Jason Dessen has settled into life as a professor at a small college, has a lovely wife and son. His trip to buy ice-cream one evening changed his live forever. He must‘ve been thinking #whydidithavetobeme ?

Mdargusch Oooh. This sounds very intriguing! 1y
emilyhaldi Lol. He definitely was thinking that! 😂 I love this book! 1y

Mdargusch Very well played! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1y
Cathythoughts Very good. I now have a copy of the tagged book , in my possession... due to your influence ! Thankyou (edited) 1y
Billypar @Cathythoughts Very nice! I think you will enjoy it- quite different than Blazing World, but it shares in common a focus on the NYC art world, and the beautiful writing of course. 1y

#abbainaugust #whydidithavetobeme

It sucks to be the chosen one. No, honestly! It‘s a common trope particularly in fantasy. Text above from https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne
Garion from The Belgariad is one of my favourite characters who regularly bemoans #whydidithavetobeme

Mdargusch Nice! 👍🏼 1y
emilyhaldi Very clever!!! 1y
Reviewsbylola This one is new to me. Great choice! 1y
Cinfhen Great choice 🏆 1y

Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland | Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Kevin Sullivan, Mary Jordan
post image

The kidnappings of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus were so horrifying that I‘m sure each of them thought constantly #whydidithavetobeme ? I‘ve visited the site of the house where they were held captive for a decade, but it was torn down shortly after The girls escaped so now looks like the image from google maps- a small park of sorts. #ABBAinAugust

Mdargusch I‘m sure they did think that! Good one. 1y
emilyhaldi Love that you visited the house 😂😂😂😂 1y
Reviewsbylola One of the craziest stories ever. And pls don‘t forget the real hero of the day, my boy Charles Ramsay. You didn‘t happen to catch him on the porch next door eating some ribs? 1y

Meredith3 @Reviewsbylola OMG we talked to the guy that lived in the same house Charles Ramsey lived in. Unfortunately he moved out not too long after they escaped and the arrest. 1y
Meredith3 @emilyhaldi I went twice and both times were en route to the airport to pick you or @AnnieD up 😹 1y
Reviewsbylola Lol of course you did. 😂😂 wonder where Chaz is now. 1y
Hollie Great choice for the prompt...what a sad story. 1y
Cinfhen I remember this story playing out on the news. What a nightmare for those girls. 💔💔💔 1y
BarbaraBB I read about this horrible story at the time but forgot about it later on. Thanks to your post I spent the last two (!) hours on the internet... so now I know all about it, including Charles Ramsay... 😂, so @Reviewsbylola you might like this: https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/e-team/charles-ramsey-opens-up-on-his-life-f... Meredith3 @BarbaraBB hahaha fun stuff! Thank you!! 1y
Meredith3 @Cinfhen so terrible, but they all seem to be doing well these days! 1y
Meredith3 @Hollie thank you! 1y

The Couple Next Door | Shari Lapena

I started this one on audio earlier this year as I‘d lent the physical book to my mother. My borrow ran out before I finished and I never renewed despite being invested in the story. My mother is finished and since the book is at the cottage I‘m retaking possession to finish it.

This thriller is about a missing baby, and I‘m sure the mother is thinking #whydidithavetobeme that this happened to?

emilyhaldi Ooohhh I‘m interested in that drink you‘re having 😛 looks like something @Meredith3 needs to know about! (edited) 1y
Melissa_J @emilyhaldi @Meredith3 OMG it is so good. Vodka cocktail with lemon, lime and grapefruit with a hint of mint. Unfortunately, it‘s only available in Ontario and a few other provinces. But if you happen to cross the border be sure to visit an LCBO and pick it up. It‘s my favourite 😊 1y
Meredith3 @Melissa_J @emilyhaldi that drink sounds delightfully refreshing! Do you or have you drank Woody‘s? 1y

Reviewsbylola Good pick! I‘ll be curious to see what you think once you finish this one. 1y
Mdargusch That drink! 😋 1y
Cinfhen Great pick but I‘m really curious about your canned drink???? Damn, I need a trip to Ontario 😋🙌🏻 1y

When Jake is first approached by an acquaitance about changing the history of the world he thinks “#WhyDidItHaveToBeMe?”.

Is this a perfect book? No. Is this an entertaining book? YES! It was a real page turner for me, and all though it was too long, and I would have liked a more narrow focus on the historical events, I couldn‘t stop reading it!

trioxin_sematary Loved it!! 1y
vivastory Are you on Goodreads? I wanted to message you about the Les Misérables br 1y
ephemeralwaltz Same!! I couldn't put this one down either. You finished it so quickly! 1y

