Many of the recipes sound and look delicious! The author includes personal notes for each recipe, which I really enjoy. This is the first recipe I tried (#mtcookbook success!), but I have it on display, tempting me to try others!

This is the Brown Sugar Almond Pound Cake that I served at Mother‘s Day brunch with macerated berries and whipped yogurt.

mabell Side note - I think I‘m going to try to find a new bundt pan, as mine is dark “non-stick”, and the long baking time for pound cakes really browns the crust 3d

Loved it! Such a fun installment with the whole Langslow crew on a cruise. Including, poor Rose Noire, who only went to try to protect them from the dangers of the Bermuda Triangle. Of course the cruise deteriorates quickly, and Meg must step in to help keep things on an even keel. 😉

I didn‘t realize when I started this that it was a Christmas mystery, and briefly wished I put it back to save for the holidays. Once I got into it, I was heartily glad I did not! It was a dismal story, with group of unhappy people. The solution to the mystery was clever, however!

I speak highly enough of this cookbook! In the overwhelming world of homemade baby food, ATK created an easy, straightforward path! It begins with the basics of starting solid foods, then kicks off with single ingredient purées, then multi-ingredient “stews” (cod, potato, leek was a favorite), onto finger foods and family meals. Each recipe is clear with extras such as age appropriateness & storage

Well, this was fun! Professor Peter Shandy is down to earth (literally as a botanist 😆) and clever. Set in Maine, Peter is visiting a small town to collect lupine seeds from mysteriously fabulous specimens. While supping at his hotel, the diner at the next table drops face first into the chicken pot pie. Charlotte Macleod has a terrific way with words and a great sense of humor. I will definitely be seeking out more of these!

Isn‘t it fun to have bedtime reading that makes you extra excited to go to bed?

I‘m enjoying this immensely! And how different it would progress in the age of cellphones and internet. Instead of slowing ruminating on King Richard III, getting details bit by bit, all the information would be at Grant‘s fingers with a little googling. I‘m so glad that isn‘t the case 😄

What do a 30 year old jewelry heist, a murder in a columbarium (crypt) and a toucan have in common? More than you would think, as it turns out!

I read the book not long after it came out, so I don‘t remember much about the story. However, I did remember there was a fabulous lemon bar recipe! It is a “cockaigne” recipe from Joy of Cooking, so you know it is extra delicious. We made lemon bars recently, so I tried it again. Different from the traditional style in that they are lemon curd bars - the filling sets soft and creamy like it was topped with lemon curd. Very lemon-y! #mtcookbook

Our friends brought us a gift box of chiles and salsa from New Mexico, so I thought it was a good time to get out this book and try a recipe. Simple and tasty! I love that Donna Andrews writes a Christmas book each year in the Meg series! I quite enjoyed this installment. Michael is directing the Christmas Carol production again, except this time the actor playing Scrooge is a minor big-name, who turns out to be temperamental and rarely sober. As usual, Meg is quite busy - trying to keep the star actor in line and then stumbling across an animal smuggling ring - and a murder!

Chris gave me this cookbook YEARS ago, and I‘m just now trying a recipe! Thanks to #MtCookbook !
Week 5 was Fancy Tuna Melts, with a unique ingredient list:
Tuna
Apples
Mayo
Dijon
Capers and brine
Shallot
Dill
Sun dried tomatoes
Greens
Naan

And marinated mozzarella, which the grocery I went to didn‘t have, so I used regular with oil/herbs drizzled. Trader Joe‘s had one, so we‘ll try it again with the marinated cheese.

