Bad with Money
Bad with Money: The Imperfect Art of Getting Your Financial Sh*t Together | Gaby Dunn
13 posts | 15 read | 13 to read
Humorous and forthright...[Gaby] Dunn makes facing money issues seem not only palatable but possibly even fun....Dunns book delivers. Publishers Weekly The beloved writer-comedian expands on her popular podcast with an engaging and empowering financial literacy book for Millennials and Gen Z. In the first episode of her Bad With Money podcast, Gaby Dunn asked patrons at a coffee shop two questions: First, whats your favorite sex position? Everyone was game to answer, even the barista. Then, she asked how much money was in their bank accounts. People were aghast. Thats a very personal question, they insisted. And therein lies the problem. Dunn argues that our inability to speak honestly about money is our #1 barrier to understanding it, leading us to feel alone, ashamed and anxious, which in turns makes us feel even more overwhelmed by it. In Bad With Money, she reveals the legitimate, systemic reasons behind our feeling of helplessness when it comes to personal finance, demystifying the many signposts on the road to getting our financial sh*t together, like how to choose an insurance plan or buy a car, sign up for a credit card or take out student loans. She speaks directly to her audience, offering advice on how to make that #freelancelyfe work for you, navigate money while you date, and budget without becoming a Nobel-winning economist overnight. Even a topic as notoriously dry as money becomes hilarious and engaging in the hands of Dunn, who weaves her own stories with the perspectives of various comedians, artists, students, and more, arguing thateven without selling our bodies to science or suffering the indignity of snobby thrift shop buyerswe can all start taking control of our financial futures.

I like Gaby‘s open commentary about money problems. There is definitely a stigma around struggling with finances. I‘m not sure how much “advice” I gained from this book, but I do have a few things to consider now, so it‘s a pick for me.

This was my #DoubleSpin for February.

I was going to go with 3.5 stars but I‘m thinking 4 because while this wasn‘t really about what to do with your money it was more about what not to do. Plus it was interesting to see someone else‘s perspective, especially with such a radical difference of thinking from my own.

Because my Pheonix Empress didn't arrive today, I'm contenting myself with reading a bunch of different nonfiction. Can you read multiple books at one time? I can with nonfiction, but not so much with fiction. I barely even like reading different series at the same time (which admittedly gets difficult with all the Martins and Rothfusses in the world.)

I really wanted to like this one. It lives in that odd limbo of not-quite-personal-enough to be a memoir and not in-depth enough to be a useful guide. I think it‘s probably aiming for the new graduate demographic — very surface-level advice and a lot of self-deprecating (and parent-deprecating) asides.

Great change of pace to find a finance book by someone who didn't get rich off of writing finance books. Dunn's finance guide / memoir is refreshingly candid about the realities of living in 21st century America, and provides practical advice and reassurance instead of the usual gospel of wealth platitudes.

Reviewsbylola I probably need to read this. 😂 The blurb cracks me up. I would probably be more offended by the money question than the sex question too. 😆 5y

Book 4 of #24in48

I love Gaby Dunn‘s podcast, Bad with Money. This book regurgitates most of the podcast‘s topics, but she goes deeper into her personal issues with money. Instead of an instructional guide, this is closer to a financial memoir with lessons learned in each chapter.

This would have been an awesome read in my late teens/early 20s - especially now that I‘m in my 30s and working to undo some of the exact mistakes Dunn discusses.

I loved this book! It‘s a great introduction to a lot of financial systems that feel unattainable and confusing to so many of us who grew up poor and/or without parental support. It‘s motivating and important to begin to understand the systemic issues in the financial world.
