I‘ve been so behind on all of the #bookspins lately that I didn‘t even write out my August bingo until now, and I only did it because of how proud I am of myself about how much I read this month😂

This book is so beautifully written and I completely understand why it won the Newberry award. This is a story about Lily and her family and their Korean heritage, it is about stories and how they can change us and also how it‘s okay to change our own stories we tell about ourselves as we grow and change, at any age. This book is excellent. Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheBookHippie I love this book too. I‘ve gifted it several times. 2y

This is another book I read in March that I enjoyed. I read it for a #PopSugar challenge (Tiger on cover) without knowing much about it. I enjoyed this, which weaves in Korean fairy tales and a modern story about a girl and her aging grandmother. It was interesting and the narrator was great.

Oh wow, delightful and heartbreaking. Reminiscent of A Monster calls. Lily and her mom and her sister move back in with her grandmother. Captures that middle grade thing of knowing there are all these hidden layers and traps in the things adults and older siblings say, but not quite understanding all the layers. A story of a girl who wonders if tiger stories her grandmother told her contain the secret to saving her grandmother.

This did a pretty good job of blending fantasy/magical realism, traditional Korean folktales, and a modern story about growing up and finding your place in a family. I would go ahead and recommend this to a lot of MG readers because I see kids connecting with it from a number of different angles. #LGBTQBookBingo #OrangeCover #BBRC Middle Grade Caper #PopSugar2022 #ABookWithTigerOnCoverOrInTitle @Kenyazero @LibrarianRyan

Lily, her mom, and sister, Sam, move in with her sick grandmother (halmoni). One their way into town they are met (although only Lily can see her) by one of the magical tigers from her Korean grandmother's stories. The tiger claims Halmoni stole something from her and if Lily returns it, her halmoni will get better.

The real life matches nicely with the mystical.

TieDyeDude I just read the tagged children's book, which sounds very similar 3y

I finished this Newbery award winner today. Slow to start but a very emotional, touching ending. Here's a quote! "The sadness fades, yeah. Eventually. But the missing… I don't know if that ever does." A great book about Korean culture, sisterhood and dealing with loss. ❤️?

PatriciaS Great review 👍 I will definitely be reading this and finding a way to utilize this in emotional support teaching students about grief and dealing with their feelings in a healthy manner. 3y

This is a beautiful middle grade story written in magical realism. Lily, her sister Sam, and their mom move from CA to WA to take care of their halmoni, grandmother in Korean. Lily sees a large tiger in the middle of the road and this begins a quest for her.

This book made me cry. At first I didn't realize that the story was going to be dealing with the grandmother having an illness. I was very much pulled in by the magical atmosphere. I think the author did a great job weaving reality and fantasy so you weren't quite sure where one ended and the other began.

Finally getting around to those final thoughts! 😆 #buddyread

This was not my favorite Newbery medalist, but still a very good, solid book, worthy of the award. I ended up doing most of the book on audio, but still managed to mark a few great quotes. This was one of my favorites (pg 257). Did you have a favorite, @smilingshelves ? I know you said you were in need of a tin of book darts!

Now just to decide which Honor to read next & when! 😊

smilingshelves That is a great quote! I actually ended up ordering a tin of book darts. 😄 They arrived Saturday, so too late for this book, but they're all ready for the next one! 3y
smilingshelves I really enjoyed this book, especially Lily's character. I loved the way she saw the people around her, and I loved watching her grow and find her voice. As an adult, this was a powerful story. But honestly, I don't think I could convince many kids at my library to pick it up. That often seems to be the case with Newbery winners (except for the graphic novel, of course). I guess I'd rather have the award go to quality literature than... 3y

smilingshelves Curious as to your opinion - how real was that tiger? 3y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves that‘s a good question! I‘ve been thinking about it, and I‘m still not sure! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Definitely don‘t think there was a literal, physical Tiger, but they definitely saw something. Was almost wondering if Harmoni seeing it was an effect of her illness, but Lily saw it too. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Seems like an element of magical realism of sorts. 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I haven't quite figured it out, either. I assumed Lily was imagining it, but then during the rainstorm when Harmoni was in the hospital, the tiger walked in front of them and cleared the rain. So it had to be a bit more than imagination. We'll probably never know exactly what the author intended, and that's also probably the point! 3y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves So... what and when should we read next? 😊 3y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m pretty flexible! I can do the Space one anytime since I have the Kindle edition. At the moment, I have all of the other three out from the library as well. So maybe whichever you can get hold of next? — and if you can get any of them easily, take your pick! If monthly isn‘t too rushed for you, we could aim for mid-March since we did mid-February for our last one? More time in between is also fine with me, if you‘d prefer. 😊📚 (edited) 3y
smilingshelves Mid-March sounds good. How about All Thirteen next? That's the one I'm probably least excited about. (Although I'm fully prepared to be wowed!) 3y

