Meh. Various teamups, a few quips, various villains I don't know very well or am not very interested in.
Jimmy Olsen as Elastic Man and Batgirl, as well as Green Arrow and Green Lantern were team ups with fun potential, but neither story was long enough.
Here's hoping next installment in this series is as good as previous ones!

Pickpick

Years after the heroes of the Justice League retire, a new generation of powered people quarrel and fight each other, making life for civilians dangerous. This book is the antithesis of the film MAN OF STEEL. It answers the question ‘Why do we need Superman?‘ We need him to be the role model for the concept of ‘superhero‘. Otherwise, we live amongst fascist Gods ruling over us mortal peons. His most valuable power is always doing what‘s right.

Despite a terrible premise (a powerful, evil Demi-god birthed from the mind of GL Kyle Rayner from a childhood comic he wrote, threatens Earth), this book is still enjoyable. A big cast of characters, fun sci-fi exploits, and space battles make this tale worthwhile, even if the villain is as generic and stupid as they come. The second story arc is better (A schizophrenic gets hold of a yellow ring of Fear power, causing chaos).

14 Batman stories set in 14 countries by creative teams from those countries: neat idea, ok execution.
With about 15 pages per story, there's not much space for development, even bearing in mind most readers will have some immersion in the Bat-milieu, so minimal set up is needed.
A quick, easy read with some good bits, but it's like those pizzas that show piled toppings on the packaging, but there's hardly any cheese and only one olive inside 🍕🫤

SamAnne Love the analogy for this anthology! 😀 (edited) 4w

Bookwomble @AnnCrystal Yes, it's a great cover, and much of the artwork is excellent 🦇 4w
AnnCrystal @Bookwomble at least the artwork was excellent, that almost always makes up for the lack of a storyline 😉👍🏼📚💫. 4w
TieDyeDude @AnnCrystal Lee Bermejo is one of my favorite comic artists! He does amazing work with Batman especially. 4w

"Home? Come on, Batman. I'm not needed there.
A mad clown has already taken a dump on the desk of the Oval Office, and people still love him."

? Why, Mr. Joker, to whom could you possibly be referring? ???

The title ‘YEAR ONE‘ carries a lot of baggage. It must be a bare-bones reimagining of a hero‘s origin story, told with gritty realism. It must be serious and mature. This feels like a trap, a recipe for a maudlin, no fun tale. But in the hands of this creative team, it is a success. The familiar story is rendered in a tense and pulpy fashion, making every moment feel highly consequential. Recommended!

TieDyeDude Diggle was the name of one of the main characters on the TV show Arrow. I wonder if this comic was one of their inspirations... (edited) 1mo
