I think my favorite part of this book is the idea that kids have the opportunity to share something with the whole school every week. I'm not sure if boys still get picked on for dancing anymore. I hope not.

This wonderfully inspiring read aloud, RA-F, is about a little girl named Lena, her nervous shoes, and her Dad discussing the dilemma. You see it's her first day of school. The first day of school can be a very traumatic experience for children being away from their Mom or Dad, guardians, grandparents, for the first time.

Read aloud by Ms. Karamy reads from Crystal Lake Public Library.

PatriciaS UDL#3.1 Activate and supply background knowledge through discussions and questioning. #6.1 Guided goal-setting with nervous feelings like Lena did with her Dad. 3y
PatriciaS ESOL #29 Offer a variety of references in the form of materials, guided questions, discussion sessions, and written and/or oral assessments at the students' instructional level(s) for independent use. 3y
DrSpalding What a wonderful read aloud on the first day of school. When you say F I know you mean section however this would be realistic fiction I assume? Universal design principle 3.1 works perfectly as does 6.1. You were easily able to align Universal design and English learner strategies. 3y

This MF, award-winning (CCBC Choice, ALA/ALSC Notable Children‘s Book, Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor Book) work is perfect for those getting ready to go to their first day of school. Lena and her clothes are so excited, that is, except for her shoes. Her shoes were nervous and didn‘t want to try something new. That was until a friend (headband) reminded the shoes of all the times they were scared and decided to be brave.

TabathaA Best presented as a RA to address SEL, using UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, authenticity), and EL 3 (encourage self-talk – positive thinking). Spearsall Tabatha I love this!! I‘m definitely adding it to my stack because I am one that is all for SEL. I think this book is perfect with helping with first day jitters & there‘s no better way to help a student than a good book and SEL🥺💛 thank you for sharing your resources and relevant UDL and ESOL strategies as well! 3y

PatriciaS I love books that address challenges and issues our children face and reading about it allows children to realize they are not the only ones feeling this way. Great review 👍 thanks 3y
Vanvlieta Aw what a cute story! This would be a great RA for the first week of school. It would also be a great way to show students that everyone gets nervous, and its normal feel that way about something new(a nice book to incorporate SEL) 🙌🏼 thanks for sharing! 3y
DrSpalding You clearly wanted to find great books that you could use to support students emotionally and academically. The feelings and emotions guide is an excellent resource. Well done. 3y

Do you ever get to a point in a book and think “Oh no! I can see this is going to go badly” and simply want to not read it so you don‘t have to go through the trauma? Maybe it‘s just me. #joyousjanuary #nervous #mustkeepreading

Happy First Day of school for everyone going back! We‘re all virtual here and while it‘s a whole new experience, it‘s been just as exciting as any year. Looking forward to the scheduled reading time 😉

First Day Jitters is a light hearted RF book written for children and their feelings for the first day of school. Sarah Jane doesn‘t want to go to school because she is very nervous to start at a new school. The ending as a great twist! www.juliedanneberg.com is the authors website that has a list of ways to use this book in the classroom. This is a great icebreaker book to use on the first day of school with your students! #UCFLAE3414SP20

charlotteclancy You could use this book as a RA and then have your students write a short story that has a fun twist at the end to mirror this book. UDL 9.2- Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies. You could talk to your students about how to calm you first day jitters. EL 22- Give enough wait time for second language learners to respond during discussion. 4y

This book is the cutest! I won‘t give away the ending incase you haven‘t read it, but I plan on reading this RF book on the first day of school with my students. I have linked an abundance of fun activities for your students to get the “first day jitters” out! https://www.weareteachers.com/first-day-jitters-activities/ The EL strategy is #16 to integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. With the link, you can have them all.

juliap99 The UDL I chose is 9.2 , facilitate personal combing skills and strategies, because in the activities linked you can have the students make T-2-S connections about how they get nervous on the first day of school. You can also have them make “glitter jitter” which is glitter in a bottle to have them use if they need to calm down if they are nervous! #ucflae3414sp20 4y
Jennymmm Cute book 📚 ❤️ 4y
DrSpalding I am happy you enjoyed the read aloud. How fun to make a glitter jitter bottle! I am sure we could connect this to science instruction. Use this as a read aloud when you begin your school year. I will be reading Last Day Blues on our last day of class. 4y
