Nelly Dean - Unreliable Narrator - Yes or No?
#Pemberlittens #Chapter31
#WanderingThroughWutheringHeights

BarkingMadRead Hmmmm I think she is unreliable, she definitely sees things through rose colored glasses. Although, one could argue that Cathy is the way she is now, because of how she was treated once she left Nelly‘s care…. 2y

ravenlee I feel like a lot of Nelly‘s tale involves disclaimers like, “through no real fault of my own,” despite the fact that she frequently leaves Cathy free to run around wherever she likes which lets her get into trouble at the Heights. 2y
Bookwormjillk I agree with @ravenlee that she tells the story with an eye toward holding herself blameless. Although if I were her I would have been out of there years ago so can‘t say I really blame her for doing what she has to do. 2y
batsy I think definitely unreliable, because it's wholly her perspective and we know that's subjective. It's impossible for any person to be objective. And it's clear she had certain beliefs and views that coloured her impression. Also a disturbing tendency to think that Cathy was better off dead, Linton better off dead 😳 2y
DivineDiana I had a very difficult time understanding how she continued to show fondness and sympathy for Heathcliff. Was she just trying to present a Saintly image of herself? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Librarybelle She‘s definitely unreliable. They‘re all unreliable!! 😂 2y
nanuska_153 I definitely don't fully trust her version of the story. I'm with @ravenlee too many disclaimers, and I find it very difficult to believe how sometimes she could have been acting in good faith... I think she probably helped Heathcliff on purpose, specially when Catherine (mother) was alive, and now she regrets it and pretends it was all a chain of accidents or that she was forced to act that way. 2y
Ruthiella Totally unreliable! 2y
suvata Can‘t believe a word she says 2y
rubyslippersreads I‘ve just started this book, and it seems the author has the same impression about 2y
ElizaMarie @rubyslippersreads ooo that book sounds interesting! I think ... Nelly is unreliable but I don't feel like this is a malicious thing. More like... people who want to tell a “good“ story and have an audience. 2y

#pemberlittens #chapteraday #chapter31 If you‘re as stubborn and snarky as Elizabeth Bennet, raise you‘re hand 🙋🏼‍♀️. The tension is PALPABLE, you guys. The dialogue throughout this entire chapter is perfection.
