I‘ve been so behind on all of the #bookspins lately that I didn‘t even write out my August bingo until now, and I only did it because of how proud I am of myself about how much I read this month😂

This is a Newbery award winner. This book is about a little girl named Lily. Her family and her have to move in with her grandma because she is sick, so her family is taking care of her. She realizes that there is a magical tiger that came from one of the books and claims her grandma stole something from them. The tiger offers the grandmothers health back, but he is not who he seems. Lily must find a way to stand up to him.

This book is a winner of the NewBerry Medal! This book is the story of a younger girl who goes on an adventure/quest to unlock things and he goal is to save her grandmother!

A good book/interesting read.

This book is so beautifully written and I completely understand why it won the Newberry award. This is a story about Lily and her family and their Korean heritage, it is about stories and how they can change us and also how it‘s okay to change our own stories we tell about ourselves as we grow and change, at any age. This book is excellent. Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is another book I read in March that I enjoyed. I read it for a #PopSugar challenge (Tiger on cover) without knowing much about it. I enjoyed this, which weaves in Korean fairy tales and a modern story about a girl and her aging grandmother. It was interesting and the narrator was great.

Oh wow, delightful and heartbreaking. Reminiscent of A Monster calls. Lily and her mom and her sister move back in with her grandmother. Captures that middle grade thing of knowing there are all these hidden layers and traps in the things adults and older siblings say, but not quite understanding all the layers. A story of a girl who wonders if tiger stories her grandmother told her contain the secret to saving her grandmother.

This did a pretty good job of blending fantasy/magical realism, traditional Korean folktales, and a modern story about growing up and finding your place in a family. This book is about a girl who goes to visit her halmoni (grandmother) who is sick. she meets a tiger along the road, and the tiger might just be the key to curing halmoni. this book has heart-felt messages, and I absolutely loved it, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy reads that hit you in the feels!

Lily, her mom, and sister, Sam, move in with her sick grandmother (halmoni). One their way into town they are met (although only Lily can see her) by one of the magical tigers from her Korean grandmother's stories. The tiger claims Halmoni stole something from her and if Lily returns it, her halmoni will get better.

The real life matches nicely with the mystical.

I finished this Newbery award winner today. Slow to start but a very emotional, touching ending. Here's a quote! "The sadness fades, yeah. Eventually. But the missing… I don't know if that ever does." A great book about Korean culture, sisterhood and dealing with loss. ❤️?

"I don't. But I believe in me. When you believe, that is you being brave. Sometimes, believing is the bravest thing of all."

I love starting a new book and having that feeling wash over me; the feeling of 'this one is going to be special.' I'm getting those vibes from this book! I just started it and I can't put it down!

This is a beautiful middle grade story written in magical realism. Lily, her sister Sam, and their mom move from CA to WA to take care of their halmoni, grandmother in Korean. Lily sees a large tiger in the middle of the road and this begins a quest for her.

This book made me cry. At first I didn't realize that the story was going to be dealing with the grandmother having an illness. I was very much pulled in by the magical atmosphere. I think the author did a great job weaving reality and fantasy so you weren't quite sure where one ended and the other began.

This was not my favorite Newbery medalist, but still a very good, solid book, worthy of the award. I ended up doing most of the book on audio, but still managed to mark a few great quotes. This was one of my favorites (pg 257). Did you have a favorite, @smilingshelves ? I know you said you were in need of a tin of book darts!

Now just to decide which Honor to read next & when! 😊

I'm only on page 13, and I've already decided I desperately need book darts for this book. Too bad I don't have any! I'll have to remedy that soon. 🙂

For winning the Newbery, there wasn‘t much here. I didn‘t feel the characters or the themes were very well developed. Just so-so.

When Lily‘s family moves in with her Halmoni she encounters a giant tiger. A tiger no one else can see, and one who insists that her Halmoni stole something from the tigers and they want it back.

This modern story based around Korean folktales tells the tale of family, love, strength, and a girl who finds her voice. I loved, loved, loved this story!

I hadn‘t heard of this until it was awarded the Newbery medal & it‘s great! It‘s about grief, sisters, friendship and the power of stories.
Her older sister calls her a QAG—Quiet Asian Girl—but Lily learns that being invisible is perhaps NOT her superpower. She does, however, see invisible things. A lovely blend of Korean mythology with relationship dynamics within a contemporary American family of mixed ethnicity. #audiobook read by Greta Jung.

I‘ve got about 20 layers of fears stacked over my heart.

The tiger “rolled her terrible eyes and gnashed her terrible teeth.” I love all the allusions to other stories in this Newbery award-winner.

An adorable middle grade story about a young Korean girl & her family. They move to go live with their grandmother, who is called Halmoni in Korean. I love the incorporation of magical realism through the old family stories that Halmoni has told the young girl growing up. Keller does an excellent job channeling the feelings of a young child trying to find out who she is.
