Agavitt1 UDL Principle 9.1 Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation: A book like this can really create motivation in students t achieve any dreams they have. ESOL Strategy 15. Pickpick

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is an MF and has won the New York Times Outstanding Book Award. It's a classic that I remember reading as a child, about a tree who gives everything she can to a boy who she loves very much, It's great for RA and a good source to use is https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/giving-tree which provides numerous activities to do after reading the book. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 UDL Principle 9.3 Develop self-assessment and reflection: This is a good book to be able to reflect on one's own self. ESOL Strategy 22. Give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions. This is a good book to promote higher thinking so be sure to give language learners enough time to think through the questions and comprehend them. 4y
deiacovab This book is so special I think to a lot of us. I really liked the resource you provided, there seems to be a ton of activities you can use while teaching this book 4y

Speranza's Sweater is an RF written by Marcy Pusey. It's a story of a mother telling her child why she has always kept an old plain-looking sweater. A social worker came and took the mother away from her biological parents when she was young, and she spends her life scared and confused just wanting a family who will love her. This book is also free on Kindle at the moment!#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is good for RA. Unfortunately, a lot of students will be able to relate to this type of booking, having it be a mirror for them. https://www.breakingthecycles.com/blog/2019/03/21/childrens-books-to-help-talk-a... This source provides a list of books that can help students open about and understand trauma they have or are going through. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships: Making it clear to students while reading and asking questions about the different relationships between the people in the story and about how the adoption process works. ESOL Strategy 47. Use information gap activities (sharing pieces of information to solve problems) 4y

Keishla.O This book sounds like such a good read! I definitely didn‘t expect such a deep story when I looked at the cover of the book. I think your resource is great to have on hand because teachers should always be prepared to help students in whatever way then can, like providing books that can help them with their personal lives. 4y
Rachelleleduc Wow! What an awesome book and resource! Books can help with trauma and can be awesome for a child to relate to and not feel like they are alone. Thank you for sharing! 4y
Brennap Oh wow this book sounds like a great story to talk about in school. It touches on the diverse hardships kids go through and I think it would be great to teach empathy and understanding. 4y
deiacovab This seems to be a really hard hitting book which unfortunately sometimes we do need. I like the resource you provided as well for this, it‘s not easy to talk about trauma. It‘s amazing that we can use children‘s books to facilitate those discussions 4y
ShardaeP This is informative on adoption. It can help students become sympathetic towards their peers. As well as, appreciative of what they have. 4y
DrSpalding Free Kindle books! Thank you for sharing! I agree that some students may be able to relate while others this could be a window for them! 4y

Brown Girl Dreaming | Jacqueline Woodson

Brown Girl Dreaming is an NF written by Jacqueline Woodson about her time growing up. It's the winner of the John Newbery Medal. It talks about her time growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s in New York and South Carolina. It includes 7 poems about the struggle she faces from racism and her becoming more aware of the Civil Rights movement. I really recommend checking this out, it's very touching.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This would be good for IR or RA. https://libwww.freelibrary.org/programs/onebook/obop18/docs/BrownGirlDreaming_Le... This source provides good discussion questions to get students thinking and creative assessments linked as well. UDL Principle 8.3 Foster collaboration and community: This is a good book to get students talking to one another about important issues. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 27. Highlight written materials for readability by enlarging the size print, by organizing chapters meaningfully, and by writing headings that show introductions or transition from one idea to another. I think this is important to highlight to students because it can be a little confusing and it may be easier for comprehension if broken down. 4y

The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog is an MF written by Mo Willems. Chris is obsessed with pigeons (he painted this beautiful picture of one) so I took the opportunity to read him this. It's about a pigeon who finds a hotdog and wants nothing more than to enjoy it. However, a curious little birdy keeps asking him questions because he's never tried one for himself. The pigeon doesn't want to give it to him so they decide to share it.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 RA and IR would work great for this book and also AS since Mo Willems has written numerous stories about this pigeon. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/pigeon-finds-hot-dog This source lists a lot of different activities to do with this book including word searches, crossword puzzles, and memory match games (with online versions as well as printable) which can be a lot of fun for younger students. (edited) 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 4.2 Optimize access to tools and assistive technologies: Offering online sources to students to participate in these activities is a great use of technology. ESOL Strategy 29. Offer a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level for independent use. Again, providing students with instructional resources can be very beneficial. 4y

