Your Shadow Half Remains | Sunny Moraine

Pickpick

A hauntingly claustrophobic read with an unreliable protagonist who has been living alone in a secluded area after a pandemic sweeps the nation, causing eye contact to drive people to into mindless homicidal rages. And then one day, Riley meets a man in the woods - a new neighbour - and things start to unravel or maybe the unraveling simply speeds up?

This was a short and snappy read because one just simply needed to know what was happening!!

I read this underhyped gem early last month & if you plan on participating in #novellanovember I def recommend this one, which clocks in at 176 pages & can be read in one sitting. A pandemic has swept the world: if people make eye contact with one another they become homicidal. Yes, def echoes of Bird Box but I honestly feel like Moraine (& I do love Malerman) pulls off this concept much better, as the reader is (CONT)

vivastory consistently wrongfooted in regards to the protagonist throughout the book. I loved this post-apocalyptic, stop staring at me! book & feel like it deserves more love. 2w

It seems almost cruel to tag this very hard-to-find book, but it has such a poignant little ghost in it.

This apocalyptic horror novella caught my eye on the library shelf & it was a good creepy quick read. (I finished it in about an hour-ish at Silent Book Club). An unreliable narrator makes it hard to tell what was “real” & what was in Riley‘s head & the tension & crazy ratcheted up with each page turn. A Bird Box vibe (at least the movie, I didn‘t read the book) & a good fast book if you are in the mood for somewhat graphic horror.

I found this horror novella by Sunny Moraine a brilliantly haunting story. I finished reading this many months ago, but the story and the skill of Moraine‘s writing still linger in my thoughts. Riley proves an incredibly unreliable narrator. Normally I‘m not a fan of unreliable narrators, but Moraine skillfully uses it in a way that works for me. (1/3)

BillBlume The concept of a world where simply looking into another person‘s eyes can cause a homicidal rage and then death, and the way society adapts to this, is so disturbing. Riley comes across unhinged and that worsens as they meet a new neighbor named Ellis whose arrival coincides with someone possibly stalking and cutting off Riley‘s connection to the outside world. (2/3) 4mo
BillBlume What‘s unclear is if Riley is doing it all to themselves or if Ellis is gaslighting them. It‘s such an unsettling book in the best way. (3/3) 4mo

BillBlume @Susanita for real!!! That and concept for the story sold me completely. Had the pleasure of meeting Sunny at a book event for this as Fountain Bookstore. They are so damn cool! 4mo

Currently reading. Bird Box vibes for sure. I picked it up from the cover alone, about 100 pages in. Not sure where it's going exactly.

I loved this book growing up, and it definitely encouraged my ongoing love affair with alleys 😂 I hadn't read this one in several years, and it was super fun to revisit. Cleery buys a box of magic at a flea market, and accidentally magics a stuffed crow into being alive - and able to talk - but not able to fly. With an enchantment of being able to find something magical in every new alley she visits that summer, she and her best friend set off ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to find a cure for Crow. This is just a cute, fun book with little adventures in every chapter. Thoroughly enjoyable.

MaGoose I never read this one when I was younger. I'll have to make up for that and track down a copy, either at the library or the bookstore. Sounds very interesting. 10mo

One of my most obscure old favorites, because it never made it into paperback. (The library journal reviews weren't great, which makes me long for magic so I could go back in time and smack some heads.) It includes a series of many different kinds of magical adventures -- mermaids, pixies, witches -- but the chapter featuring a lonely ghost girl is truly... haunting.