Tamra That sounds delicious! I love the flavor combo. Plus, the ease of a sheetpan - can‘t beat a quick dinner. (edited) 3mo

Aimeesue @Tamra Totally depends on your cooking style, I think. I hate emptying out my oven to use it (there‘s so much bread in there!) so I wasn‘t using the recipes much until we got a big toaster oven/air fryer for the countertop. Now I‘ll do a half recipe if the kids aren‘t home for dinner. It‘s on Hoopla, though, so you could check it out to see if there‘s enough in it to interest you. 3mo

Well a #MtCookbook week 4 flop! This is the second or third recipe I‘ve made from this book and for some reason they fail for me!
I thought these would be a fun, quick afternoon project. Whip them up and bake 25-29 min. Not so much! They came together easily, but they baked and they baked and they baked! I check every few minutes (as things can turn from batter to overdone in the blink of an eye), but it just kept coming out batter. I lost track…

mabell Of exactly how long, but they went maybe an hour and 15? It was ridiculous! They didn‘t end up in the trash, as they‘re still edible brownies but not terrific. And it was quite discouraging. Now I‘m nervous about trying out recipes from her pretty holiday book 😆 4mo
Tamra Oh nooooo! I am not much of a baker, so I don‘t have much confidence in this area. This would be really frustrating & disappointing. I don‘t have the book (borrowed), but I copied the Kitchen Sink cookies recipe bc they turned out so tasty. (edited) 4mo
mabell @Tamra It was pretty frustrating! I‘m definitely hesitant to try another one - lots of time, ingredients, etc. to have it go to waste. The kitchen sink sound good, and i know the recipe works for someone else, so that helps! 4mo
See All 11 Comments
TheBookHippie Oh I loathe it when this happens. How frustrating!!! 3mo
mabell @TheBookHippie It really was! And I keep trying to figure out what went wrong! 3mo
janeycanuck Oh no! I've made a few from this cookbook and have had great results. I wonder what is going wrong for you 3mo
mabell @janeycanuck I‘m not sure - it‘s just kooky! I think in this case it may have partially been the pan. I‘m not calling defeat yet 🤣 Which ones have you made? 3mo
janeycanuck @mabell The peanut butter, a couple of the pan-banging, the brown butter choc chip plus a few others I can‘t remember off the top my head. But I did make the cakey brownies today and I did use a smaller pan than called for (8x11 instead of 9x13) and they needed almost twice the amount of time she called for. I haven‘t had that with any of the cookies, though. 3mo
mabell @janeycanuck I‘ll have to try some others. I know my husband would be happy to have the peanut butter! What did you think of the pan banging? 3mo
janeycanuck @mabell OMG, they are amazing. First, they are delicious. Second, they are a great stress reliever when you get to pick the pan up and drop it. I still make the original website chocolate chip one (there are some changes to it in the book) and I don‘t chop chocolate, I just use chocolate chips. If you can find a European style butter, they‘ll be even better. 3mo
mabell @janeycanuck ha, I could see the banging being therapeutic 🤣 She does like to use chopped chocolate, but chips are so much easier. That‘s interesting that you had better results with the European style butter! I noticed she was also very opinionated on butter choice in the introduction. I thought maybe those were my problems - chips & wrong butter -when the cookies didn‘t turn out like the intended style (still ok cookies, but not the right type) 3mo

#MtCookbook Week 2
I had the this out all Dec, planning to try different things through the holidays. Ha! The first recipe I tried this week - Cheese Pie with Chestnut Pastry, Brussels Sprouts, & Hazelnuts
Holiday comfort food, the flavors were a bit reminiscent of Thanksgiving. I had my doubts on the all-butter chestnut crust, but it actually had quite a good crisp, tender crumb. It was more of a creamy Brussels sprout & onion, than a cheese pie.

A Pirate's Night Before Christmas | Philip Yates, Sebastia Serra

Pickpick

This was a super fun find in my collection! The pirates await Sir Peggedy to bring their gifts on the night before Christmas. His sleigh is drawn not by reindeer, but by seahorses. “More sluggish than flounders, his coursers they came … Now Salty, Now, Scurvy! Now Sinbad an‘ Mollie!”

Copyright 1989 by Running Press, this is the tiniest version in my collection! Just 2-3 inches tall, it includes the whole poem in a hardback with a dust jacket! The font and greenery on the text pages is very pretty.

Kicking off #MtCookbook this week with one of my favorites! Ali Stafford has such approachable, delicious recipes. I‘m making the Spicy Jalapeño, Corn and Jack Bread, which I have made before, but as it has been over 6 years, it‘s like new. ?

