

BarkingMadRead I believe mine was the 1962 version, but I have to double check. I feel like Nancy put herself into less danger in this one, which was a nice change. I did see the guilty party in advance this time, but not the accomplice. 3w
Bookwormjillk I believe I had the 1962 version, but I forgot to check before I returned it to the library. I had the one with the amazing house on fire cover. 3w
DGRachel Pretty sure mine was the 1962 version. I think this one my best my favorite to date. Plenty to make me roll my eyes, but I didn‘t want to throw the book across the room. Progress! 🤣🤣 3w
See All 19 Comments
bookandbedandtea I read the 1962 version. I think this is my favorite so far: Nancy hasn't recently learned a random skill* that just happens to be needed in this book, the relationships between Nancy, Bess, and George feel really solid, and we meet Ned! (*I do get a kick out of the random skills though!) 3w
dabbe I had the later book, and I forgot how much Ned and Nancy flirted at the beginning! I just remembered him as more of a sidekick like Bess and George who happened to be male. They were adorable in this book! 3w
Ruthiella 1962 Version! @dabbe I also was struck by all the blushing Nancy did at Bess and George‘s gentle teasing about Ned. 😊 I only remember him as a fixture (and I likely read them out of order at the time), so this meet cute is fun. 3w
CogsOfEncouragement I've got 1962. I'm glad Ned is in the mix. He proves helpful. I laughed when Nancy sees a house on fire she of course decides she should try to get in there just in case someone needs rescuing. I was relieved when she was unable to. I also laughed when of course Nancy knew some Swedish. 3w
AmandaBlaze I started with the 1962 edition and ended with 1931. The print version was 1962, but the ebook said 1931.
I like this one, especially the proper introduction to Ned Nickerson. I enjoyed the pacing and the mystery. It was another cross-over case between Nancy and Mr. Drew.
3w
dabbe @Ruthiella I read them out of order, too. Basically I read whatever I could get my hands on from the library! 😂 3w
Sace I read the 1962 edition. This one felt faster than some I‘ve read recently. Not sure I can explain it but this one had me hooked pretty quickly. I‘m currently reading The Haunted Showboat and it‘s felt a little slower (then again, I haven‘t had a lot of time to read either). 3w
Read4life I read the later version and enjoyed the pacing of this one. Ned and Nancy were so cute. 3w
kspenmoll I have the 1990 edition. This investigation seems more fast paced, with alot happening. 3w
mrp27 I read the 1962 edition. I liked this one and this one felt a lot less dangerous than the other mysteries. I love how Nancy always has a friend or family that she helps. 3w
lauraisntwilder I have the 1962 edition. I liked this one, for not being quite so far-fetched, but I also kind of love how commonplace crazy things are for Nancy. 2w
Roary47 I have the later version. I pretty much like this book for the same reasons everyone mentioned. I like it because it is more probable than what we have seen. Plus, we have Ned! 2w
kwmg40 I had the 1962 edition. I enjoyed this one and liked seeing the introduction of Ned. 2w
AnneCecilie I don‘t know, I read a translation 2w
DebinHawaii Very late to the discussion party on this one even though I finished it a couple of weeks ago. I read the 1962 version & like everyone, enjoyed meeting Ned! 6d

I feel bad for not liking this one as much as other fellow #PemberLittens did. The second part was so confusing - I‘m not the strongest reader of stream of consciousness understanding, let alone from two perspectives. One has to feel sad for Antoinette whose life did not seem pleasant.

This had been on my to read list for a very long time, so at least I can check it off. #HashtagBrigade #192025 #1966

BarkingMadRead That‘s what I love about Buddy reads, everyone feels differently about the book, and that‘s ok. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I wasn‘t much of a fan either. I didn‘t have any trouble with the stream of consciousness and very little with the shifting POVs… I just found it lacking. 3w

This month‘s IRL book club title, and I was left feeling meh about it. Bernadette is a mail carrier and a widow with a son who is the head high school football coach. She also randomly decides on the 10 year anniversary of her husband‘s death that she has feelings for his bff, who has remained in her and her son‘s life after her husband‘s passing. This helps because he‘s accused of murder, and she feels she must find the killer…despite the ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ …the secrets he seems to be hiding from her. The writing was lackluster, and I rolled my eyes more often than not. It is a cozy mystery, so I suspect the town and characters will develop as the series progresses. I‘ve read worse, but I‘m not going to continue with the series. Should make a good discussion at book club! 3w

PurpleyPumpkin This was a fun read! Looking forward to Wednesday‘s discussion. 😉 3w
AnneCecilie I wasn‘t quite sure if the diary actually was in Swedish since I‘m reading a Norwegian translation, and maybe the translator would have thought that Swedish was difficult enough. Even if we are neighboring countries 3w
Librarybelle @AnneCecilie Interesting! The text says the diary was written mostly in Swedish, with the last entries in English. There are no examples of the pages within the narrative, at least in my edition, so I‘m only trusting Nancy on this. 😂 3w

Combined #BookReport and #WeeklyForecast :

I started off strong last week, completing a few books and continuing with various #buddyread selections. Some books had to go back to the library, so are on pause.

This week, I anticipate completing a couple #buddyread titles and also going through my library book stack - my eyes are way bigger than my belly #somanybookssolittletime .

My IRL book club meets this week too, so I must start that book.

Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for this #ALC !

With elements of mystery & romance & set in Ireland, the story follows a family, the family manor, & a secret that can tear everything from apart. I think I enjoyed listening to the story more, with an Irish voice actress doing the narration. This is the first in a series, so I‘ll be interested to see how the series progresses. A good distraction listen. #52BookClub24 #TheWordSecretInTheTitle

This debut novel has an intriguing premise - the gods of the seasons & a disaster that leaves the world shrouded in autumn. There were parts that had me riveted, but the second third of the book really dragged for me. The MC Tirne seemed to develop an almost repetitive whining tone, and without spoiling too much, I can understand. The ending did not satisfy me either, though the narrative did pick up again the last third of the book. So-so read.

I was not anticipating this #MiddleGrade to be as sad as it was in parts - the cover and synopsis made me think it would be more light and comical. Magical realism plays a role in this as the reader hears from the perspective of tween Ernest and Olivetti the typewriter. It‘s apparent early on that there is a big #ElephantInTheRoom when it comes to Ernest‘s family, and the mother‘s disappearance only adds layers to the situation. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I would have liked to hear Beatrice‘s voice in this, but that‘s really my only concern. This is a book that looks at illness, grief, hope, loneliness, despair, and family. I needed tissues! #BBRC @LibrarianRyan 4w

LibrarianRyan I would never have guessed middle grade by the cover. The book sounds interesting though. And on another note. What is it with typewritters in books lately? It's like they are some new fangled invention. 5d
