This was my last book of 2023 and my last book for #booked2022! A rollicking story about the Amazons filled with history (well researched), travel, intrigue and of course, strong, intelligent women! I bought this book years ago because I could not resist a heroine named Diana. A fast paced, fun read. Thanks to the challenge,it is now checked off my #TBR list! #nonpatriarchalsociety #ReadingAfrica2022

Cinfhen Happy New Year!!! Congrats on completing #Booked2022 🥳🎉💜 1y

1600s remote Norway where inhabitants rely on the sea. The men of the village are shipwrecked and the women are left to carry on without husbands, brothers, fathers. They are doing fine until an outsider comes to their shores and begins accusing women of witchcraft. I liked the story but I listened to the audiobook which matched the tone of the book, but a bit flat.
completes my 1st #booked reading challenge! #booked2023 #nonpatriarchalsociety

Chelsea.Poole @Cinfhen @alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage -- thanks for hosting! Looking forward to next year :) 1y

4.75 ⭐

Not sure if it was me (tired easily atm), or the book but for some parts I kept drifting off. However, I did learn about H D, Jane Harrison & Eileen Power so still a pick.

Do you think I could use it for #nonpatriarchalsociety #pop22 #booked2022? Some of the women did get married but the emphasis is very much 'A Room of One's Own'. @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain @Kalalalatja @Cortg @Laughterhp @Megabooks @KarenUK

Cinfhen Yes!!! I think that‘s a clever choice 🤓 2y

This is an alternate history version of classic westerns. I was drawn to it because I've always been interested in the Old West. The story felt a little uneven and I would have liked a more in-depth portrait of the "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang". I'm using this for #Booked2022 #NonPatriarchalSociety @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen Agreed, fun but not fully developed 2y

A soft pick for me. I find it amazing that this book was written over 100 years ago but, while some ideas are revolutionary, other themes are troubling; very much of their time.

I found it a little dry in places and the sudden ending was a let down but I‘m still glad I read it, hence the soft pick.

BarbaraBB I loved another by her 2y
Cinfhen I knew the author sounded familiar @BarbaraBB !!! Nice pick, Helen 😁 2y
squirrelbrain I have to say @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen - The Yellow Wallpaper was a lot better than this one. 2y

alisiakae I read this years ago in a Women's Lit class, and also felt she was quite ahead of her time in certain areas. 2y
jenniferw88 Have you done the #booked2022 prompt about a #nonpatriarchalsociety? This would work for that too! I'm doubling up my read for #pop22 and #booked2022 2y
squirrelbrain I already did that prompt @jenniferw88 🤦‍♀️ - I went down the eco-feminist route instead so I can‘t double-dip it! 2y
squirrelbrain Some parts could have been written now couldn‘t they? @4thhouseontheleft I also thought it was interesting she chose to write from a male POV. 2y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain ok, just thought I'd mention it if you hadn't! 😘 2y
KarenUK So glad you are in the #pop22 club! I didn‘t realize! I‘ll be tagging you too 😘 (edited) 2y
squirrelbrain I wasn‘t @KarenUK - trying not to do too many challenges this year. But then I realised I‘d read quite a lot of the prompts….so here I am! 2y

The Gate to Women's Country | Sheri S. Tepper

Pickpick

This book was published in the 80s, and is clearly dated: 100% focused on heterosexual men and women and Tepper has literally erased other people from her post-apocalyptic world, but when I got past that, I actually loved it.

In a post-nuclear world a few hundred years in the future, some very interesting societal structures have arisen. I can‘t say much without spoiling, but this is a well-written, thought-provoking feminist novel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain This was my #nonpatriarchalsociety bill for #Booked2022. I went down a Google rabbit hole looking for Tepper‘s personal views of some of the issues I had problems with about this book, and I am not sure I would have agreed with her on most things, but this has been an experience. 2y
AmandaBlaze I read Grass and The Family Tree a long time ago. I remember liking them then. 2y
sprainedbrain @AmandaBlaze I‘m definitely going to read more by her! 2y

This was wonderful. Learning of the customs from a woman's perspective of a #Nigerian village was very enlightening. Efuru may not have been a queen, but because she was clever and kind, she was respected. She knew how to make money and she cared for everyone in her village. Pancake day photo.
Connie is a 37yr old Mexican living in NY, having been in a mental hosp after hitting + then losing her daughter, she attacks her niece's pimp trying to save her,+ends up back in the asylum. We time travel with her to a society in the 22nd century where she discovers abt birth, death, + life in the future. An amazing vision written in 1978.

Cinfhen Pancake looks seriously delicious 😋 book sounds like a heavy read. 2y
Cathythoughts Nice pancake! Mine were a disaster this year 😬 it‘s a fun day though 👍 2y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts thanks Cathy. Many years of practice although still dare not toss the thing. 2y
andrew61 @Cinfhen yes it was a struggle at times unlike the pancakes. 2y
alisiakae That pancake looks SO good! Book sounds great, too. 😄 2y

Raven Grimassi is one of my favorite authors on witchcraft. In this book he writes about the old Italian tradition of Stregheria and about Aradia (considered the Goddess of Witches) who brought witchcraft back to the people in the 14th century.
