The Hobbit | J.R.R. Tolkien

Secret shame: I've only read The Hobbit. I've had this collection since I was 13 and they're much older than that even, having once belonged to my dad. Maybe one day I'll get through Fellowship, but my god the singing 😑

Rachbb3 I read all 4 last year for the first time. Loved them! 6y
night_shift @Rachbb3 people seem to like them and as much as I wanna and enjoy the movies, I just can't ever seem to finish even the first one. 6y
Rachbb3 Maybe it's just not your thing. 6y

night_shift @Rachbb3 that's the thing.. high fantasy IS my thing. I plan on trying again this year, so we'll see! 6y
Rachbb3 Good luck! 6y
Bkwrm7 I have been halfway through The Two Towers for.....about 10 years now? So I feel you on this! At this point I feel like I would need to start the whole trilogy over to remember what's going on. Maybe someday, but there's so many other books out there.... 6y
night_shift @Bkwrm7 absolutely so many other books out there! Lol 6y
night_shift 10 years is about the amount of time I've been trying to read this, too 😞 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love that they belonged to your dad 💙💙💙💙 6y
night_shift @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks the man has his faults, but he never stopped me from reading. We had two chocked full cases of books in the house growing up. He got me into fantasy and horror. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @UnidragonFrag I think every parent does, unfortunately some more than others ... so glad to have also grown up with books!!! 6y
CatLass007 I recommend the audiobooks. The narrator is wonderful and he brings these books alive! Even the singing. 6y
elizabethlk I lovelovelove the Hobbit, but I read all three LOTR books as a kid, and just didn't enjoy them the same way (despite loving the movies). Planning on doing a re-read since it has been a long time, but they're really different from the Hobbit in some ways. 6y
Amabear Love! What a pretty set! 6y
night_shift @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yeah, true. Yup! And I've carried on the tradition! Though, a little more overboard lol 6y
night_shift @CatLass007 that's a great idea! I'll have to see if the library has the audiobooks.. @elizabethlk Odd.. I'm wondering if that's why I'm having so much trouble with it. Hm. They DO feel different though. 6y
night_shift @Amabear what the picture isn't showing so we'll is the clear tape holding the covers on of two of them. Shh.. lol but thanks! 😊 6y
Amabear @UnidragonFrag lol! Such character 😂 6y
vkois88 Great pic! I've honestly never read any of them. I attempted The Hobbit several times but couldn't get past the first page. It just didn't capture my attention. I wanted it to, but nope 😕 6y
emtobiasz Seconding the audiobooks-- listening to them on road trips was how my boyfriend and I finally finished Fellowship! Course, we never did finish books 2 and 3, so.... 6y
night_shift @vkois88 I feel you. I'm not sure i'd be able to re-read it now, even! @emtobiasz ok! Audiobooks it Is! That might be nice for road trips for us too! 6y

#latepost... 😔 But I had to show you the #oldestbookIown because it is obviously my prized possession (even if it was given to me by a terrible ex--you never get rid of book gifts). This is a stunning first edition of Peter and Wendy, J.M. Barrie's novel (based on his play Peter Pan). It's from 1911 and it's so good. #spookyoctober

Lcsmcat Beautiful! 7y
batsy It's so lovely! (and agreed, you never get rid of the book gifts 😆) 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @batsy I'm an archivist at heart, so I'm usually not one for getting rid of everything from an ex--I've compromised and said letters go in a big shoebox, useful gifts are just used because duh, and large gifts that make specific reference to the relationship (such as the big picture frame with cutouts etc) go in the trash. 😏 7y
LeahBergen That's gorgeous! 😍 7y

Years ago I found this beautiful trio of classics in a thrift store. Based on the inscription inside, these books date back to 1943.

LeahBergen So pretty! 7y

The #oldestbookiown is this one, San Francisco: A Pageant, that I found in a used book store, published in 1937. I grew up just north of SF, so the book had an added interest for me. The author was a SF native and had "vivid memories of both the Fire and the earthquake." It has a lot of history as well as contemporaneous descriptions of the city and beautiful drawings. #spookyoctober @Jess7

LeahBergen This looks lovely! 7y
AlaMich @LeahBergen it is! Makes me wish I had been able to see the city as it used to be. 7y

1887 book about Barbara Fritchie, the woman from Frederick who, legend has it, stood up against Stonewall Jackson (Confederate Army) and showed her support for the Union Army, during the American Civil War. This is probably the #oldestbookiown , though I also have volumes of Hawthorne's works (library discards), as well as a textbook belonging to my great great aunt...these are still at my parents' house. #spookyoctober

I have quite a few old books. I'm not sure if this is the oldest, but it is my partner's grandmother's childhood copy, which makes it near and dear to my heart. Plus, it's Alice, so of course I loved it immediately. 💕#oldestbookiown #SpookyOctober

I picked this beauty up in an antiques shop for just £3. No missing pages and great condition considering it was printed in 1908! It has lovely illustrations and old photos throughout. I absolutely love this book! 💛
