Bookwormjillk Jan is always being told she needs permission from the ladies in her life. Danny says she needs to ask to go into Rebecca‘s room. Bea says she must tell her the minute she‘s pregnant. Blah. 1d
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Agree. But if she were to assert herself, they would back down. She‘s always assuming and never asserting. 1d
Roary47 My heart broke a little for Jan here. How tough to be meeting an influential matriarch in your husband‘s family. Then be told “what did you do to Rebecca, I liked Rebecca, where is Rebecca?” 💔 (edited) 20h
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 I‘m amazed at how many people are willing to say more or less the same thing to her! 19h
TheAromaofBooks We are caretaking my grandma right now and I really related with a lot of Jan's thoughts in this chapter, about how strange it is when someone gets old, and wondering what they were really like when they were young and vibrant. 19h
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Those passages really resonated with me as well. 18h
julieclair I had a sick feeling in my stomach from the moment the grandmother seemed delighted that Jan had come to visit. I was worried she was thinking Jan was Rebecca. 💔 And poor Jan, she did nothing wrong, but her very presence caused the frail old lady major distress. 18h
TheAromaofBooks Can't believe I forgot to mention my favorite line - “I had an uneasy feeling we might be asked to spend the approaching Christmas with Beatrice. Perhaps I could have influenza.“ 😂 7h

Librarybelle I forgot how creepy this chapter was. Yikes! 2d
See All 20 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle me too! It‘s been a few years since I read it, I kept gasping out loud 🤣 2d
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead I know! It‘s been several years for me, and I kept thinking “how could I have forgotten this!!”😂 2d
Bookwormjillk This was really creepy. Run Jan, run! 2d
peanutnine Sooo creepy. Also, I highly doubt Danvers was as buddy buddy with Rebecca as she's making it out, like they were best friends 2d
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine I agree, it seems like rebecca was more likely to tease her 2d
TheBookHippie Creeeeeeepy. 2d
Ruthiella @Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead I also forgot just how creepy this chapter was. 2d
Librarybelle @Ruthiella It makes me wonder what else I have forgotten as the story unfolds. 2d
willaful We're definitely in gothic territory now! 2d
ElizaMarie @peanutnine @BarkingMadRead Yes ☑️ it feels like Danvers has to be exaggerating their closeness. Also. Like I get it, you cared about her, but to keep touching her things and putting flowers in her room… feels so weird to me. 2d
julieclair @willaful Yes! This chapter has all the gothic novel vibes. And I‘m loving it! 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig So creepy. 2d
Clare-Dragonfly CREEPY, DANNY!!! 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I am even more sure now it was Danvers in the cottage threatening Ben. She‘s creeping around being obsessed with everything Rebecca ever touched. (edited) 2d
Roary47 It‘s almost as if Danvers loved her just as much if not more than Max. 2d
dabbe @Roary47 OBSESSION to the nth degree. 😮 2d
BarkingMadRead @Roary47 @dabbe yes! Obsession for sure. Should be interesting! 1d

Ruthiella He‘s definitely a shady character. 😬 3d

Bookwormjillk Danny 🤣🤣🤣 3d
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I just can‘t 🤣 I can‘t imagine her with any nickname at all ☠️ 3d
dabbe At least there's a little respite for our narrator who feels more like herself with Maxim away. She doesn't have to pretend to be someone she isn't and can just be herself--for a little while. 3d
ElizaMarie So much mystery in this chapter!!!! I'm super intrigued! 3d
Clare-Dragonfly I think it was Mrs. Danvers in the cabin threatening Ben!!! Rebecca would have no reason to keep her cabin activities a secret, and would probably think Ben is beneath her. Mrs. Danvers fits the description better and is definitely acting fishy. 3d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhh that‘s a really good theory and I could totally see Danvers doing that! 3d
Bookwormjillk Jan is really reminding me of a person at work who decides that each time she has a scheduled check in with our shared supervisor she‘s going to get fired then when I tell her she‘s not she gets mad when she‘s not promoted. The stories she tells herself in her head. Cool it Jan. Max isn‘t dead just because he went to London. #DontBelieveEverythingYouThink 3d
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - Seriously! I was reading that section like COOL YOUR JETS, my word! 2d
kwmg40 Jan really has an overactive imagination! 2d
julieclair @kwmg40 Yes, and that imagination is not doing her any favors. 2d

