•This line is just so reminiscent of one Jane Austen would have written. This was such a delightful and timely August read. A novel of a village play, a wryly observant donkey, a mishap with a bull, a dinner party created with absconded accompaniments, a moonlit stroll or two, and as always, one or two couples get engaged in the end. ❤️

Red wine and a new (old) book to start this evening.
This 1932 novel, about a debutante‘s search for a husband and her relationship with her loving (but aspiring) mother, is by the author of one of my favourite books.
The title comes from the Euripides quote: “Down on your knees, and thank heaven, fasting, for a good man‘s love”. 🙄

While it may not be as colourful as Frost In May or The View From The Harbour, if you look closely you can see little hidden details in the pattern. This is the 5th #ViragoModernClassics I‘ve added to my collection & is one of the most striking. With a foreword by Hilary Mantel, it should be a great read as well.👍
#BookMail Bk3 is a particularly pretty #ViragoModernClassics Edition of A View Of The Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor(am I the only one who thought it was the actress at first?) With a foreword by Sarah Waters, set in a small coastal village, it‘s a novel about secrets and lies. And did I mention how pretty it is?😍
#BookMail Bk2 is another #ViragoModernClassics, this time Memento Mori by Muriel Sparks. I‘m totally in love with these editions, the patterns on the covers, the French flaps plus the new forewords by other authors in the genre. Looks like I‘m gonna need a bigger library.
