This was a fun read by the former editor-in-chief of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary. The book is structured as a year in reading, with a selection of topics that fit each season. It's a great book to pick up and put down, which is how I read it (although sometimes it was hard to resist “oh just one more set of words“).

A certain someone‘s voice is cacophonous to me. While in the literal sense of the word I might be wrong but the physical response I get when I accidentally hear it makes it seem so.

This was one that I came across and had to look up just for the pronunciation 🤔 A bit of a tongue twister!

dabbe Agreed! Try to say that one fast 10 times through! 😂 5mo

CBee Nice! I always heard it said “pablum” in reference to baby food - maybe sort of a rice cereal? My boys never liked it 😂 6mo
lil1inblue @CBee I guess Pablum was a brand name for baby cereal, and the name was based on this word! Kinda interesting! 6mo

Mellifluous is also a pleasant word to say! I love that the Latin translates almost literally to 'flows like honey' 🍯

Pronounced TUR-Shuh in Irish or TOOR-shuh in Scottish I think many of us are experiencing this in a deep way.

The antidote is to find joy, gratitude, etc.

My daughter sent me this link today and it was the perfect antidote. President Obama telling the story of one woman‘s voice energizing him, a room and a movement. Fire it up! Ready to go!

Deblovestoread Shout out to Edith Childs who was the woman who started it! 8mo
TheBookHippie My grandson 11 asked me what to yell so people would yell back - So he hollered at the top of his voice “ TELL ME WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE” in a crowd of 3000 plus people the 200 closest to us replied “THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE.” A lady who was 92 in a wheelchair later stopped us to say she now had hope, because it was a child‘s voice and adults answered him. Yes I cried. I was a puddle. 8mo

Entertaining and educating. If, like me, you've always wanted to know about the 'secret' language spoken in the emergency department of a hospital, or by cricket players, or among sound engineers, or... This book is for you.

Fun!
I did this in five word bursts, sometimes multiple a day, rather than one a day to keep up with library loans period, but it was still marvelously diverting rather than overwhelming. I can't say I'll remember every word I learned about but I always enjoy etymological entertainment. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality A few things I didn't expect:
UK (English and Scottish) words I've never heard of.
Some entries actually include multiple words under the heading of one, and some entries fully admit that the original origin can only be guessed at.
Diving into word history also meant getting many snippets of world history in the bargain). 2/?

Robotswithpersonality Getting an Englishwoman's expansion on the origin of American English words occasionally made familiar words feel foreign, odd experience, especially where the whole British Empire colonialism in history came into play. Mostly, entries acknowledged the injustices in darker moments of history.
The book's 2020 publication date meant multiple references to COVID and Trump. 3/3
