Reading in the Rivers of London series universe is always a good time. What follows are primary observation from each short story.
The Home Crowd Advantage: cheeky among the pathos.
The Domestic: Little bit grim, little bit sad, wouldn't be an Rivers of London collection without it.
The Cockpit - haunted (? 😏) bookstore!
[Toby cameos!]
The Loneliness of Long-Distance Grannies: Respect your elders. ☺️ 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? A Rare Book of Cunning Devices: Library!!! Librarian with fantastic/mysterious history; unusual book! 😁
A Dedicated Follower of Fashion: Trippy
Favourite Uncle: More Abigail !
Vanessa Sommer's Other Christmas List: I'm hoping this is a character from one of the novellas I've yet to read, because I'm drawing a blank on any other appearances - pleasant diversion as a story.

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Three Rivers, Two Husbands and a Baby: One of my favourites of this collection, and particularly happy to see these characters once again, plus answering a curiousity about a new arrival 😉 [side note Leda and the swan reference 👀?]
The Moments that ended the collection just made me want more!
End note by author promised there will be/are more short stories, for now I will satisfy my craving with those novellas I haven't caught up on.

Flew back home and took a short break from ‘The Faithful and the Fallen‘ to read Jade City. Feels like the Godfather tune played on a Chinese harp. Enjoying it so far.

First book of May completed. Yay! 🎉

Now trying to decide if I should pick up the next one or finish something else I started in April. Hm, decisions, decisions. 🤔🤣

CaramelLunacy I really enjoyed this one! The next one was rapidly added to the TBR pile 13h
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @CaramelLunacy I did too. It felt very old school like Susan Cooper and Narnia. 11h

Another good installment in the October Daye series, but I did find one thing disappointing. I was excited that this book was set in Toronto (close to where I live) but almost all the action happened in the hidden faerie realm. The only Toronto references were the overused Tim Hortons jokes. We really do have more than Tim Hortons here in Canada! 😄

Librarybelle I‘ve heard of Tim Horton‘s but did not realize it‘s a Canadian company 2d

Hooked_on_books But Timbits are so good! Especially the chocolate ones. Yum! 2d
kwmg40 @Librarybelle They're not wholly Canadian these days, as there is some foreign ownership, but Tim's was founded in the 1960's by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton, and there's pretty much a Tim's in every Canadian city and town, no matter how small. 2d
Librarybelle Good to know! I think I‘ve seen one near Erie, Pennsylvania but have not visited. 2d
kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books My family had to try the Timbiebs (a collaboration with Justin Bieber) when they came out, but my favourites remain the chocolate glazed and old fashioned. 2d
TheAromaofBooks Yes, we have Tim Horton's here in Ohio... TimBits are the best!! 2d
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Nice to see appreciation of Tim's elsewhere in the world! My daughter lives in London where a Tim's opened up recently. She said there were long lineups, which seemed weird to us, as Tim's is just the local no-frills coffee shop to us Canadians. 😄 2d

Glad for the author's acknowledgements, it confirms that this is a duology, that the bit of pacing that felt rushed to me is likely the result of the transformation from a planned trilogy, and needing to wrap up a lot of loose ends in a shorter time frame. All of which did not take away from my enjoyment of the tale. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Fantastic world-building expanding on an original premise, without losing the focus on the characters we've grown to love, though which get the spotlight this time around has switched. NYC + Manny's, and Padmini's arcs came to satisfying conclusions. I would still be happy to read more in this world in the future, but I don't feel like there's any missing pieces to any characters' stories. 3d
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 Given when this duology was being written, Jemisin's fading energy for it makes complete sense. I'll hope for better times on the horizon for many American cities IRL, and be grateful for this bright light in the dark in the meantime. P.S. Happy to report audiobook production for this duology is superlative for both books. 3d

3.4⭐️ don‘t give me wrong with, this book wasn‘t bad, it just wasn‘t the best when I read this month. Though Grownup is still the absolute worst for the year!

The good news is, in amongst the duds and the meh, there were some real treasures read in April.

The second InCryptid book was just as fun as the first. McGuire populates her urban fantasy with memorable, entertaining characters—take Istas who walks around asking “if there will be carnage,” for example—and sets them in a world where dragons, talking mice (who happen to really like cake), & other such creatures hide & thrive amongst humans…until the Covenant of St. George shows up to purge them. Humorous with a good dash of danger & mayhem.

Let's play review catchup!

It took me long enough to get into this one that I considered DNFing despite the spectacular title, but the beginning was, in fact, somewhat boring. But the story picks up once Brian realizes his new werewolf life coach is no good. At that point it got a lot more interesting and really turned around for me. Basically a college student turned werewolf working as a batista gets suckered into a self help pyramid scheme.