Little Critter: Just Helping My Dad is an MF written by Mercer Mayer. It's a cute and simple story of a little critter just trying to help his dad, though he's not doing a good job, but to his dad, it's the thought that counts. I always loved the Little Critter books as a kid. This is a younger grade level book but I think it would be great to use for students who aren't strong readers to create confidence in them. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 I do think this would be good for IR, especially for students who are struggling to create confidence through a book that's easier to read. https://blog.readingeggs.com/2016/01/29/15-simple-ways-to-boost-your-childs-read... This source provides a lot of different strategies to build a child confidence in reading and I think it's an important source to check out. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting: Not every student is going to be on the same page and learn in the same exact way so it's important to help students set realistic goals for themselves. ESOL Strategy 26. Maintain a library of supplementary books and workbooks written in simple English, which offer additional illustrations for problems. It's important to provide these resources for students who need to utilize it. 4y
Ryan_R I‘m so excited that you shared this! I‘m doing a book from this series for my read aloud! 4y
DrSpalding Boosting children‘s reading confidence… What a fabulous resource to include. Independent reading with the little critter series is appropriate. This is a great series to include in your primary classroom library. 4y

Who Was Helen Keller? | Gare Thompson

Who Was Helen Keller? is a B written by Gare Thompson. It's the story of Helen Keller who lost her eyesight and hearing very early on in her life. She struggled for a few years along with her family, unable to communicate with them effectively. Then her teacher Anne Sullivan came along and taught her sign language and how to read. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good story for RA or IR. https://study.com/academy/lesson/helen-keller-lesson-plan.html This source provides a lesson after reading your own pick of a Helen Keller book, where students are then able to retell the key aspects in her life. UDL Principle 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information: This book is available in audio, ebook, and paperback which can be useful for students. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 50. For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as; strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role-playing activities, cloze strategy, etc. I think a KWL activity would be good for this lesson to see what students knew prior and what they learned from the book. 4y
Zelymarie.R I love the Who was serie! This book give the kids a great opportunity to learn about important people in a really fun way. 4y
Tabitha_H The “Who was” series are definitely great books to incorporate in the classroom. Your resource is also really great! 4y

Pete the Cat and the Supercool Science Fair is an SF written Kimberly and James Dean. It's about Pete and his classmates who are working on their science fair project as they become scientists. They make a volcano and face some struggles in it (like the color) but end up having an awesome project and win a prize. The book even came with stickers that he let me stick on his head after reading the book (he's a great sport.) #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good book for RA. https://www.sciencebuddies.org/teacher-resources This resource provides a lot of different lesson plans, hands activities, and STEM kits to use in the classroom, which would be good to use after reading the book to get students excited for experiments. UDL Principle 9.1 Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation: If students are encouraged to do something amazing they are more likely to do it. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 41. Have students compile notebooks of their hypothesis, materials, procedures, data, conclusions of experiments, and field experiences. Focusing on the aspects of the book that discuss these things to show students these are important steps in experiments. 4y
deiacovab I love that there are so many Pete the Cat books. Kids seem to love them and the fact that it‘s a massive series does wonders for pleasure reading in classrooms 4y

The Most Magnificent Thing is an SF written by Ashley Spires. It's a cute story about a girl who has this idea to make the most magnificent thing with her dog (and sidekick) but she faces a lot of difficulties getting it just right. She gets frustrated halfway through and gives up, but then gives it another shot. Rachel loved this book, specifically for the dog and the illustrations of him. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good book for RA and is a good way to encourage and talk about STEM in the classroom for students who want to be inventors like the little girl. http://www.nea.org/tools/lessons/73076.htm This resource provides a lot of different activities to do with this book, specifically the lessons that focus on the growth of mindset I think would be useful because in the story she was about to give up but gave it another chance and succeeded. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 8.2 Vary demands and resources to optimize challenge: Again, this book is about overcoming a struggle and not giving up, which is a great message for students. So making this clear to students that there will be challenges they face but to persevere is important. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 39. Have students prepare collections of science objects: This is a great book to use before a science fair or a project. It encourages thinking of what their “magnificent thing“ would be while also giving them the encouragement not to give up if it doesn't turn out right the first time. 4y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a P written by Shel Silverstein and has won numerous awards including the Outstanding Book Award. In article 7 it mentions the benefits of reading a poem a day and with 123 poems included, the book makes it simple to do so. I picked HUG O' WAR to read to my boyfriend and his roommate, they invested in nerf guns and have been shooting each other non-stop. The poems main message is not to fight but to love.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 I should mention I made them hug for the picture but they are still using the nerf guns.
I think CR is useful for this book, and with poetry in general because it teaches students the techniques to build their fluency and confidence. https://www.learningtogive.org/units/philanthropic-behavior/hug-o-war is a good resource because it involves not just reading the poem but an activity to brainstorm and problem-solve together.
4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 6.2 Support planning and strategy development: Not only is it important to develop a student's understanding of poetry, but it's important to make connections for a deeper understanding. For example, in the poem Hug O' War the message is to love instead of fight, but having students work together for collaboration and solving a problem presented to them creates even more development. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 19. Establish predictable classroom routines through the use of an outline on the board or bulletin board. Reading poetry every day to students creates a predictable classroom routine, and having an outline of what was read, or what is going to be read is useful to students. 4y
Brennap I love Shel Silverstein, he is so important. Great pick! 4y
DrSpalding Your images are so fun! That poem is one of my favorites. It should be read aloud or poetry readings offered in any elementary grade level. Choral reading works well with poetry. Good choice of a high-quality anthology and proper teaching strategy. 4y

