Domestic Pleasures is an absolute pleasure to read. Set in 1980‘s New York , with a wonderful cast of characters. It‘s about relationships and life, falling in and out of love , about bringing up teenagers in this NY setting.
I couldn‘t stop turning the pages. Such an enjoyable book. I‘m not a big romance reader , but I had tears for some of the touching moments in this story♥️♥️♥️

squirrelbrain Sounds wonderful! Stacking. 4d

I‘m reading one of the Beth Gutcheon books I bought after reading Still Missing ( which I loved ) with #PersephoneClub. This one doesn‘t have that terrible dark theme, ( not yet , I don‘t think it will ) a softer story of people‘s lives , marriage, divorce, all the complications of love and loss. The writing I do remember ! She‘s a lovely graceful writer.

Tamra I won‘t soon forget Still Missing! 😳 1w
Cathythoughts @Tamra I won‘t either ! It‘s good to be reading her again , she‘s gifted. 1w

One newly washed dog and me ready for an early night … This book is a real page turner. I‘m halfway, not too happy with some of the plot developments… but loving the pure escapism of it all. John Marrs is such a good thriller writer. So glad to have discovered him here on Litsy @BarbaraBB 🙏♥️

Bailedbailed

Oh dear ! #Unpopularopinion This is a bail for me. I just couldn‘t get into it, and the writing wasn‘t for me. There are some great reviews here on Litsy , but I had to bail out.

Tamra That‘s disappointing! I had this one stacked too. 2w
Ruthiella Oh well, on to the next one which will be hopefully a winner! 🤞 2w
Cathythoughts @Tamra It may well work for you. Not for me 😬 Thats where I find the kindle samples are so helpful. I did buy this book though. Hopefully I‘ll find a good home for it. It‘s a pretty book ❤️😁 (edited) 2w

Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Yes. Onwards and hopefully upwards ❤️❤️❤️ 2w
LeahBergen That‘s too bad. I was initially curious about this and then read a bit of it online and decided it might not be for me either! 2w
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I know ! That‘s the way it goes. We do pretty well here on Litsy for books though 😁❤️❤️ I did love the whole idea of this one … anyway .. onwards and upwards. I‘m thinking of Fayne .. not sure I‘m ready for such a long book. I‘m always up for another thriller 🤣 I‘ll have fun deciding X June for our next Persephone x 2w
BarbaraBB Another bail. I hear you 😀. I just started another John Marrs 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

An excellent crime book and so much more , great storytelling and substance. This is my favourite book so far this year. @batsy

Tamra Best of the year? That is high praise - I‘m going to stack it. I hope I can borrow the audio. 2w
batsy Wow! Great review and high praise. So glad this author works for you, Cathy 💜 2w
Cathythoughts @Tamra @batsy It‘s just my favourite kind of book. Literary crime. I‘m in heaven … dark , yes. But all of life is here. I learned a lot about life from this book too. High praise for this one. I must look up more of his writing. (edited) 2w

Cathythoughts @Tamra It‘s so interesting what we read or listen to. I love to read crime, couldn‘t listen. I listen more to books I‘m not too sure about but have to read ( for one reason or another ). I can watch and love a romantic comedy ,but couldn‘t read one 🥱 boring 😑. ❤️ (edited) 2w

Under the Storm: A Novel | Christoffer Carlsson
post image

“Old people say pightle, instead of yard. Isak has recently noticed this, how old people sometimes talk a little different, using words he‘s not used to. He likes the way they sound. Edvard often says that words are one of the links we have to those who are no longer with us. “

I see this as I get older. Words my mother and father used to use , I find myself using them now too.
❤️

lazydaizee The meanings of some words have changed since we started using the internet. Spam used to be a tinned meat product, now it means unwanted emails. 3w
Tamra So true! There are words periodically that pop into my mind from my grandparents, like davenport & soda pop. 😁 It‘s fun to think about and always brings happy memories. They also had quirky words they mispronounced as part of a rural accent, despite my grandmother being a teacher. 😂 3w
Cathythoughts @lazydaizee I know ! When I say .. I must go to the shop for a few messages … my granddaughter is bewildered by my use of the word … What Granny 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3w

sarahbarnes This is on my list after seeing @batsy nominate it for Camp Litsy. 😁 3w
Cathythoughts @Tamra I love those quirky old words , they are part of a way of being and talking … 🥰 your local accent. 3w
Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes Yes ! @batsy put me onto this one 👍🏻😁 3w
Cathythoughts @Tamra Your grandmother 🥰🥰🥰 3w
batsy This is so true! 💜 And @sarahbarnes I knew @Cathythoughts would get to this sooner than I would 😁 and so glad you're liking it, Cathy. 3w
sarahbarnes I may have just put in for a copy at the library @batsy 😁 3w
Cathythoughts Thanks @batsy Of course it all started with Sjowall/Wahloo and then Henning Mankell ❤️ .. but there‘s been nothing to compare sinse. When I saw you recommending this book , I thought I‘d better have a read. Thanks so much Suba ❤️ really enjoying. 😘 3w
batsy @Cathythoughts My pleasure, Cathy! 💜 I should bump him up the list. I too love Sjowall and Wahloo and need to continue the series. 3w
LeahBergen I find that, too! The odd time I‘ll find myself using one of my Nan‘s words or phrases and it makes me laugh. 😆 3w
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I know , and it happens so unconsciously… interesting ❤️ they are part of us. 3w
CarolynM Such a lovely observation 🥰 and so true. I once had a work colleague who, like me, had spent a lot of her childhood with her grandparents. We used to laugh about the old fashioned expressions we both used and the odd looks we got from others when we did. 3w
Cathythoughts @CarolynM It is a lovely observation. All the old fashioned expressions and memories ❤️ 3w
UwannaPublishme Sp true! I have many of those old expressions in my vocabulary now too. 3w