quietjenn @5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk so say we all 5d
ElizaMarie I‘m so sad for her! To feel the way she does (inadequate). I wish she was able to talk to her HUSBAND about these things, but #AtLeastSheHasFrank. He is such a sweet man :) Also, yes “modest” has a billion different meanings. #WhatDoYouMean 3d
dabbe I'm glad she has Frank, too, but ouch to his last line: “I suppose she was the most beautiful creature I ever saw in my life.“

Yet ... he calls Rebecca a “creature.“ I looked up the definition and found two interesting thoughts re: Miss-holier-than-thou Rebecca:
1. an animal, as distinct from a human being
2. a fictional being, typically a FRIGHTENING one.

Perhaps Rebecca ain't all she's cracked up to be. 🧐
3d
julieclair @dabbe The word “creature” jumped out at me, too! Such an interesting word choice. What could it mean? 🤔 2d
dabbe @julieclair Makes us want to keep reading on, right? 🤩🤩🤩 2d
julieclair @dabbe Absolutely! Du Maurier is such a gifted writer. 2d

IndoorDame For someone who was promised to be super forthcoming with her opinions I found Beatrice pretty cryptic. I think “not Rebecca” is a positive grade from the new SIL, but I definitely wouldn‘t be sure if I were in Jan‘s (super unfashionable) shoes 1w
Bookwormjillk Frustrating chapter (but in a good way.) Tell us what you know Beatrice! 1w
julieclair I like Beatrice and hope that she and Jan will become friends. And maybe Beatrice will also answer all of our (uh, I mean Jan‘s) questions! 🤞 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Jan is such a child. I'm surprised she didn't hide under her bed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7d
Clare-Dragonfly I like Beatrice! But I sure wish Jan would have asked her more questions. 7d
Graciouswarriorprincess @Crinoline_Laphroaig lol! I agree but I like Beatrice. 7d
willaful LOL at the pic! 7d
ElizaMarie Beatrice holds all the answers! 6d

Bookwormjillk She needs a hobby and a spine 1w
See All 17 Comments
peanutnine It's crazy how everyone just acts like she should know her way around the house and all the routines. I guess they assumed Max told her ahead of time? She definitely needs the courage to speak up and ask questions 1w
Ruthiella I think the staff were possibly also expecting another Rebecca - who would tell them “I don‘t want a fire in the morning room, light it in the library”. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig This is where I start to really dislike Max. He just dumps her in the house, doesn't bother to even show her around, and he knows Evil Mrs D is manipulative. Also he acts like he's so busy running Manderley but he's been gone for WEEKS. And it not like today when you can keep in touch by email and smart phones. I'm quite sure Manager of the estate doesn't need his help. 1w
ElizaMarie I had to look up the plant (ha!) I thought I knew what it was, but I wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, I can't tell if Mrs. D wants her to be more arrogant like the old Mrs or um.. what? It sounds like Jan is way more easygoing and could be easier to “serve“ under but instead, they keep bullying her. And shame on Max, he knows Mrs. D is difficult but.. yet doesn't even show her the after-breakfast room!? 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I just want to yell at Jan to stop daydreaming. Which makes it sound like I don't like this book but I really do. 1w
julieclair Jan needs a spine for sure. She‘s letting the servants walk all over her. But she also needs to ask more questions, so she can learn how things work at Manderley. Everyone already knows she‘s clueless, so why not ask? I wonder if we‘ll ever find out what‘s up with Mrs. D and/or exactly what happened to Rebecca? (edited) 1w
dabbe So glad you posted this pic! What about those bloody rhododendrons on the pathway to Manderley? Jan HATES them. They're too full of life, too large, too in-your-face, too ... like Rebecca? Wonder if there's some symbolism there? 😂 1w
Roary47 I‘m with many of you in your upset with Max. He could have waited at least a day to show her around. Jan also might just be trying to be nice on top of her not asking questions and speaking up. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I felt the same way. Like when she pretended like she already knew the way to the morning room. She hasn't even been there 24 hours! Why would it be embarrassing to ask where that is?? I always feel bad for the narrator when I read this book, but also spend about half the time just wanting to shake her and tell her to stop assuming the worst about everything! 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I thought it was weird that all the servants refer to Rebecca as Mrs. de Winter as though Jan isn‘t Mrs. de Winter now… but then Mrs. Danvers did call her that, so I don‘t know what to think! Would the servants like them to be completely interchangeable? 1w
Aimeesue @dabbe Symbolism?? What symbolism?? I must have missed it. 😂 I‘m def on Team NO Rhododenrons though. They too extra for me. 1w
dabbe @Aimeesue New hashtag: #teamnorhodo 😂 1w