Also, I got out corn in preparation, but found out the “Corn” is actually cornmeal. ?

mabell @dabbe @Tamra @Aimeesue Fresh bread is so delicious! Especially when it contains cheese 😄 4mo
Tamra @mabell no doubt! I too have a cornbread on my list. Can‘t go wrong. 4mo
intothehallofbooks This looks amazing! I want to look it up and try it myself. Sidenote: I have added a small can of creamed corn to my cornbread before and I really like the flavor and texture. I wonder if that would work here. 4mo
mabell @intothehallofbooks I highly recommend her cookbook! Some of the recipes can also be found on her blog. This is famous no knead peasant bread: https://alexandracooks.com/2012/11/07/my-mothers-peasant-bread-the-best-easiest-... The recipe I just made is a variation - yeast bread plus cornmeal. Adding creamed corn to cornbread is a great idea! 4mo
mabell @Tamra Oooo I look forward to seeing that! 4mo
janeycanuck Oh, that sounds like something my husband would die for! 4mo
mabell @janeycanuck You can never go wrong with cheese bread! 😄 4mo

A fun one! This is an I Spy version, with the full poem printed inside the covers. The book itself is composed of themed images, such as “Not a Creature Was Stirring” and “It Must Be St. Nick”, with lists of items hidden in the photos. I found it very relaxing to do a page before bed 😄

#2 in the Beacon Bakeshop series - A bakery in a lighthouse (slightly haunted by a sea captain) in Beacon Harbor, MI. Lindsay is a Wall Street type turned baker, enjoying life in her new town with her Newfoundland puppy and her boyfriend, Rory. Her Christmas dreams are complicated by the need for baking help and the suddenly announced cookie bake-off. An icky celebrity judge and a murder cap it all off!
Between so-so and a pick ⬇️

mabell I didn‘t love it, but I‘m also pretty picky when it comes to cozies. (Well, any book for that matter 😆) I read it with my sister, and I wouldn‘t be opposed to reading others in the series with her. 5mo

Meg is in charge of coordinating a charity show house of designers (including her mother). Though each designer has his/her own assigned rooms, Meg has her hands full juggling all their requests - and complaints - especially with a particularly nasty, selfish designer stirring the pot! When murder hits the show as well, Meg tries to get to the bottom of it.
Still a pick, but not my favorite of the Christmas ones - rather darker.

Gissy Love the cover😍dark story? Probably good for me 😂 5mo
mabell @Gissy Maybe not dark enough 🤣 Hers are usually quite lighthearted and relaxing - this one not as much 5mo

This version took a unique approach to the pictures accompanying the text. The editors selected a vintage/antique illustration that they thought best fit each stanza, so many different styles (and Santas) are represented. It was published in 1998 by Blue Lantern Studios, and was compiled by Cooper Edens and Harold Darling.

I‘ve put together a few thoughts on options - since I realized instead of “happy fiction” most were “happy non-fiction” 😆 - I went way over 3 on choices!

Don‘t hesitate to say if none of them appeal! I can pull more 😊

Chrissyreadit I realized I read Cotillion 5 years ago- apparently my brain fog strikes again! the good news it will be like reading it for the first time. looking up books you posted now. 5mo
Chrissyreadit I would choose Heyer first. I have not read any of the Corfu books- i need to read the first one for sure so that one would be the only one i do not prefer. I faintly remember Understood Betsy and according to goodreads i have it 5 stars. I know i read it with my kids about 10 or 12 years ago 🤣 5mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit Ha! I did wonder about that 🤣 I haven‘t read the Corfu books either - I didn‘t realize there were multiple! 5mo