Butterflies on the First Day of School by Annie Silvestro and illustrated by Dream Chen is an MF. It's about a girl who's starting kindergarten and even though she's excited, the closer it comes the more nervous she gets. Her mother tries to reassure her by telling her it's butterflies, which Rosie takes literally. Every time she talks or does activities with her classmates, butterflies come out of her mouth and she feels better.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is good for RA, especially useful on a student's first day of school. Similar to First Day Jitters, it shows students that it's common to be nervous on the first day, and there are ways to get over these nerves. https://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/first-day-school-books.html This source includes a lot of different activities to do with students for the first few days of school to get them comfortable. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 8.3 Foster collaboration and community: Having students work in groups doing this to create relationships with each other. ESOL strategy 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. Students working on these first-day activities will utilize all of these strategies. 4y

Goodnight Moon is an MF written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. It's a cute bedtime story from the perspective of a mother rabbit tucking the little rabbit into bed, saying goodnight to everything around them. I've always loved this book, it's simple but it is a really soothing book to read, in my opinion. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book is great for RA for younger students. http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/goodnight-moon This source discusses using background knowledge of what students do before they go to bed as well as bringing poetry into the mix (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Hey Diddle, Diddle.) UDL Principle 3.3 Guide information processing and visualization: Doing an RA for this book by walking students through with the words and illustrations. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 36. Ask numerous questions that require higher-level thinking responses. This can be done by asking students what they do before bed, or bringing their attention to certain illustrations and asking them questions of them. 4y

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is an HF and has won the John Newbery Medal as well as the Coretta Scott King Award for Authors. I read this book on Kindle and enjoyed it. It's a story of three young girls from New York going to visit their mother in California, whom they haven't seen or spoken to in years all while the Black Panther Movement is going on. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 I think this book is good for an IR and could also be used for RA, though I think I'd personally prefer it for IR. https://www.matchfishtank.org/curriculum/english-language-arts/5th-grade-literat... This source provides a lot of great ideas to use in the classroom for this book. It also provides informal sources like news articles during the Black Panther Movement, which students who read this may not be familiar with. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 3.1 Activate or supply background knowledge: Though some students may be familiar with this time era and what was occurring, a lot could not. Activate prior knowledge to those who are, and supplying background knowledge to those who are not. ESOL strategy 42. Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information: This is useful for historical type of books for students to better understand the timeline. 4y

Wonder | R.J. Palacio
post image
Pickpick

Wonder is an RF written by R.J. Palacio. It's the winner of Vermont's Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award along with a handful of others. It's about a child who has been homeschooled and is now starting at a real school. He was born with a facial difference and everyone is either afraid, makes fun of him, or avoids him altogether. I LOVED this book. I didn't want to put it down and ended up finishing it in 5 hours. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good book for IR but I also think it would be great to utilize it as an RA. I know I didn't want to put it down to find out what happened next, so I think leaving students on these “cliff hangers“ would keep them engaged. https://wonderthebook.com/for-teachers is a great source that provides a lot of lessons to do with the book, and also importantly, talks about ways to have a kind classroom. 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity: This book heavily focuses on being kind. It is common knowledge for most students to know that they should be kind, but oftentimes they can be ignorant (like some of the kids in the story) so this is a great way to show students how being mean makes other people feel, and more importantly how being kind can make someone so happy. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 27. Highlight written materials for readability by enlarging the size print, by organizing chapters meaningfully, and by writing headings that show introductions or transition from one idea to another. If this was done as an RA it's important to provide the resources for EL students to understand and comprehend the book. 4y
DrSpalding You can‘t get a better resource for this particular book! It would be a good independent read or read aloud. I agree that students would be engaged. Excellent job of expanding on your English learner and universal design principles. 4y

