I really wanted to like this one. It lives in that odd limbo of not-quite-personal-enough to be a memoir and not in-depth enough to be a useful guide. I think it‘s probably aiming for the new graduate demographic — very surface-level advice and a lot of self-deprecating (and parent-deprecating) asides.

Just finished. Started off with a PROMISE: ❤️ New Orleans; volunteer work; a quirky, 16YO Latina Shakespeare-loving narrator, running from mysterious family drama... Meets a hot banjo player she calls “Miles” at Mid-Summer Mardi Gras. They spend an enchanted evening together...until a storm hits & everything goes to hell. I found solving the mystery of her backstory more interesting than the romance. Outcome was anticlimactic. #soso #YARomance

Honestly, I only liked the beginning and the ending. The middle part of the book felt very slow and I had a very hard time connecting with the characters. I do want to see where book two will take the plot.

Rating-3/5 Stars
The premise is good, however it fell very flat. The action was not intense and I guessed what was going to happen mid way. It was still enjoyable though.

Everless: Evermore | Sara Holland

Rating: 3/5 Stars
I LOVED the first book, Everless and have it 5 stars in 2018. Evermore was one of my anticipated reads of 2019 and did it live up to my expectations? Sadly, no it did not. There was little character growth in the story and was on the boring side. Jules is trying to remember her previous memories and we spend most of the time doing that. Then, the action scenes fell flat. I enjoyed bits and pieces.

I loved the concept of a mommy group and seeing the main characters go through the adjustment period of adding a baby into the family. However, when it came to the thriller part, it fell flat and the plot twist didn‘t wow me. But, I did love Colette, Francie, and Nell.

echalpan I agree. I gave this one a 3.5 at the time (and I was likely influenced by the Kerry Washington hype). Now that I reflect back on it, it was super underwhelming. 7mo
allthingskayla @echalpan After I finished I was thinking that the movie may be underwhelming. I hope they add more suspense for the movie. 7mo
JamieArc I agree too. This was one of my least favorite of the genre this past year. Pretty “meh” for me. 7mo

My last book of 2018! I literally finished this at 11:57 PM. 😬 Anyway, my rating is 3/5 stars. I loved how this was a female retelling of Beowulf. However, I felt like the characters were not developed and the pacing in some areas were slow. Also, the action scene in the end fell flat for me. There were redeeming scenes, but I think this book is so-so.

It was ok for a short summer read. The beginning and the plot are not bad. But it got really repetitive after 250 pages 🙄😏. The last few pages are ok again I think. Nothing special about writing style and language. Short sentences, investigation style.

Tangerine: A Novel | Christine Mangan

Pickpick

I wish Alfred Hitchcock was still alive so he could make this book into a movie. It starts slow and sultry just like Tangier and I could almost feel the heat come through the pages. Two college roommates reunite and the secrets and deception begin all through the back alleys of the city. Tangier is used to evoke darkness and mystery. By the second part, I could not put this book down.

Sorry #tangerinebuddyread but I had to finish.

mrozzz I‘m excited to get to the next part!! And no worries 😉 it‘d be great to still have you as part of the conversation of course! 1y
Mdargusch I plan to take part @mrozzz and you have great self control. I‘m surprised people on Litsy didn‘t like this book better. 🤔 1y

batsy Lovely review. It does sound very Hitchcock-esque and that's not a bad thing at all 😍 1y
Mdargusch I loved the pace of this book and didn‘t find it slow at all. I‘m not sure why it got so many #soso ratings @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @GripLitGrl @Bookcation74 @LeahBergen 1y

bedandabook I started this yesterday and am already at part 2. Absolutely loving the dark, atmospheric writing and tenseness of it. Can‘t stop reading now. 1y