mabell It isn‘t letting me tag the other books, so I‘m sorry about making it tough to check them out! 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Oooo these all sound fun, although like @Chrissyreadit I don't like to read books out of order!! Understood Betsy is one of my VERY favorites and it has been a few years since my last read so I am always up to revisit. Strangely, I hadn't thought about finding some happy nonfiction until you mentioned it, and now I'm wondering if we should do a round with that as our focus sometime!! 5mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair I am loving all the ways Happy Fiction or non fiction occurs 5mo
julieclair Ooohhh… Summer at Tiffany has been on my TBR forever, so that would be my first choice! Understood Betsy and Powder and Patch are tied for second. I read A Fine Romance about 6 months ago and LOVED it! A Year in Provence would be a re-read, too. But I‘d be fine with either of them. I agree about the Durrell, so I‘d prefer not to read that one. 5mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @julieclair Thank you for weighing in! I‘ve been trying to think of any others, and I also thought of Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards. So between that one, Powder & Patch, Understood Betsy and Summer at Tiffany, what would be your vote? 5mo
Chrissyreadit powder and Patch will be my first choice but honestly any of them ok. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks So tentatively - Cotillion in January ( @Chrissyreadit ), @julieclair 's pick in February - I can't find the post and apparently didn't write down which book we decided on 😂 - Powder & Patch in March ( @mabell ), and Wind in the Willows for April (me)? Thoughts? 5mo
Chrissyreadit sounds good. 5mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @chrissyreadit I don‘t think we decided on my book…. I kind of lost track of it! 🤦‍♀️ I‘ve just tagged y‘all in a separate post so I won‘t lose it again… 🤪 5mo
julieclair And I like the plan you suggest! 👍 5mo
julieclair If we ever decide to do a non-fiction round, I would suggest 5mo
Chrissyreadit @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @mabell I would also enjoy a nonfiction round 5mo
mabell Thank you for pulling it all together @TheAromaofBooks ! Sounds good @Chrissyreadit @julieclair 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair @Chrissyreadit - Yay!! So Cotillion has 20 chapters. Do you think I should break up the discussion sections on SG into one per chapter, per two chapters, per five chapters...? Just have one big discussion at the end? It's 20 chapters across ~350pgs in my edition, so 15-20pgs/chapter. 5mo
Chrissyreadit I really am ok with whatever you want to try- we can always change it if we want to try something different. 5mo
mabell @TheAromaofBooks Maybe 2-4 chapters? That way we can break it up more? 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @mabell @Chrissyreadit @julieclair - Okay, here is the link!! https://app.thestorygraph.com/readalongs/b9a3dbe6-89c5-4ea8-acb9-4e507782c3ee I set it up for every two chapters and we can see how that works. I forgot to give us a little “introduction“ section, but we can comment on the Ch 1-2 part before you start if you like!! I'm really interested to try this out and see how it works!! 5mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks i‘m struggling to figure out how to join 5mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks do you need to invite us? I love Storygraph but it is not always user friendly (yet) 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I think what may have happened was that I used 2023 instead of 2024 so it thought the Readalong was already over 😂 Please try clicking the link again and see if a Join button now appears!! 5mo
mabell I‘m in! Thanks so much for setting it up, Sarah! @TheAromaofBooks 5mo
Chrissyreadit also… apparently I read Cotillion in 2019!!!due to brain fog it will be a completely new experience 💗 @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Also, I think I am going to try to read 2 chapters a day ish so I can comment as I go along, but I think as long as we all aim to finish by the end of the month, we don't have to stick to a strict schedule!! @Chrissyreadit @mabell @julieclair 5mo
mabell @TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @julieclair I‘ll try to do that too! But best laid plans… 🤣 5mo

mabell @janeycanuck Have you read any of Heyer‘s mysteries? They are my favorite comfort reads! And I always look forward to getting this one out every December - there‘s a good dose of humbug 😄🎄❤️ 5mo
janeycanuck @mabell no, she‘s been on my list for YEARS but I‘ve never picked any up. Suggestions on where to start? 5mo
mabell @janeycanuck Oh my, so many favorites!! If you start with a regency, then Cotillion would be my first choice! For the mysteries, They Found Him Dead is a good one, and No Wind of Blame is fabulous! There‘s also this one, Footsteps in the Dark, Behold Here‘s Poison… The only ones I don‘t recommend are Penhallow (hated that one) and The Unfinished Clue isn‘t a favorite. Blunt Instrument is a little odd too, so I would say one of the other 7 😄 5mo
