So I was not into Sanditon at first although I read the unfinished chapters many moons ago & have had the PBS series DVR‘d to watch. I believe it was trying to read it, The Other Bennet Sister & North and South at the same time for #Pemberlittens Well, I sped through TOBS & set aside N&S (I‘m going to jump back in) & then found it quite delightful. Witty & fun & a WHOLE LOT of seaweed, the author did Jane Austen a solid in finishing her book ⬇️

DebinHawaii …keeping the flavor of the original writing but maybe even doing it a bit better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I 💜 the last few chapters the most. Now on to the miniseries… (edited) 2y
sprainedbrain @DebinHawaii great review! I also loved the wacky last few chapters. Having just binged the show yesterday/last night, let me warn you that it is most definitely NOT this version. 😂 2y
DebinHawaii @sprainedbrain I have heard that & am duly warned! 😂 I am currently finishing the last two Bridgerton Season 2 episodes & I‘m going to try it next. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wish Jane Austen was able to finish this story! She set up such interesting characters and a very different setting compared to her other novels. I wish we knew what she intended for Charlotte and Sidney and Edward and Clara. But the “another lady”, Dobbs, told a very Austenesque story and I very much enjoyed it! I started the show on PBS Masterpiece and I really liked the first episode! #pemberlittens

Caught up through Chapter 21 (I had to read Monday‘s chapter today because it certainly won‘t happen tomorrow.)

Chapter 20 was my favorite as there are lots of exclamations over seaweed, seaweed art & shells & shell art & bee stings & home cures on the field trip to Brinshore. Since unlike Charlotte, I find the “charms of seaweed” very moving, this picture made me giggle… 😉😆

sprainedbrain I giggled through all of that seaweed business! 2y

Jane Austen set it all up in the first chapters, but didn‘t live to finish Sanditon. I enjoyed the Austen chapters, but I honestly loved the rest of this version, completed by ‘Another Lady‘ (Marie Dobbs) in 1975, so much that it gets to live here on my Jane shelf.❤️

Dobbs made a gallant, fairly successful attempt to emulate Austen‘s writing style, and as she explained in her ‘apology‘ note at the end, she also tried to finish the story in a ⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain plausibly Austenesque manner. It‘s maybe a little more dramatic and mysterious in parts than I would have expected from Austen, but I laughed a lot and got the desired dumb-smile-inducing happy ending I was hoping for. Obviously, I wish Austen could have finished it herself (and written many more books), but this was a fun, satisfying book anyway. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2y
sprainedbrain I‘m planning to listen to the audio of the completion by Kate Riordan soon—I suspect it‘s very different from this one—since I believe that‘s the version that was adapted into the show… and then I‘m really looking forward to watching the show. 😉

Apologies for being a terrible chapter-a-day #buddyread leader, #Pemberlittens! I just really couldn‘t keep stopping when it got so good. ❤️

StayCurious Great review! I‘m sorry I didn‘t keep up with my daily posts for this one! 2y
Christyco125 I‘m so glad I wasn‘t the only one to rush through to the end. Sir Edward, what a cad! Loved this though. 2y
SarahBookInterrupted Love this review and a happy ending! I will definitely read this one. 2y
julieclair Great review! I have been trying to decide which version to read. I'll go with this one! 🙂 2y
mollyrotondo Oh so the tv show is based another author‘s completion of the story? I was going to hold off until I finished Dobb‘s version but if the show is different anyway then maybe I‘ll start the show this weekend 😆 It keeps popping up on my Amazon fire stick so I‘m antsy to start watching lol 2y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo yes I know the tv show one is based off a version finished by Kate Riordan. No clue how similar they are. I‘m also anxious to get to the show… Theo James. 😍 2y
alisiakae I meant to join in for Sandition, oops! 2y

Ch 16: Charlotte successfully manages to merge her group with Sidney and his friend (turns out jilted Henry is also a brooding romantic dish). Much to Edward‘s chagrin, the expanded party walks to see his cottage together, with Henry monopolizing Clara the whole time. Sidney out-literary references Edward, then perfectly dissects his character to an astonished Charlotte while Edward isn‘t looking, then steals both ladies away home.