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs is a TL story written by Jon Scieszka. It's won the award of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book. It tells the tale of the 3 Little Pigs from the perspective of the wolf in a witty and humorous way. The wolf is basically telling his story from inside of the jail, and he was just trying to get sugar to make his grandmother a cake. I enjoyed the illustrations in this book, done by Lane Smith. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 I think this story would be good for an RA or S because I think the students (especially younger ones) would really find this spin on the tale quite funny. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/60680 This source provides a great lesson plan that involves both the original story as well as this fun spin. (edited) 4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information: The story shows a different perspective of a very well known story that always seems to paint the wolf in a bad light (granted he did eat the 2 pigs even in this story.) However, this shows students that not everything is black and white, and there is always two sides to every story. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 4. Link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. The Three Little Pigs is a well-known story that students will most likely know (if not reading the original before this would still be a good idea) and they can build off of this. 4y
Madison_swart I love this book! It‘s such an interesting take on the classic story of the three little pigs! 4y
DrSpalding This is an excellent book for point of you! Use this as a mentor text to teach children about how different points of view impact a story. The Day the Crayons Quit is MF by Drew Daywalt. Duncan comes home and sees his crayons wrote to him, each complaining about their treatment. The story ends with Duncan wanting them to be happy, so he colors a picture. Looking closely at it, he used the crayons just how they asked in the letters. After we read this in class, I told my boyfriend about how funny it was so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to read it to him. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is good for RA but I think it would be fun to use as RT as well, especially with higher grade levels so students can have a lot of fun with it, and engage in some sassy crayon behavior. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/day-crayons-quit is a resource with a lot of different activities to use for this book.
4y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships: The story shows relationships Duncan has with his crayons and them expressing their ideas. It provides a healthy but fun approach to students being able to have these conversations.
ESOL strategy 6. Continually monitor students‘ comprehension: All students should be able to enjoy a fun story. Speaking clearly and slow enough allowing time for comprehension.

Creepy Carrots is MF written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown and has earned a Caldecott Medal. The story follows a young rabbit named Jasper. The story ends with him trapping all the carrots in the field, which was their plan all along so he wouldn't eat them anymore! .#UCFLAE3414SP20

this resource for the book offers several different lesson plans and activities along with other information about the book.
The UDL principle 7.3 Minimize threats and distractions: To young readers this can look a little scary first glance, so it's important to make them feel safe.

Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 20. List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard. When coming across vocabulary students could potentially find challenging, writing them out along with a visual aid on the board for ESOL students can help them better understand the story. 4y

The Rainbow Fish | Marcus Pfister

Pickpick

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a classic MF and Christopher award winner. My child, Kevin (pictured above), absolutely loved it as you can tell from his smile. The story is about a beautiful fish and his beautiful scales. He learns that his appearance isn't everything and isn't true happiness. He ends up sharing his rainbow scales with all the other fish, and though he isn't the most beautiful anymore, he did find happiness. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book is great for RA. https://www.teacher.org/lesson-plan/rainbow-fish/ offers a good lesson plan, as well as fun craft to do with students after reading.

The UDL principle 5.2 Use multiple tools for construction and composition: In the lesson plan above, the Rainbow Fish video is used. Showing this to students even prior or after reading is using multiple tools for students to really comprehend the reading.

4y
Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 17. Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions. This can be reached by using the video above, and being very engaging while reading.

I vividly remember this cover from my childhood but I couldn't remember what the book was about, until reading the MF Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. It's about the letters of the alphabet climbing up a tree. I think this is a great read for when teaching students the alphabet. It would be fun while reading to have students join in what letter comes next! (The cover matched my pen!) #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book works best for RA, again, it's just a fun way to engage students when learning the alphabet. http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/chicka-chicka-boom-boom provides a week long lesson plan to go with the story, with a lot of fun activities in it.
The UDL principle 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information: It offers students another visual of the alphabet so they can see all the letters and while reading can recognize the letters named.

Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 4. Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. For example, using the lesson plan linked above, I would provide ESOL students with enough time to activate any prior knowledge they have about certain letters while pulling them out of the sand bucket. 4y
DrSpalding I am guessing you thoroughly enjoyed Ryan‘s storytelling of this book. It is perfect for storytelling and also reading aloud as you noted. This book can be used as a review of the letters of the alphabet. Great idea to pull them from a sand bucket. 4y

First Day Jitters | Julie Danneberg

Pickpick

First Day Jitters is RF by Julie Danneberg and illustrated by Judy Love is an adorable and funny story. It starts with Sarah being woken up for her first day of school and being nervous. The reader thinks she's a student but she is actually the teacher in the end. This story shows students teachers can be nervous on the first day and they're not alone. I read this to my roommates and they thought the ending was so funny and cute. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book is great for SR but also works great for RA. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/33093 this is a good website to find a use for this story for multiple lessons.

The UDL principle 9.2 Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies: It shows students adults can have the same feelings children do, which can help them cope with difficult situations, like the first day of school.

Agavitt1 An ESOL strategy 2: Promote cooperation (small groups.) Small groups can work together on the lesson and find similarities within themselves. 4y
Keishla.O I love this book. Everybody has first day jitters so it‘s important for students to know that they aren‘t alone. I will have to get this book for my classroom library. Thank you for sharing! 4y
DrSpalding This is a fantastic post. Quality resource and excellent alignment to universal design and English learner strategies. Great idea to share this with your roommates and include them in your photo! Love it. 4y
