This was a beautiful story about a mother and child who immigrated to the US and how it was hard at first with them not speaking the language and not knowing anyone. But then they found the library.

Dreamers By Yuri Morales is a B about the author herself. Its an extraordinary book of the realistic struggles she faces on a journey to find happiness/freedom. As a First-generation American, this story really spoke to me because of how I can relate it to my family. This book is about a young mother and her child who leave Mexico in hopes to find better opportunities in a new place. She then finds a public library that opens a new world for her.

Viviannef UDL 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge. It is important to include background knowledge to students who may not be familiar with immigration. ESOL strategy 3 Encourage self-talk (positive thinking) which is important within this story as she expresses that she is still able to overcome the hardships by staying positive through dark times. 4y
Viviannef https://youtu.be/CAiTFJaNiD8 - This video from the Author Yuri Morales provides more insight from the author herself for writing this book and the symbols/drawings she includes within her book. #ucflae3414su20 4y
Viviannef How could I forget to mention it‘s award? This book also won the Pura Belpre award!! So amazing! Would recommend everyone to read this book! 4y
bsiqueira I have heard such great things about this book, I need to get my hands on it!! I love that you provided a video about the author, this is important for students to know this information. Great post! 4y
DrSpalding The video from the author is insightful! You can certainly use these videos to enhance understanding of authors purpose for writing stories. This is a beautiful award winner. Once again, you have selected high-quality books that I hope you will add to your classroom library to benefit your students. 4y

“Dreamers” is a (B) book, it was written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales. It has won the 2014 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award and was on the New York Times Best Seller list. Dreamers” is the personal story of the author‘s journey to the U.S with a small child.#ucflae3414su20

dbears1 She arrives in a new country scared and unable to communicate but she persevered. Accidently, she found herself inside a library and her world is opened. The contrast of colors and details will keep you looking at the pictures just a little longer. This is a great RA for students K-5. 4y

gpraytor We used this book in one of my other classes and it is so beautifully written and appropriate for the age group you selected! 4y
JoslynB Your activity immediately piqued my interest because I love integrating art into the classroom alongside literature. I think students will love to apply what they learned into artwork, which can be used to encourage peer review or discussion. 4y
DrSpalding Arts integration is a valuable extension activity. This book has a current and valuable message to share with students. Please use books as mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors in your future classroom. 4y

This is a book about a mother and child's journey from Mexico to the United States. It is a biography of the author Yuyi Morales. It highlights the struggles of being an immigrant and moving to a new country. The mother and child finds a safe place in a public library. They did not have to worry about a language barrier there. Eventually it is where they learned to read, write, and speak in English. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP This is a good pick for an author study, because students can learn about the author by reading this autobiography. Yuyi Morales is also connected to many other books that celebrate the Latin culture.
ESOL: Incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum (this book discusses the Mexican culture and immigrant experience)
UDL: 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (USA is a country many immigrate to)
4y
ShardaeP Website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAiTFJaNiD8 (the author discusses her life experiences and the explanation behind symbols in her book) 4y
Tabitha_H I love the cover of this book. This would be a great book to read when exploring other cultures. UDL 7.2 is perfect. 4y
DrSpalding This is an excellent post that incorporates all elements of the rubric. Using a video by the author is a wonderful resource to include in this post. I currently have a group doing a third grade social studies unit plan on Mexico and this book is being used! 4y

In this autobiography, Yuyi Morales shares her story of leaving her home and moving to the U.S. with her son. The text is very simple for children to understand and read along: the book offers an after note on why she came to the U.S. as well. The book uses illustrations to convey the story which can be easier for younger children to follow along and even more interesting to see real life pictures at the end!

Dreamers by Yuyi Morales is an Audie Award for Young Listeners book. This biography is about the travels of a young Mexican mother and child to escape the Mexican government and has won a Pura Belpré Illustrator Award. The colorful story goes into detail about the struggles the two faced on their quest for freedom and happiness. This book would be great for a whole group lesson to educate about immigration! #ucflae3414f19

Shannyblake I think this book would be beneficial as a read aloud and discussion/response assignment. A lesson plan I found to match well with it was https://sharemylesson.com/teaching-resource/dreamers-yuyi-morales-book-discussio.... This download guides teachers to mind opening questions they can ask their students after reading the book.
4y
Shannyblake The ESOL strategy that matches this book is 11. Place language in meaningful context and the UDL Guideline I found to be beneficial is Vary demands and resources to optimize challenge (8.2)

This award winning book was full of beautiful, colorful illustrations that are such joys to look at. This story talks about the ways in which books, literature, writing, and story telling can be used to make messages heard and become one with the world even if you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. It is a positive and lighthearted book about starting a new life

“One of the most engaging elements of Dreamers is the artwork created by Morales. Using Mexican fabric, metal sheets, childhood drawings, as well as leaves and plants, Morales creates multi-media artwork that blends her Mexican and American lives together. Equally vibrant and surreal, the details in the art provide readers with links between the U.S. and Mexico.” https://wowlit.org/on-line-publications/review/xi-4/8/ #Picturebook

#bbrc #a2z Letter D - Again, couldn‘t pick just one!

This #picturebook deserves all the awards, and should have received a Caldecott! This is Yuyi‘s story of immigrating to the United States with her young son, and how public libraries became a beloved place to her when she was trying to navigate life in a new country. The illustrations pay tribute to creators & authors of all backgrounds. It‘s a beautiful book.

Dreamers by Yuyi Morales is an autobiography picture book that won the Pura Belpre award. This book is about a woman who traveled from her home in Mexico to the US with her son, Kelly. The story tells about her difficult passage and the issues she overcame. This website provides interactive read alouds and comprehension charts: . For this book I could use the UDL 3.1, “activate or supply background knowledge”. I could activate their background

Kcallihan knowledge on not only the geography of Mexico but also their culture. The ESOL strategy I could use would be #17, “provide contextual support through models”. I could provide a map of where the main character began her journey and demonstrate how she came to America. #lae3414sp19 5y
Kcallihan For this book I would do an Author study (AS) because since it‘s a biography, it would help the students to know a lot about her. 5y
DrSpalding I am adding this book to my stack! Great idea to perform and author study. You are using a lot of teachers pay teachers when you should use resources from the publisher or author. 5y