Crime , serial killer , set in Sweden. Good writing and a steady pace all the way through. I guessed the ending , which is most unusual for me 🤣. There‘s a fair bit of philosophising too and nature, which I enjoyed. I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Thanks @batsy for recommending this writer. I‘m off to start another by him now .. andrew61 Great review, Cathy. I wasn't aware of a film , ill try and find it but inevitably doubt that seeing the characters on screen will match my imagination. Mr knight has a Cape , is twirling his moustache , and laughing maniacally as he counts his money. 4w

“They were married on his embarkation leave. Louise made her daughters wedding dress, sitting up all night to finish it. It was of the palest pink china silk; an audacious choice destined to set off her daughter‘s delicate white skin. Instead of a veil , there was a little pill-box hat. Bailedbailed

Boston 1970‘s. Tough times. I can‘t go on with this one. It‘s too hard core. I understand Mary Pat and where‘s she‘s coming from. Her life is tragic. But where‘s she going to ? I won‘t find out as I bailed before half way. I started off engaging with the story. But I found it relentless. I wanted to stage an intervention. Get Mary Pat out of there. Maybe it‘s because of the terrible violence right now in the world, this hit me all the harder.

Suet624 I understand. I read several books recently that just about did me in. I needed to take a break. 1mo
Cathythoughts @Suet624 Yes. ❤️ We are living in desperate times. ❤️ 1mo
Tamra Indeed, it is gritty & raw. 😐 I loved Mary Pat despite her rough edges. 1mo
See All 18 Comments
Cathythoughts @Tamra I really felt for her. But ( in as far as I got in the story ) I couldn‘t imagine how her life could end well. Her tough edges seemed to hide a dying center. Nothing was sacred any more. She loved her daughter. I felt Mary Pat was on a self destructive path ( through no fault of her own ) .. but it was getting worse and so hard to watch. So much pain for one woman. 1mo
squirrelbrain Sounds like a tough read, Cathy. 1mo
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain Yes. I‘d usually be up for it. Something about the MC … ❤️ 1mo
Ruthiella I‘ve read a couple other books by Lehane and they were pretty emotionally exhausting . 1mo

Subdivision: A Novel | J. Robert Lennon

Pickpick

I wasn‘t sure what this was all about, a guest house in the ‘town ‘ called Subdivision. Run by Clara and the Judge , our MC checks in and there is a jigsaw on the table to finish, and a crow that‘s watching. So begins a heady journey. I found it often hard to connect with, but I did develop a compassion for the MC, and I never wanted to bail, and at times I felt moved to tears. A haunting book when you really think about it.

Balibee146 Oh this looks right up my street 👍 2mo

This is the story of a house in the woods where a murder happens. The house remains empty for many years, until a new family move in hoping to repair their relationships and their lives.
At times I wanted to bail because it was really very scary, and because of my intense dislike for a certain character. But I was too caught up in the story, so well written and unputdownable. The house is a character too and also the snow.

BarbaraBB I loved this one for all the reasons you mention 😉 2mo
Tamra Oh, this sounds terrifically eerie! Stacked! 2mo

Books I read recently.
My favorite was Strangers. Set in Tokyo , a recently divorced screenwriter has moved into his studio workplace to live. Immediately atmospheric. Suggestive , thoughtful, a short book and every word is numbered 👌🏻. I loved this one.

North Woods was a beautiful book to read.

Christ on a Bike I enjoyed, but didn‘t love it.

Writing Retreat , ok till 2d half. Then quickly a bail.

