This memoir takes you on a journey with the author through the American West as he tries to reconcile difficult life transitions with finding God in unexpected places. While honest, funny, and even poetic at times, this one fell a little flat for me. Some of the narrative felt disjointed and came across as a little too Wild at Heart for my taste. #29by29

I think this book is great for people who want a straight forward approach to learning about the enneagram. I especially liked that there is a whole chapter that correlates how the MBTI cognitive functions and types relate to the 9 types here.

xicanti I'm also not sure what enneagrams are, but I'm on the very cusp of the millennial spectrum so maybe that explains it. 6y

I guess my circle of friends is just more enneagram savvy? 😜It‘s basically a way to categorize 9 basic personalities and their motivations/fears. @EllieDottie I‘m not quite done yet, but I think I am leaning towards 4w5 . Fascinating stuff. I really like how straight forward this book is. 6y

Caterina @LaLecture @xicanti @MatchlessMarie I'm 23 and I only know about the enneagram because my dad (53) is super into it. I've never met anyone my own age who knows what it is! I think Myers-Briggs is still the dominant personality test culturally, although I think the enneagram is better! (Side note: I'm a 1w2) 6y

MatchlessMarie @Caterina That‘s so interesting! Could be more of a thing among my social justice/activist/theological misfit friends. I got plenty of those. 😜

LaLecture @Caterina Yep, I know Myers-Briggs, although I keep forgetting which type I am :D. But as a psychology student I‘ve grown deeply suspicious of tests anyway :D. They basically thought us at uni to question every testing concept. I‘ve got a personality psychology course at university at the moment and I‘m curious if we‘re gonna talk about these tests too ^^. 6y

Caterina @LaLecture Oh, certainly be deeply suspicious! Personality tests should be used with a lot of caution. My personality unit in psych had an entire section about how they're all unscientific nonsense, focusing on Myers-Briggs and calling it as bad as Facebook quizzes to find out what Disney princess you are. 😂 6y

LaLecture @Caterina That‘s funny :D. My industrial and organisational psychology prof said something similar about tests designed to tell you which job you‘re suitable for. He said the results were as useful as knowing that you have the same personality as Princess Leia 😂😂. 6y

MatchlessMarie @LaLecture @Caterina Yeah I never did the tests. Took me forever to figure out my MBTI because I just read up on the cognitive functions and did it that way. That‘s why I would rather get a book on enneagram than a test. It‘s actually a pretty neat tool to help you understand why you are how u are 😅 6y

LaLecture @MatchlessMarie I also imagine a book to be more informative than a test. It helps you to understand things and doesn‘t just tell you “That‘s how it is, deal with it!”. 6y
