Everyone knows that sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach just before diving into a new situation. Sarah Jane Hartwell is scared and doesn't want to start over at a new school. She doesn't know anybody, and nobody knows her. It will be awful. She just knows it. With much prodding from Mr. Hartwell, Sarah Jane reluctantly pulls herself together and goes to school. She is quickly befriended by Mrs. Burton, who helps smooth her jittery transition. This charming and familiar story will delight readers with its surprise ending. Fun, energetic illustrations brighten page after page with the busy antics surrounding Sarah Jane. FIRST DAY JITTERS is an enchanting story that is sure to be treasured by anyone who has ever anticipated a first day of school.

First Day Jitters is a light hearted RF book written for children and their feelings for the first day of school. Sarah Jane doesn‘t want to go to school because she is very nervous to start at a new school. The ending as a great twist! www.juliedanneberg.com is the authors website that has a list of ways to use this book in the classroom. This is a great icebreaker book to use on the first day of school with your students! #UCFLAE3414SP20

charlotteclancy You could use this book as a RA and then have your students write a short story that has a fun twist at the end to mirror this book. UDL 9.2- Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies. You could talk to your students about how to calm you first day jitters. EL 22- Give enough wait time for second language learners to respond during discussion. 4y

This book is the cutest! I won‘t give away the ending incase you haven‘t read it, but I plan on reading this RF book on the first day of school with my students. I have linked an abundance of fun activities for your students to get the “first day jitters” out! https://www.weareteachers.com/first-day-jitters-activities/ The EL strategy is #16 to integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. With the link, you can have them all.

juliap99 The UDL I chose is 9.2 , facilitate personal combing skills and strategies, because in the activities linked you can have the students make T-2-S connections about how they get nervous on the first day of school. You can also have them make “glitter jitter” which is glitter in a bottle to have them use if they need to calm down if they are nervous! #ucflae3414sp20 4y
Jennymmm Cute book 📚 ❤️ 4y
DrSpalding I am happy you enjoyed the read aloud. How fun to make a glitter jitter bottle! I am sure we could connect this to science instruction. Use this as a read aloud when you begin your school year. I will be reading Last Day Blues on our last day of class. 4y

First Day Jitters is RF by Julie Danneberg and illustrated by Judy Love is an adorable and funny story. It starts with Sarah being woken up for her first day of school and being nervous. The reader thinks she's a student but she is actually the teacher in the end. This story shows students teachers can be nervous on the first day and they're not alone. I read this to my roommates and they thought the ending was so funny and cute. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book is great for SR but also works great for RA. https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/33093 this is a good website to find a use for this story for multiple lessons.

The UDL principle 9.2 Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies: It shows students adults can have the same feelings children do, which can help them cope with difficult situations, like the first day of school.

Agavitt1 An ESOL strategy 2: Promote cooperation (small groups.) Small groups can work together on the lesson and find similarities within themselves. 4y
Keishla.O I love this book. Everybody has first day jitters so it‘s important for students to know that they aren‘t alone. I will have to get this book for my classroom library. Thank you for sharing! 4y
DrSpalding This is a fantastic post. Quality resource and excellent alignment to universal design and English learner strategies. Great idea to share this with your roommates and include them in your photo! Love it. 4y
carolinem Great picture! I definitely think it is important for students to work in small groups and work together to achieve a common goal! 4y

Erinehart #ucflae3414f19 First Day Jitters is an adorable RF children‘s PB written by Julie Danneberg. It's about a teacher who just doesn't want to go in for her first day of school. While reading this, you don't know it's referring to a teachers until the very last page. I think this book would be great for a RA on the first day of school for a class k-3 to calm the students nerves. (edited) 4y
Erinehart https://www.weareteachers.com/first-day-jitters-activities/ this website is a great resource for different activities relating to the first day of school that would go great with this book. 4y
Erinehart A UDL strategy that I found would be great for this text is 1.1 “Offer ways of customizing the display of information .“
A ESOL that would work with this text is #14 “Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant“. This is very important for RA, because without the students actually seeing the text it is important as the teacher that you are delivering it in a way they can understand.
(edited) 4y
DrSpalding I will read Last Day Blues on our last day. This certainly should be a read aloud on the first day of school. Great use of this high-quality resource. 4y

First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg is a Realistic Fiction picture book that relates to every kid out there with the anticipation of experiencing the first day of school. The twist ending is something even a teacher can love! This book would be perfect to read on the first day of each school year. This book is great for a RA! #ucflae3414f19

KevinKantola https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/33093 is a great resource for this book and offers a variety of options for activities. 5y
KevinKantola The UDL strategy I would use to teach this book is (7.2) optimize relevance, value, and authenticity within the material to help students relate to what you are reading. The ESOL strategy I would use is to promote cooperation and split the students up into small groups to discuss how they felt on the first day of school. 5y
DrSpalding I am glad you enjoyed this read aloud enough to post about it. Wise choice using the Florida Department of Education website for teachers. 4y

This is an amazing RF book for both students and teachers! First Day Jitters has such a funny twist at the end. This book can be used in the classroom as a RA on the first day of school. We also can use this book to demonstrate to students that we all have felt the way Sarah had felt on her first day which is perfectly fine! https://theappliciousteacher.com/first-week-activities-second-grade/ supports this teaching strategy with a many activities.

Myiab This book has one many awards including the Publishers Weekly Bestseller. UDL 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) and EL 13 (Use preview/review activities) #ucflae3414su19 (edited) 5y

First Day Jitters is a hilarious book that includes a twist at the end that is written by Julie Danneberg and illustrated by Judy Love. This book focuses on a certain someone that is nervous for their first day of school which is something we all experience. First Day Jitters has won some of awards one of which includes the PW Bestseller list. #UCFLAE3414F17

laurie_jayy https://www.pinterest.com/pin/409123947377331053/ links to a chart where students can choose how they‘re feeling. UDL 8.3 “Foster collaboration and community” goes along well with this lesson because we can discuss how students feel about the first day as a class and in small groups. EL 2. “Promote cooperation (small groups)” students can discuss with one another who they feel on their first day of school 6y
laurie_jayy This book would be great as a RA! 6y
