This King story is a one-last-job-and-I‘m-done-forever trope, & classic King had to make it with a special twist. I loved the characters & would read another book about all of the “good” ones. I was really surprised at the intricate combat descriptions coming from author with no military background.
Today I had about 100 pages to go & had to finish it!
Great “summer” read!

5feet.of.fury SK books are so crazy because so many start one way & end another. While he was putting together his plan and all the disguises to do The Last Job, I was still hoping there would be a way that he could just stay in the neighborhood & really be a writer. But of course, we have to go do something completely different. But I liked Alice & that 2nd arc too. 4d
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury that ending 😳 I didn‘t see that coming. I was really hoping for a HEA for everyone, but it was a great ending! I wish SK wasn‘t so political in his books, but it‘s not a deal breaker so I guess I‘m putting up with it 🤣 4d

5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead he always has to throw in something against 🍊 since their twitter feud. 😂 I dont mind a political take in general but some of it seems thrown in for no reason other than being petty 😂 4d
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury yes exactly! I get politics being mentioned, but he gets really hateful 🤣 it gives me Springsteen vibes every time 🤣 Bruce loves to make political speeches at award ceremonies 🤣 4d
TieDyeDude I loved the idea of his “dumb“ self, sitting there with his mouth a little slack, while thinking about literature and how to avoid dying 😅
@5feet.of.fury 🍊 🤣
4d
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude yes! And they all fell for it, which is amazing! 4d
PaperbackPirate @TieDyeDude Lol I loved that too. And also that he wasn‘t going to give up reading books to look dumb, just choose “dumber” books. 😂 4d
PaperbackPirate @5feet.of.fury I had the same hopes and dreams, even though I‘ve read enough King to know better by now. 😊 4d
PaperbackPirate I also loved The Overlook Hotel‘s cameo appearance! And the scary topiary animals are back! I was waiting for him to go back to the cabin after throwing the painting into the canyon to find it hanging up again. 4d
BarkingMadRead @PaperbackPirate those Easter eggs were making me giddy! I really wanted a last freaky incident with that painting! 4d

Loved it. Sometimes I don‘t appreciate where King‘s stories meander but I was fully along for the ride. Billy was so endearing. The cliches (one last job) & writer‘s jokes/conventions playing out kept it from feeling too heavy. Even though it was heavy, lots of bad stuff happened. I‘ll be thinking of that ending a while. #losersclub

ShyBookOwl I also struggle with King's meandering. Love The Shining and Misery, though, so maybe this one will be worth a shot 3w
TieDyeDude I thought this was so well done. Even though it meanders, it also shifts genre, so the meandering seems meaningful. Having just left western Colorado, it was nice to revisit in the latter parts of the book :) 3w
5feet.of.fury @TieDyeDude the way the scenery was described was so pretty, I haven‘t been to Colorado in over a decade & could still picture it ❤️ 2w

#12Booksof2023

Favorite read in November was the tagged book—I just liked everything about it. King has many talents (needless to say) but one of them is giving readers reason to root for complex, flawed characters, where the line between good/bad is often blurry/smudged, and nowhere is that more true than in this book.

1. Clue has long been a favorite—with my kids too though my husband thinks it‘s boring. We liven things up by taking every opportunity to tell stories when we ask questions, hunt for clues, & solve the crime. Explanations of the interpersonal relations, revelations about motivations, & descriptions of the murder get quite elaborate. 🔪 🕯️ ☠️

2. Monopoly features prominently in the tagged book which is great.

Started 🦃 Day finishing a book which may well make my Top 10 for 2023. I don‘t think anyone on Litsy needs me to tell them that King knows how to tell a good story. And this one about a hired killer taking on one last job—which he doesn‘t like to think about because something always happens on the “last job”—is a fantastic read. Billy Summers is a character that stays with you, for a multitude of reasons, and his story is very entertaining.

I should not care this much about a hit man…but I suppose that part of King‘s brilliance…

Also, this story is tense as all get out and hard to put down. I suspect it will wind up being one of my favorite King books.

I didn't know anything about this going in: my library friend got a water damaged copy returned, so weeded it and gave it to me. I didn't even read the cover flap until I was about 1/3 through and had no idea where the rest of the book was going. It's an interesting plot, and crosses multiple genres: assassination plot, revenge thriller, veteran war story, love story. It is a winding road, but I enjoyed the ride.

An excellent novel! The character of Bill Summers, an assassin, telling the story of a complex job. Stephen King remains a master of words. The story is so well written that I was engrossed from the first few pages until the very end. The ending caught me by surprise but was excellent. Wow!!

Like its hitman protagonist, this novel has an identity crisis, and as it lurched from one half-baked cliche to another, I smelled a rat: this thing was written to be a lucrative TV miniseries. Warmed-over plotting, a female character who feels disturbingly like wish fulfillment, and King specifying the politics of EVERY CHARACTER. We get it, dude. There‘s a decent novel about trauma and writing buried in here somewhere…bring a big backhoe.

I don‘t know what to think about King‘s latest novel, a one-last-job homage, war story, and straight-up thriller. I can‘t tell if it was any good, or if King‘s writing is good enough to keep me reading no matter the subject matter. What do you all think? Was it good?

Love!! I was excited to see the reference to The Shining, my first and favorite King book. Also references to the area I live in, I always get excited at mentions of my home and my maiden name. The storyline was great. My only complaint was the constant mention of Trump. I know King hates Trump, that's fine, whatever. A time or two would have been ok to keep the timeline relevant, but it felt like it went overboard. #20in4 #Readathon

Not typical King but excellently written. Looking forward to the alleged television series of it — I was rooting for Billy the whole way. My only complaint was the excessive references to The Shining, which didn‘t add anything. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really don‘t have a review for this one yet. A lot of times I felt like large parts of the plot went too fast and other parts of the book dragged. Was there very interesting parts? Yes. But I found myself reading just so I could finish and move on to another book