Kalalalatja @vivastory I am, I think my url is Goodreads.com/Kalalalatja, if I remember correctly 😄 1y
Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz The perks of being unemployed. Plus, it got easier since it was so readable! 👌 1y
BarbaraBB Wow, you‘ve read this book so fast!!! 1y
emilyhaldi Yes, agree with you 💯❗️ 1y
Meredith3 I‘ve been meaning to read this! 1y
Reviewsbylola So glad you liked this more than Cindy! I couldn‘t put it down. 1y
Mdargusch I‘ve heard this is a really good one! 1y
Cinfhen Great choice and wonderful review!! I‘m glad u enjoyed it. @Andrew65 was right, how boring it would be if we all loved the same books... this book has its merits but the negatives outweighed the positives for me. So, what‘s up next!?? 1y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB it just flew by for me! 💨 @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola I‘m glad I ended up in your camp! It is just too many damn pages if you don‘t like the book 😅 @Meredith3 @Mdargusch It felt a real Summer book where you just immerse yourself into another time and place 👌 1y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen so true! And for me, I think it might also have been the timing. I needed a pageturner 😄 and @vivastory and I are doing a br of Les Miserable in sep, but I‘m guessing that might be too chunky for you? 😉 1y
TrishB Not my fav King but I did love it 👍🏻 my kids read this too and loved it! 1y
BarbaraBB Les Mis is sooo good, I did buddyread that one on LibraryThing and it‘s perfect for buddyreading. Hope you‘ll enjoy it! 1y
Cinfhen Thanks @Kalalalatja but I‘m passing on les mis 😘 I‘ve seen the show a few times and that‘s good enough for me 💗😀 1y
Kalalalatja @TrishB what is your fave King? I‘m not going to sprint out to get another, but I might pick up another at some point 😄 1y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB that‘s great to know! I‘m getting more and more excited about reading, but it is also a little daunting 😅 1y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen haha, I thought you might say that 😄 but we‘ll have to see about another buddy read in the future! 👏 1y
Mdargusch I just don‘t know how I feel about this being nonfiction 🤔 1y
TrishB My fav is The Stand! It‘s another chunkster though and very wordy! 1y
Kalalalatja @TrishB nice, I‘ll be sure to check it out once I decide to try a King again 👍 1y
Kalalalatja @Mdargusch nonfiction? It is historical fiction, I‘m pretty sure King is incorrect in some places 😊 1y
Mdargusch Sorry, I meant fiction. 😂 1y
Kalalalatja @Mdargusch haha, makes more sense 😂😂 1y

A young Governess arrives at an old English estate for her new job caring for Miles and Flora. Once she notices the presence of a ghost, surely she was thinking #whydidithavetobeme who was sent to this haunted family! The shocking ending of this story will leave you hanging and wondering if there is indeed a ghost present, or perhaps something more sinister...

This reminds me that I need to get back to #SerialReader again!

Cinfhen Nice!!! I‘m back on @SerialReader with Silas Marner but it‘s soooo boring 1y
Leniverse @Cinfhen Silas Marner has a lot of literary merit. It's perfect for university essays. Lots to analyse. But it's terribly boring, yes. 😂 1y
Reviewsbylola I wish I remembered this one more! 1y

Mdargusch Stacking! Great blurb! 👍🏼 1y
myellenbee I've read this book several times and it always creeps me out. Classic horror. 1y
BarbaraBB This was such an unexpected scary book for me! 1y
Meredith3 Oooh ghosts! 👻 1y
ValerieAndBooks Looks like a good one to read during Halloween/fall !! 1y
Cinfhen THANK YOU @Leniverse 😘I feel vindicated 💕I can‘t go on... @Reviewsbylola suggested a different female author using male pseudonym so I‘m bailing on George Eliot 😀 1y
Leniverse @Cinfhen I feel like I should add that I loved Middlemarch, and quite liked The Mill on the Floss, so I don't advocate giving up on George Eliot altogether! 1y
emilyhaldi @Leniverse I swear I will read Middlemarch some day!!! @Cinfhen I will not be attempting Silas Marner anytime soon 🙅🏻‍♀️ 1y
Cinfhen Too late @Leniverse I‘ve 💯moved on 😊 1y
Leniverse @emilyhaldi @Cinfhen Middlemarch is forever. It will be there when you are ready for it. 1y
MaGoose Absolutely loved The Turn of the Screw. When this book was discussed in English courses in college, the profs (usually male, sorry you guys out there), said that the governess was an unreliable narrator. I think there's something else going on besides that. 1y
emilyhaldi @MaGoose yes for some reason, to me the story is almost even creepier if the cause of the terror is the narrators unreliability / insanity!! So I kind of wanted that to be the cause... perhaps bc it‘s more realistic (and therefore creepy in a relatable way) than the ghost story. 😬😬😬 1y

Jaws | Peter Benchley
post image

Joe Hill believes that an extra from Jaws is the Jane Doe known as the Lady in the Dunes. Color me tantalized!

“When faced with grotesque, inexplicable tragedies,” he said in the WaPo article, “one of the ways that human beings master their own anxiety and concern is by trying to reduce it to a crossword puzzle, and if you have the right inspiration, you can bring order back to chaos.”

vivastory I hadn't heard about this. Fascinating! 1y
Meredith3 Very interesting! 1y

#AbbaInAugust Day 7: #WhyDidItHaveToBeMe must have been Wilde‘s battle cry when he lost the faith of people and got thrown in jail for his sexuality. This photo of his bust was taken from the Dublin Writers Museum. I love the tagged book, alongside Importance Of Being Earnest. I recall having an entire notebook just filled with quotes from these two books.

Reviewsbylola So sad. 😭 1y
Cinfhen Just picked up tagged book for free from Kindle ❤️ 1y

Murder in My Hometown | Rebecca Morris
post image

#whydidithavetobeme Dick Kitchel was a senior in high school in 1967 when he disappeared one night after a party. His badly beaten body was pulled from a local river a few days later. The case remains unsolved. Author Rebecca Morris was also a senior at Dick‘s school when he was killed. The murder was pretty straightforward and the suspected culprit almost undoubtedly guilty. The flow of the book could have been more cohesive though. #abbainaugust

Meredith3 Aw man I was excited for this when I first started reading your review until I got to the end 😹💀 1y
emilyhaldi I knew you‘d come up with a solid murder mystery for this prompt 👏🏻 1y
Reviewsbylola The book is broken up in three sections. The murder, “the aftermath”, and modern day. The aftermath section is really just 1968 and the end of senior year. It had nothing to do with Dick‘s murder. It was still good, but unexpected. @meredith3 1y
Mdargusch Poor guy. 😢 1y