IndoorDame I would‘ve been disappointed not to get the ocean room! And I don‘t think she‘s nearly upset enough about Mrs. Danvers. Bad bad vibes. Also, I don‘t care how naive Jan is, she should know she needs new clothes before pulling up at Manderly. 1w
See All 17 Comments
Ruthiella From day one, Mrs Danvers has Jan‘s number and she knows how to manipulate and undermine her. Maxim is the only person who has really any power over her and he‘s clueless. 1w
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame 💯 and how could Max not realize that?!? I was waiting for him to give her Rebecca‘s clothes or something crazy like that! 1w
Bookwormjillk Jan needs to grow a pair and ask for the ocean view and some clothes. 1w
ElizaMarie I want the big room that overlooks the ocean! But maybe Maxium always secretly wished his x wanted to have the rose room? So hard to tell because he is mostly mute! (Having such a hard time only reading one chapter a day) 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I am the odd one out, I‘d want the room with the roses! Surely you can always go hang out by the ocean whenever you want. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I always thought Max saying he liked the room with Rose View was actually covering up that he didn't think he new wife would want to sleep in the dead wife's room. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @IndoorDame absolutely on the clothes. She's been in Monte for weeks she should know that. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjillk And Max should have insisted on buying her a new wardrobe on the honeymoon. Or is he so insecure that he wants her dumpy and afraid? 1w
Bookwormjillk @Crinoline_Laphroaig I don‘t know if he even thinks about her that much 1w
Roary47 @Bookwormjillk well he did buy her the brushes. He seems to be clueless on other stuff though. I‘m surprised Jan didn‘t get frostbite in this chapter. So many cold shoulders. Eeesh. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig I thought HE doesn‘t want to sleep in his dead wife‘s room. 1w
5feet.of.fury @Clare-Dragonfly @Crinoline_Laphroaig whoever‘s benefit it is for, I‘m with you, it seems less creepy to have a new room with the new wife… ocean view or not…. 1w
dabbe Maybe he likes her as a naive waif in frumpy clothes--he told her he never wanted her to wear that pearl necklace or act like she's 36. Kinda creepy when you think about it, too. 1w

Graywacke I just love this picture. (Sorry, carry on with the brothers and their ideas) 1w
mcctrish I want to read the book that goes with this picture 1w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish such a good short story and an amazing movie adaptation! 1w
CatLass007 @mcctrish It‘s in a book of short stories by Stephen King. The movie is The Shawshank Redemption. 1w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish #itdoesnttakemuch but Stephen King is…. Well…. king 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
BarkingMadRead Oh and for those who may not know, the story is called Rita Hayworth and the book is called 1w
mcctrish True 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1w
Ruthiella Apparently Fyodor planned for this to be a three book series. Would he have actually allowed Dmitry to escape? Considering that Dostoyevsky himself was sentenced to Siberia, I wonder… You know- write what you know… 1w

currentlyreadinginCO I think that I liked the last chapter best, everyone waiting around for the verdict unexpected by most. Although, weren't we told early on that Alyosha is the hero of this story 🤔, perhaps I misunderstood and he meant like .... the good one ... 2w
