Eight-year-old Max moves with his family to an old farmhouse in Yorkshire. While exploring the attic he discovers a set of toy soldiers ... toy soldiers that used to belong to the four Bronte children and have now come to life.

Regeneration | Pat Barker

So far I've only read the first book of Barker's Regeneration trilogy, but I loved it. Siegfried Sassoon, poet & war hero, is sent to a hospital to be mentally evaluated & "rehabilitated" after he declares his fellow soldiers have become #ToySoldiers

Cinfhen Sounds really fascinating ~ took screenshot for hubs! 6y
vivastory @Cinfhen I hope he likes it! 6y
BarbaraBB I read them all and they are so good. And sad... 6y
Moray_Reads I think the other two are even better than the first 6y

Czar Peter III loved playing with #toysoldiers. In fact, in Catherine‘s memoirs she writes that her nutjob husband basically only wanted to play with them (in bed) and not her. Once, a rat bit the head off of one of his beloved toy soldiers Peter had lined up, so the man-child Czar gave the rat a court martial and hanged it for treason on a teeny tiny gallows. #heatofjuly

Cinfhen You‘re the BEST history teacher EVER 🙌🏻❤️😄 6y
Hollie @Cinfhen thanks!! 😘 my students always like that story 😀 6y
wanderinglynn Wow! Never heard that story. History class would‘ve been way more interesting if I‘d had you as a teacher! 😂👍🏻 6y
BarbaraBB What a cool story! Thanks! 6y
Hollie Thank you @wanderinglynn I try to keep it interesting in class! 6y

Toy Soldiers | William P. Kennedy

I haven‘t thought about this book in ages. I read it (and watched the movie) years ago, mainly because I loved Sean Astin back then. I also loved the Martika song, but that‘s not important now. 😆 #toysoldiers #heatofjuly

sparingqueen I was obsessed with this movie, I‘ve watched it dozens of times. I still have my VHS copy! 6y
IamIamIam I had no idea this was a book!!!!! And that Martika song is one of the worst earworms EVER!!! 🐛🎶 6y
ElleSkel I completely forgot about this... and the Martika song!!! 6y

Purrfectpages @sparingqueen 😆 👍 @IamIamIam I think I only knew of the book bc of the film. Unrelated, I loved the song! @Elle_Skeldon I loved Martika back then! 😝 6y
ElleSkel I did too! Listened to the ‘tape‘ (LOL) on repeat. Meaning I had to rewind it over and over again. That is until it broke! 6y
Purrfectpages @Elle_Skeldon ah, the days of VHS! Lol 6y
Cinfhen This plot sounds vaguely familiar 😜 6y
CoffeeK8 Oh man, I loved this movie. I didn‘t realize there was a book 6y
huntersmom1977 Awww. Thanks for the nostalgia 6y
Purrfectpages @Cinfhen I don‘t even remember much it! @CoffeeK8 that‘s funny! @huntersmom1977 you‘re welcome 😝 6y

The Soldier Son trilogy is my least fav Hobb, there are some good points in the story but it doesn‘t hold up against her other trilogies IMO.

Kalalalatja I can‘t really figure out if I should read this or not 🤷‍♀️ 6y
TrishB @Kalalalatja I think when you have no more Hobb you can probably read. It‘s not bad but it‘s just not up to her exceptionally high standards- again IMO!! 6y
JulAnna What is the best Hobb in your opinion? 6y
See All 10 Comments
TrishB @JulAnna start with Farseer Trilogy, The Tawny Man trilogy, and then Fitz and the Fool trilogy 👍🏻 the best ones for me! (edited) 6y
Jovy Heard so many good things about Hobb I think I will start Farseer this year! 6y
JulAnna Thanks for the advice! 😊 6y
TrishB @Jovy enjoy 👍🏻 6y
TrishB @JulAnna hope you like them 👍🏻 6y
Melissa_J I haven‘t started this one since most Hobb fans seem to dislike it. 6y
TrishB @Melissa_J you get the occasional Hobb insight, but definitely not a series I‘d recommend. You‘re not really missing anything. 6y

Have not read this, sounds harrowing.
A story of a young boy forced to become a killer, a child soldier during the Sierra Leone's civil war. ‘This is how wars are fought now by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice.‘

#HeatofJuly #toysoldiers

Cathythoughts Desperately sad to see this 💔 6y
BarbaraBB Such a harsh reality 6y
Cinfhen This book has been on my TBR for ages. So sad 😢😢 I read a similar story which was harrowing but inspirational 6y

Wife I listened to the audiobook years ago and am still haunted. It is one of the best audiobooks I‘ve ever listened to. 🌹 6y
Cortg This book os sitting on my bookshelf. I need to read it! 6y
Billypar I read it a few months ago- incredibly sad, but the author did an amazing job chronicling such a disturbing period of his life. 6y

#heatofJuly Eminem pays respect to his fallen comrades in the song #ToySoldiers equating East Coast/West Coast War has nothing more than record labels looking for publicity and using rappers as pawns.

BarbaraBB Eminem‘s lyrics are always the best! 6y
Cinfhen True @BarbaraBB he‘s a genius 6y
julesG @BarbaraBB - true! Iike his songs. Even got a lot of my students interested, once their level of English was up to par. 6y

Cinfhen That‘s a great way to engage students @julesG 👍🏻😁🎵 6y
julesG @Cinfhen I used to start new classes with 'My Name Is' - - - most of the students were probably surprised I listened to this music. You know, not exactly being part of the target group etc. 6y
Smartypants @Cinfhen @julesG fellow hip hop lover here, I used to say the west has good beats and the east has great lyrics until #2pac hit the scene. When I moved to the south in my late teenage years, southern rap intrigued me because #outkast and #getoboys didn‘t fit in with the east vs west battle. 6y
Cinfhen Love #2pac 💔and #OutKast really changed the rap / hip~hop scene @Smartypants (edited) 6y
emilyhaldi If you're into the hip hop scene, especially early 90's west coast rap (and even if you're not so much) The Defiant Ones is an intriguing documentary on Netflix!!! Jimmy Iovene is a genius 🎚🎛🎙🎤 ps. @Smartypants I went to school in New Orleans and LOVE southern rap!! 💜💛💚 6y
Cinfhen My son watched that Netflix doc & told me I NEEDED to see it. I‘m gonna add it to my list. Thanks @emilyhaldi for the reminder 6y
Smartypants @emilyhaldi then you must be ‘Bout it, ‘Bout it! Gosh, that takes me back to my college years. Lol 6y
mrp27 @emilyhaldi Ohh that sounds good, I'm going to have to watch. Not a super huge hip hop/rap fan today but I grew up in the late 80's early 90's in the shadows of LA and gangster rap. Was a fan back in the day. 6y
