Reading this article about predicting the Pulitzer for Fiction and so proud of myself for having read 2 of the 6 mentioned as favorites of the guy who wrote the article. AND! I‘ve read 8 of the 10 listed as predictions. (And I have at least heard of the other two…)
LOL - the winner OF COURSE didn‘t get a mention, but was on a long list for Natl Book Award: Night Watch by Jayne Anne Phillips 👏
Link will be dropped into comments.

BkClubCare Also, have never heard of Jayne Anne Phillips; will give her books a try. 📚 21h
BarbaraBB I had never heard of her either 🙈 15h

Pickpick

This was a fun book if you're a fan of the show. Porter worked for “New Top Gear“ as the script editor during all the seasons that Clarkson, May, and Hammond were the presenters. The book is roughly linear but divided into very short chapters that each kind of read like their own little essay, so at times it felt a little abrupt, but also meant that it was easy to delve in and out of. As you'd expect, the writing is a bit snarky and entertaining⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Porter presents his coworkers, including the three famous presenters, with a fairly even hand, and the book feels genuinely informative/entertaining and not like its trying to cash in on scandalous memoirs, even when he discusses the abrupt ending of the show (in that incarnation). I'm not British, so some of the references went over my head (TV shows “everyone“ watched or people more famous there than here), but overall this was ⬇ 1d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) readable and enjoyable - if you like the show, you'll probably find this engaging as well.

This was my #BookSpin for April 🎉

InkedBookworm13 This is awesome. I just ordered it for my husband. We used to watch the original Top Gear all the time. 😍 19h
TheAromaofBooks @lil1inblue @InkedBookworm13 - My biggest issue with the book was that Porter seems to assume that I already know who some people are (i.e. famous racecar drivers, actors, British politicians) so some of his stories kind of went over my head. But overall there is a lot of fun stuff here and an interesting perspective. 9h
Jari-chan Oh, we had so much fun with Top Gear 😁 8h
Roary47 I‘ll have to get this for my husband to not read, and then read it for him. 😅 7h

peaKnit Is this the one with the monkey like creature on the wing?! My mom had a hilarious memory of this episode scaring her brother, makes me laugh to think of her! 3d
dabbe @peaKnit Yes it is! William Shatner plays the crazy guy on the plane who sees the fuzzy gremlin but no one else does. The students loved it! 😂 3d

We are having beautiful weather today. I got off to a rocky start with this book, HW complains a lot - about his parents, his struggles, his life but he is always kind to those around him. His battles with dyslexia, I think he‘s 34 when he realizes that is what his problem is and its genetic ( his daughter and step son have it too) is a turning point and so is getting a therapist ( much later than that). His wife narrates too ❤️ which is smart

Can we do #TuesdayTunes on a Thursday night?? This just came up on a Spotify-curated playlist, and I could smell that school bus seat vinyl and that particular teenage muskiness. Man…took me straight back to high school. Hadn‘t heard the song in years!

BarbaraBB Of course we can! I didn‘t know this The Verve song but am listening to it while typing this. I love it when a song brings back such memories! 4w
BarbaraBB Still listening and what a good album! I only knew them from their biggest hit here, Bitter Sweet Symphony, which I didn‘t like much. 4w

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! This was an album I bought back then for their single, but I like the rest of the album much more now than BSS; although the orchestral background is still great. I associate that song with the final scene in Cruel Intentions, which was my college roommate‘s favorite movie so I saw it A LOT! Many good memories with her! 😁😁 4w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m definitely a nostalgia listener, but I‘m picking up some great new songs too lately. 4w
Megabooks @vivastory the lyrics definitely hit harder as an adult than they did as a teen. 4w
BarbaraBB I‘d love to know what you‘re picking up these days and hope you‘ll continue #ThursdayTunes 😜🥰 (edited) 4w
TieDyeDude This song is new to me, but I like it! Similar orchestral arrangement to BSS. Is that throughout the album? 4w
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude Yes, it is. I'd recommend Richard Ashcroft's solo albums to you, especially Alone With Everybody and Human Conditions. Song for the Lovers from the former has a great orchestral introduction 😊 https://open.spotify.com/track/7a90gal9tr3yS8bEXUvu8D?si=-O-28vPQSKOgNjSPsyRh4A&... (edited) 4w
Megabooks @Bookwomble thanks for chiming in! And recommending another artist I‘ll check out! I hope you try the album @TieDyeDude 👍🏻 3w
Bookwomble @Megabooks You're welcome. Richard Ashcroft is the lead singer and main songwriter for The Verve, so if you like them, you'll like him 😊 3w
Megabooks @Bookwomble I am SO BAD at knowing the names of band members! 😂😂 even bands I‘ve enjoyed for years I‘d have trouble naming them. 3w

Bag #2 of Snow White and started Being Henry. It‘s kind of a clash following The Postcard. Henry‘s parents are German Jews who escaped Berlin before the war really kicked off, his father misled his mom that they were just going on a work trip ( worked in the lumber trade) and then stayed in New York. Their entire family left behind perished. He is almost disparaging about the faux family they create to replace the lost one.

TheBookHippie I love Snow White. Henry doing the Hava Nagilla gives me life. ♥️ 4w
mcctrish @TheBookHippie right now I‘m not sure how I am feeling about HW ( and a friend warned me) he dislikes his parents so much, his tone is very accusatory about so many things compared to how I feel he is so beloved by me and everyone I know. It‘s early days, not everyone likes their parents and having a learning disability ( dyslexia) back in the day was brutally misunderstood 4w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I‘ve heard that too . I get the not liking your parents. It is hard for ppl who like theirs. My dear friend, decade older than me, with dyslexia had a horrific childhood. She‘s 67. I‘ve almost picked this book up a few times. I‘ll be anxious to see what you think in the end. 4w