Now , it‘s a dark and difficult book to read. The disappearance of a young child. It reads like a true crime book, suspenseful and brilliantly written. Character development is excellent. I thought the mc and her best friend were well drawn characters. I enjoyed the epilogue, it‘s interesting how we look back on friendships in our lives and often see them differently and more clearly. I think of Bob Dylan‘s line
‘Ain‘t it hard when you discover that he really wasn‘t where it‘s at .. ‘
The good writing kept me going until the end , but I felt disconnected from the book. A pick/so-so.

lauraisntwilder Disconnected is a good word for this one. I really enjoyed it, when I read it a couple years ago, but I almost felt like a voyeur. Their lives and mine were so drastically dissimilar. 4mo
Tamra This sounds thought provoking. At least for me, it came as a surprise to discover in adulthood most friendships have seasons. So different than childhood perceptions & expectations. 4mo
BarbaraBB Great review though. I think I felt similar about 4mo

Cathythoughts @lauraisntwilder Yes I really enjoyed it too.. I could identify with being young and all the over thinking and uncertainty of that time. The disconnect was more that I never felt close to the characters at all. Interesting to hear your thoughts 👍🏻 4mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra I know , me too. I suppose we change and our friends change too in different ways … Sometimes we have to let friends go ( that came as a shocker for me I remember) friendships end. But some stand the test of time. Seasons ! As you so wisely say 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 4mo

Wonderful book. Set in 1700‘s , one can identify with this girls struggle through her life , she is fleeing oppression, she has her hopes and dreams. There is immersion in the world at ground level, sensing it , finding home, finding meaning in the soil the stones. Everything is alive…the girl, the trees, the birds, the pulsing earth. I love Lauren Geoff‘s writing.

I‘m going to take a break from Litsy for awhile.

Another beaut from Celia Fremlin , complete with creepy dolls. Clare Erskines daughter Sarah is engaged to an accountant, Mother is very pleased, at last a solid , respectable lad, or is he ? And is his possessive mother pleased?! Taking an interesting look at mothers influences over their children. Couldn‘t put this down.

Kala: A Novel | Colin Walsh
post image

Loving Kala , the characters growing up..grown up. We move back and forth through their lives. This thriller , this crime book, I could quote so much of it. I‘ll quote one character whose life is kind of ‘ perfect ‘ now , and yet he is lonely

‘ Lonely for the warmth of human imperfection‘

The humanity , characters voices intermingle , fused , their desire to be one , the gang, at times I have to backtrack unsure who is speaking
Excellent book

I enjoyed Miracle Creek by Angie Kim.. and I really enjoyed this new book of hers too. Set during covid ( something that didn‘t appeal to me before reading ) But done in a natural , intelligent way. It worked very well with images and layers of meaning around the idea of masks and isolation. An absolute page turner for me, I sank into the lives of this amazing family, whose son Eugene has autism and angel syndrome. A great mystery story.

Tamra Ohhh, will check out! 😁 7mo

Set in 1950‘s Minnesota , in the small town of Jewel. A wealthy citizen is murdered… what follows is some great story telling that takes us into the lives of these town people. Historical fiction and murder mystery rolled into a heartfelt story. I really enjoyed reading this one.

I‘m agreeing with all the other #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub reviews. I enjoyed it ! Yes , the whole Scooby-Doo adventure @batsy 😂. I agree with some it was a bit slow to start , but the start was my favourite part. For a scooby- do , it caused a bit of uneasiness. I love the title of this book , it feels like the cosy blanket covering this cosy mystery with warmth and kindness.

I couldn‘t get a copy of the book. So , kindle it is.
I was very excited as I started this book .. ‘ Thriller of the Year‘ and so it began. I thought it was good , just not what I expected. It turned out differently, more of a thoughtful book. I loved the Scottish island, the weather, the people. A deep reflection on Tommys tragic life. I did enjoy it. I just wanted ( expected ) to be more scared 🙈. A pick 👍🏻 #EuropaCollective

Tamra I‘m happy to see you posting! 😍 Thanks for the heads-up - I won‘t expect it to be a thriller in the scary sense. 8mo

squirrelbrain Great review - I don‘t think I was expecting a thriller but I haven‘t even read the blurb again since we nominated it. I‘m reading it next week. 8mo
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain I imagine you‘ll enjoy it. It‘s a good book. ♥️ 8mo
jlhammar Fantastic review! Yes, I‘m finding it much quieter, much more reflective (and heartbreaking) than expected. I‘m nearly halfway through and really enjoying it so far. Some great writing. 8mo
julieclair I love thoughtful books and great writing. Haven‘t started this one yet, but I expect I‘ll love it. 8mo
Cathythoughts @jlhammar Yes, the writing is great. So readable. ❤️ 8mo
Cathythoughts @julieclair Oh good. I‘m sure you‘ll enjoy it ❤️ 8mo
BarbaraBB I wasn‘t expecting as much of a thriller as you did, so wasn‘t disappointed with the lack of excitement. I loved the quietness of the book 🤍 8mo
Tamra The blurb definitely makes it sound like it‘s going to be more of a traditional thriller. It‘s more of an emotional thriller and a bit of an unresolved one at that since Tom‘s memory is questionable. 8mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra Very good point about Tom. Strange ending … strange book, but I enjoyed it. 8mo

‘What scars of the heart, what hidden wounds of the mind, do not the dreams of even those who feel that their lives have run to a placid and conventional measure, reveal ! ‘

What a beautiful wild story of old age. I feel the years catching up with me, so I was a little afraid of this book at first… but I loved it. I loved the dynamic of the women in the house , fascinating and heart wrenching. #PersephoneClub I think we have another winner here !