Clare-Dragonfly Based on Edward‘s literary references earlier, to things that don‘t exist, it would be easy to beat him 😂 2y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly yep, he‘s continuing to suck at that, and turns out Sidney actually knows some. 😂 2y
Christyco125 I‘m not sure about Sidney. After dinner and the walk, he seems a bit gossipy. 2y

Ch 15: On the way to sea bathe, Charlotte & Clara see a coach arriving; Charlotte is sure it‘s Sidney‘s friends. Clara continues to be a mystery, but Charlotte wants to be friends. The ladies enjoy their supervised wading (only 15 minutes, no splashing/jumping!), but then Sir E shows up insisting they walk with him. Charlotte refuses, until she spots Sidney & friend coming, then suddenly agrees, develops an imaginary shoe pebble.😂

Christyco125 Sir E and Clara are such connivers. 2y
sprainedbrain @Christyco125 I can‘t wait to see what they are up to. 2y
mollyrotondo I loved the fake pebble in the shoe bit 😂 2y

Ch 14: after dinner, Sidney parks himself next to Charlotte, apparently thrilled to be able to talk about something besides digestion with his family. He‘s very engaging, knowledgeable, and opinionated, even if Charlotte can‘t quite figure him out. He talks all kinds of smack (in fun) about his siblings and is amused that Charlotte the houseguest doesn‘t join in. He wants lots of entertainment when Henry arrives, including balls!

TheBookHippie 😂😅 we have family that discusses digestion at every meal they eat as far as we can tell 🤣🤣🤣😆 I never knew others did 😂😂😂 2y
sprainedbrain @TheBookHippie Your family would fit right in with the Parkers. 😂 2y
mollyrotondo I‘m not sure if I like Sydney. The men aren‘t super appealing in this one 😆 2y

Ch 13 (still written by Not Jane): Sidney has promised Mr. P that he will round up the sickly siblings and bring them for family dinner. Mrs. P has her doubts, since Susan has yet to even come up the hill, but sure enough, Sidney gets them all there, and clearly has a positive effect, as they are a lively, happy bunch. Sidney talks about his two friends coming soon, including Poor Henry Brudenall, who has been jilted by his cousin.

sprainedbrain I know it‘s early, but so far I really like this author‘s writing… it‘s definitely not Jane, but it feels like it‘s staying true to the feel of the first part of the novel. Also, super excited to be able to Google lots of pictures of Theo James from here on. 😍 2y

Ch 12 (entirely written by ‘another lady‘) picks up with Charlotte in awe of how easily Clara and Sir Edward are lying to Lady D. Clara suggests sea bathing, Lady D has nothing nice to say about bathing machines (seriously, I have to agree) or sea bathing in general, but Charlotte is keen to go until she starts to suspect Clara/Sir Edward are going to use her to be away from Lady D. Mrs. Parker has much to say about awesome Sidney.

sprainedbrain I‘ve googled and researched a little about bathing machines over the years as I‘ve seen them mentioned in several books, but I seriously do not get why this was a thing… and for so long. 😂 2y
TheBookHippie 🤣 I don‘t get it either .. 2y
rubyslippersreads Wasn‘t their purpose to give ladies a place to change into their bathing costumes? 2y
See All 9 Comments
sprainedbrain @rubyslippersreads yes, but they were also used by men (in this book it‘s 6 pence cheaper for men lol) and also the ‘machines‘ were rolled in to the water. I get having little huts for changing, but I‘m still so lost on these machines. 😅 2y
rubyslippersreads @sprainedbrain I have a feeling that was to limit the shocking sight of people‘s limbs. 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks So I know they carted you out into the water in them, but then did the bather emerge from the shed to swim around, or did you literally just sit there while the water came in?? 2y
sprainedbrain @TheAromaofBooks yet another aspect of the bathing machine I have yet to grasp! Maybe when I watch Sanditon they will show me. 🤞🏻 2y
ravenlee Got to keep those scandalous ankles hidden! There‘s an interesting picture book about Victoria and her machine. 2y
mollyrotondo @ravenlee I kind of want that picture book 😂 2y
