I was about to say, "Why is there no Billy Wilder biopic?!" but I googled it to make sure I hadn't overlooked one. It looks like there is one to be released starting Christoph Waltz as Wilder, based on a Jonathan Coe book!

vivastory I mean, Billy Wilder AND Peter Lorre were roommates? I can't wrap my head around that. 2y
Billypar Now I'm just picturing various Peter Lorre introductions to the apartment in that wonderful voice of his. E.g., "As I mentioned in the ad, there are to be no parties or loud noise after 9 pm. If you look in the cupboard there you will see some of the varieties of soups that we would be sharing..." 2y
vivastory @Billypar Haha, this is pretty much what I was picturing too 2y

batsy That's a fabulous piece of detail about him and Lorre. Also thinking about how Hollywood as such was at one point possibly a place where outsiders and working class people could feel like they had a chance at something. Fast forward to 2022 and it's largely nepotism and children of celebrities. 2y
vivastory @batsy This is so very true. There's a lot of talk in this interview about his meeting with Lubitsch & their subsequent collaborations. Formation of Hollywood is unfathomable without the work of writers/directors & immigrants. So much of what people tend to think of as American cinema was established by non-American actors/directors OR American actors who made names for themselves overseas. One of my favorite movies of the yr is the 29 Pandora's 2y
vivastory @batsy (cont) Box starring Louise Brooks. I had NO idea that Brooks hometown is literally less than 3 hrs from where I live. 2y

Over the past couple of weeks I've found it difficult to focus on reading with everything that's been happening. One comfort as I doomscroll has been the Art of Fiction tweets from Paris Review. A few of my recent favorites:
"Fiction is freedom" (Sontag)
"I hate almost all rich people, but I think I'd be darling at it" (Parker)
"I am not very bright or very witty or very inventive after the sun goes down" (T Morrison)

From the Paris Review. Saw it on Instagram. Apparently today would be Elizabeth Hardwick's birthday. (She was born in 1916.)

Okay, this is getting a huge feminist eye roll from me because there certainly aren‘t women out there writing amazing women characters. 🙄🙄🙄 We just wait for men to do it. 😒😒😒

silentrequiem Are you kidding me?!?!? 5y
Hestapleton Or the troubling phenomenon of men writing thrillers under women‘s (or gender ambiguous) names to sell more books. 5y

Lizpixie What about Karin Slaughter? Elizabeth George? Tess Gerritsen? Just to name a few.😡 5y
Megabooks @Hestapleton you mean like this one? 5y
Hestapleton @Megabooks Yup! And Riley Sager! Of FINAL GIRLS and the tagged 5y
Megabooks @Lizpixie I‘m not a big reader of thrillers, but when I did the #BOTMchallenge, I met a new female mystery/thriller writer pretty much every month. Not to mention titans like Dame Agatha, who was doing it before it was cool. 5y
julesG Mega eye-roll. 5y
GlassAsDiamonds I‘m a fan of Child but even I think that‘s a stretch...: 5y
Weaponxgirl Remember it‘s not legit until a man does it 😒 5y
Megabooks @julesG Yes! 😡 5y
Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds I‘ve never read him. This certainly didn‘t improve my chances. 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl That‘s what Caitlin Moran says. (I think she‘s a joke of a feminist because she basically said that.) 5y
Bookcation74 Seriously?!? 5y
Bookcation74 Pathetic 5y
BibliOphelia @$&?#!!! 5y
QueenJen Yep, it's a mega eye roll from here too 5y
Megabooks @BibliOphelia 🤬🤬🤬 5y
Megabooks @QueenJen For sure! 🙄🙄🙄 5y
Weaponxgirl @Megabooks she wasn‘t being sarcastic? I‘d be so sad to lose Caitlin moran as she is one of the few female voices that came from a working class background in the uk mainstream. 😭 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl I stopped reading her nonfiction because she seemed to me to be saying, “If the guys aren‘t doing it, then that isn‘t what the women should be doing.” As a woman, I don‘t want to be a man or feel like my decisions as a woman should be based on anything other than my own opinions, regardless if it‘s what men or women are doing. It‘s not a positive message to me. That said, I do like her fiction. 👇🏻 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl Maybe I misunderstood her, but if I didn‘t, then her message is not for me. I can understand liking other parts of her message. She‘s definitely an influential voice, just not for me. 5y
Weaponxgirl @Megabooks sorry, I had to ask. It always feels worse to me when it‘s a more marginal voice. She is one of the few people in the public sphere in the uk who has had a upbringing similar to my own. How shit is it when in the uk you actually rarely hear even a white working class voice that works in the media.? (edited) 5y
Weaponxgirl Thankyou for clarifying btw.really appreciated 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl I somewhat understand. I‘m from semi-rural Kentucky, and I‘m always disappointed when a voice I enjoyed from the South/rural areas comes out with something I find disrespectful/harmful (usually racist/Islamophobic😒). 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl oh and homophobic/transphobic. That‘s a popular thing for people to be around here, too. Even if they come across as inclusive at first glance. 😒 5y
Weaponxgirl @Megabooks I hear you! The working class has be co-opted here to only be pro brexit and any voice outside of how people think we should be is just ignored outright. It‘s not that I want a pack on the back for some of us being “better “I just want it to be acknowledged sometimes rather than media trying to further divisions between us all. 5y
Megabooks @Weaponxgirl Yes! The left wing media here sees the South as a bunch of yokels in blackface. It‘s very frustrating to have a stereotype forced on you. My mom was defriended by some people on Facebook because of my dad‘s Republican views. It was upsetting to her to be linked to him automatically when she doesn‘t agree. 😡 5y

Mack Little‘s inventive new release isn‘t in the database yet, but fans of horror & dark fantasy will love Zen Grant & her journey. “Unique” is an over-used term, but Little‘s language is creative & lush and she can spin an exciting story! #newrelease #darkfantasy #horror #talent #writerstowatch