smilingshelves She left her readers kid lit Easter eggs! 😃 3y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I love it! Also, feel like these tiger stories must have parallels to Halmoni‘s real life. I think I‘ll need to go back and re-read them to figure out exactly who is who in the stories vs. real life. I‘m seeing a lot of themes of family and navigating two cultures etc, but I don‘t think I have it all completely straight just yet. 🤔 (edited) 3y

Above quote from Pg. 37 #buddyread Switched to the audiobook to go on a walk! Just finished chapter 8.

Fun fact #1: The audiobook narrator (who surely is more trustworthy and knowledgeable than I) pronounces Halmoni closer to “Harmony” — always learning something new!

Fun fact #2: this line was SO reminiscent of ‘If You Give a Mouse a Cookie‘ to me, especially hearing it read aloud. Can you tell how many times I‘ve read that book?! 🤣

smilingshelves I also thought of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie! 😂 I'm glad you shared that about the pronunciation, because that's definitely not how I was saying it in my head! 3y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves it was not how I was pronouncing it in my head for the first few chapters either! And so funny you noticed the same thing about that line 🤣 #momlife 3y

When Lily‘s family moves in with her Halmoni she encounters a giant tiger. A tiger no one else can see, and one who insists that her Halmoni stole something from the tigers and they want it back.

This modern story based around Korean folktales tells the tale of family, love, strength, and a girl who finds her voice. I loved, loved, loved this story!

I hadn‘t heard of this until it was awarded the Newbery medal & it‘s great! It‘s about grief, sisters, friendship and the power of stories.
Her older sister calls her a QAG—Quiet Asian Girl—but Lily learns that being invisible is perhaps NOT her superpower. She does, however, see invisible things. A lovely blend of Korean mythology with relationship dynamics within a contemporary American family of mixed ethnicity. #audiobook read by Greta Jung.

The Newberry Award winner. Not what I thought it would be. I‘ve not even heard of this book.

I was really hoping it would be Enron divided.

KathyWheeler Were you at ALA? Did you see Amanda Gorman and Jill Biden? (edited) 3y
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler No and No. There were a few sessions that were open to everyone (mostly book releases) that I signed up for. My department rarely gets to go to ALA because most of it does not pertain to what we do. 4th floor normally sends 3-5 people. But it was all virtual. They didn't even ask if anyone wanted to go.. 😞 3y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan I went this year even though it was virtual because it will probably be my last ALA. I don‘t think I‘ll renew my membership, and I will probably retire soon. 3y
See All 7 Comments
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler I haven‘t paid for my membership since I changed libraries. It‘s not as relevant as it used to be for government information. But I still love their conference. I go when ever it‘s in Chicago even if I have to pay for it myself and sleep at my aunts. 3y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan They also don‘t have as much for academic libraries, especially in collection management, as they do for public libraries. I get more out of the Charleston Conference. I like to go when it‘s in New Orleans because I‘m only 2 hours away and I love NO. 3y
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler there is not really a conference for what we do. Our boss likes to pretend we are an academic but we‘re not. We belong to an academic system but are one of 5 special libraries. The worse is when we have to sit through webinars an education sessions that do not apply to us. Tomorrow is managing registrar systems and the transfer of info between those systems and the circ system. But at least I can multi task. 3y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan I hate that too. I‘ve had to go to webinars on instruction. When I was in Reference, that was fine; now, I just read email or do something else while the webinar is going on. I‘ve never had to go to something as clearly irrelevant as the one you‘re having to sit through though. (edited) 3y

"...??? ????? ?? ?????? ???? ???? ?? ???."⁣

An adorable middle grade story about a young Korean girl & her family. They move to go live with their grandmother, who is called Halmoni in Korean. I love the incorporation of magical realism through the old family stories that Halmoni has told the young girl growing up. Keller does an excellent job channeling the feelings of a young child trying to find out who she is.
